If you're lifting, what you want to do is to weaken your muscles enough for them to rebuild stronger. So again, starting with a weaker muscle just means that it's easier to get to the point you want.
Also, as has already been mentioned, the main point is that it decreases the chance of injury.
In short, keep stretching!
