The US makes a living infringing on other's sovereignty. I think it's about time we get a taste of our own medicine (and yes, I am a US citizen.) It's ridiculous that we get to tell everyone else what is best for them, but no one does it to us.

  2. Re:Serious question... Serious answer! on Help To Map Light Pollution · · Score: 1

... and I'm not trying to troll or anything, but is there anything humans do that isn't considered some form of pollution?

While that's a true statement, there is no reason to avoid making an attempt to reduce our impact on the planet while we're here.

I believe we're already screwed, as unless at least 75% of us (some would say this should be much higher) just disappear tomorrow we're basically going to burn up all the resources before we figure out how to co-exist with them. We have a chance, ozone will stop depleting in the next ~20 years and start making a comeback; it all depends on whether or not we've triggered the next ice age by the time it can recover. I think it's a decent shot but will only hold up until the next limitation we run up against.

The fact remains that we are so far beyond the Earth's capacity that without a large catastrophe or huge reversals in birth rates our long-term chances of surviving are nil. Something we'll end up taking from the planet will snowball with an effect that makes it uninhabitable. I see cleaning light pollution as one of the things which can make our time here more enjoyable (you know, like breathing clean air as well.)

While it's all well and good to try and practice conservation, even if all 6 billion of us recycled to our heart's content there wouldn't be a long-term difference seen. To survive this population requires a global paradigm shift which is about as likely as Angelina Jolie showing up at my desk to compliment my creative programming skills.

The problem I see with wireless is still the constant interference from nearby wireless networks. No matter which of 3 routers I've used, and whether it is Win XP, Ubuntu, or OSX across 3 different machines...if there are many local wireless networks I will see disconnects around every 20-30 minutes no matter what. This can't happen when using (older) business tools like terminal sessions where a hiccup in handshake causes lost work.

On top of that, I have my doubts that any actual wireless throughput will touch Gigabit. Maybe if all we are comparing is 100MB it could be comparable.

Gaming companies? It's another $60. I don't see how owning a mod-chip is illegal, if they can prove you are playing games you don't own I can understand that. What if you came here from Japan and want to play games based on that market?

I work directly with the engineers that have to certify and chemically test ever piece that goes into our machines, and MICR gets no special exception compared to anything else.

Not that I wouldn't recommend everyone wear masks when dealing with any particulate. Breathing in anything but what the body expects is "bad", period.

Imagine all that being churned by people walking on it all day.

I couldn't agree with this more. My offices are vacuumed about once a month, it's so disgusting.

What's even funnier is watching the cleaning crew come in and "dust off" the tall cabinets. This involves taking a feather duster and knocking it all off the tall cabinet onto my desk (and usually my coffee mug)

  17. Re:Obvious on Office Printers May Pose Health Risks · · Score: 5, Informative

Further to this, I find these findings quite strange. Most manufacturers go to insane lengths to avoid toner emission into the air so that they do not get an asbestos style class action suit.

Eh, maybe for smaller office printers they do but not in the commercial "toner" printing industry (like phone bills and the like). My company's printers (and our competitors) dust the entire room at an alarming rate. After working on a more dirty problem it's very likely to come out looking like a coal miner, black snot and all.

The problem is these get installed in your typical raised-floor computer rooms in the same area as storage and CPU's, sometimes not more than 10-20 feet away.

Toner isn't asbestos. Sure it's particulate and it may even be harmful (as an obstruction, like anything else) but there are way too many lifelong printer repairman in my company and lung/breathing issues are no more common here than anywhere else. I know a large number of them personally and the health problems just don't exist in any substantial amount. The division that deals with HDD and tape manufacturer has had a lot more public health issues with their materials.

Sure our company has funded studies which say Carbon Black is not harmful, but of course we all take this with a large grain of salt. I rely much more highly on the people I have personally known over the years.
