There are a lot of solar powered plants that do not use photovoltaic technology, which is what the poster was basing his whole "budget" on. Instead, they use reflective surfaces to produce heat, which usually produces steam to drive a generator. This is much more economical, because the materials involved aren't so damn expensive as PVs. Maybe google should build one of those instead, but then again it's not the type of thing you can slap on a roof. I think the most common type is the parabolic trough. Also, plants that do make use of photovoltaics typically have tracking devices on them, so that they follow the sun, producing like 25% more than if they just stay still.
The guys on the list do both, they design, and they implement. Every one of the respondents have created something from the ground up, doing both the architecting and the programming. Design patterns is one of those books I see on a lot of developers shelves, and in a lot of CS courses.
Me neither. My father is a lefty and he got fed up and ended up ordering a special version of his circular saw for left-handed people, I think this was a Porter-Cable. It was amusing to see the identical saw side by side, mirrored. I picked one up in each hand, noting that this might be an excellent setup for slaying zombies.
I think it is interesting. No forum or newsgroup really gets the kind of global attention that youtube gets. Add to that the fact that producing a fake video is so much more involved than just typing up a few paragraphs. These companies actually have to plan it all out, get someone to shoot the video, do the sound, script, etc. Posting on a forum could just be the act of a single individual, this is somehow creepier, and more conspiratorial. Furthermore, I think people tend to trust more what they see than what they read.
...when you can just make an illegal copy of your friend's badge!

Bentley's Programming Pearls is mentioned both by James Gosling and Tim Bray. For my part, I was surprised nobody mentioned the design patterns book.
