I agree that without a wrapper, writing Windows code is awful. However, that does not mean that you have to depend upon.Net. Bad argument. wxWidgets or GTK+ seem like quite good portability choices, as well.
The advantage of.Net is in its vast library of utility functions (compression, database connections, etc -- or so I have heard). Mono is used for this precise reason, and for advantages of using C#'s memory cleanup and similar things. If you write for Mono and only then backport to Windows, it's pretty certain you won't havep roblems.
Personally, I'm _AVOIDING_.Net in large circles; portability is what I want to achieve, and that's (I hope) what's going be appreciated "when the day of awakening comes".
Personally, I read Slashdot only through Google Desktop's news feed. And I also read the other electronic newspapers the same way. I agree that Google violates copyright; I don't really feel good when I know that my every thought I ever posted on the net with this nickname is indexed for posterity. For the same reason I don't feel good about Wayback Machine. Google should be made to bring in an opt-in service; the opt-out service still wastes bandwidth on those little robots.txt files.
<wife> hey there, sorry to bug ya, i'll be quick

An elementary school experiment clearly shows that if you submerge a nail that it won't oxidize/rust. If you keep it near water, it will rust. If you keep it out of water it won't rust.
Like this:
.X--X .I..I .I..I .I&&I =I&&I====== .I&&I WA .I..I TE .I..I R .X--X
where & marks rust. Note, most rust was near the water level. So, submerging would not harm the disk... as long as we speak about the casing. Who knows what'd happen if the water reached the insides;)
I also think that you may have forgotten that those people were even more starving before Mao Ze Dong. He at least gave them one meal a day, while before that they didn't even have that.
ECMAScript IS Javascript. It's the standard around which Javascript is based... It was made later than Javascript, but is still a basis for Javascript. Think of ECMAScript as the engine for Javascript;)

I believe that my data, with SSL, will be encrypted en-route to the destination. What the destination does with my data is of course decryption and reading in plain format.
Storing is unfortunately the real problem, and I agree to that.

20 years is too long nowadays. It would pay them on an extra level of scale, at least. It's a good thing Brazil did this.

Seems fine by me... strlen("Google") * strlen("Belgium") = 42
