  4. "Justice" on Facebook-Deprived Man Sues For $500K · · Score: 1

    From TFA:

He claims he has a higher purpose than the money in going after the social network.

"I'm not doing this for money. I'm doing this for justice. I believe there should be some, somewhere," he told The New York Post.

If he actually won this, I wonder what he'd do with the $500k. Unless he donates its entirety to a good cause (charity, good of the community), he's doing this for the money.

But the bigger question is, what exactly did he do that Facebook saw as a violation? For all we know he could have been posting inappropriate photos or harassing people...

I don't mean to spark a fan argument (as I'm not that much of a Star Wars fan) but by being appalled by Hayden Christianson's appearance, I mean that because I think he's a poor actor, and certainly no replacement for the late and far more talented Sebastian Shaw. The superimposition struck me as being disrespectful to Shaw, even as limited as his role was.

Secondly, I don't buy into the "died at a young age" idea. Vader's change for the better at the end of RoJ (saving Luke, killing the Emperor) was supposed to be symbolic of the idea that Anakin resurfaced again, and was never truly dead. This was how he was redeemed before death. At least it struck me that way in the original release, especially after his line, "there's no hope for me now, son."

Lucas just wanted to add more cohesion between the two trilogies. It's as simple as that.

The terms "hacking" and "hacker" have been carelessly misused for a very long time. When something as blatantly simple as manipulating a file in a package is considered to be an act of hacking, it makes me twitch, too. Kind of like the way that all the script kiddies in the world are referred to and feared as "hackers."

The hate because beta is suppose to mean the software is still being tested, it's not ready for release to the general public, you're not suppose to run around and recommend everyone in the world download it and use it.

Isn't that exactly what this body browser is? A piece of software that's still in beta? Part of the "Google Labs" family of experimental software? Hence the 'Beta' at the top of the page?

You won't see Google touting this as a practical application (like Chrome or Earth) to the general public quite a while. Part of the reason it's publicly accessible now is to demonstrate WebGL, which in itself is not ready for production use. The only reason we're seeing this demonstration here is because new, up-and-coming technologies make for popular ./ headlines. When WebGL matures, gets standardized and becomes commonplace, we'll start to see web developers pushing out things like these for production.

Aside from Gmail I haven't seen any other webapps toting the "beta" buzzword for ridiculously long periods of time. But on the other hand, it's refreshing to finally see developers who take web application development seriously enough that they're not just kludging together some PHP, releasing it as v1 and then playing bugfixes by ear.

  19. Bad Idea on iPhone Alarm Bug Leads To Mass European Sleep-in · · Score: 1

In general I think it's a bad idea to rely on cellphones as alarm clocks. I don't know if this is true for all of them but at least for the phones I've had, the clock stays synced with the nearest tower and if there is no service within range, there is no clock. So if there's no service, there's no alarm, and that makes the phone completely useless during travel in unpopulated areas. I've also missed alarms because a technical difficulty of some sort disabled a nearby phone tower.

So now, I use a regular battery-backed alarm clock at home and I use a simple portable alarm clock for travel. Reliable and unbreakable.
