Apple's latest overall market share is around 5-6%, but in *laptops* it's much higher. Reported by Ars Technica as 12% and climbing last June. http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/7/2 5/4753

With regards to "With the popularity of notebooks, I can see this, except for the 20% by Apple, I doubt they'll surpass 10-15% at best"

Apple had 12% market share of laptop sales last June, given the rise of Apple market share since then, and the general trend, it's quite likely that 20% is within reach.

So my question is again, what are the stats on how much apple spends on os x development for such monumental gains, and why cannot microsoft with all its money hire the developers needed to, if not catch up, at least keep pace with apple?

The answer is "The Mythical Man Month", an essay on productivity, which, greatly summarised, boils down to the more people you put on a software job, the longer it takes and the worse the result. Small, close to the ground groups will outperform large mismanaged groups every time.

In 1987 Apple Computer released MacTCP, the first operating system-level, application-independent TCP/IP stack for personal computers. You couldn't even get a PC on the internet until Trumpet Winsock came out - part of the reason AOL even existed was the lack of TCP tools on the PC platform.

Apple added TCP/IP (MacTCP) to the Mac OS in 1987. Usually Apple is only 5-6 years ahead of MS, but as late as 1994, MS was treating the internet like it was a fad and was still promoting MSN.

"There currently isn't a way to sniff out what you are sending, so we wrap it all up in DRM. We can't tell if you are sending a song from a known band or your own home recording so we default to the safety of encoding."

As far as I can tell, Zune DRM's everything you put on it - it's the only way the wifi sharing would get by the labels. They're not about to allow every kid who rips a cd at home to wirelessly pass it on to their buddies, and I highly doubt the DRM is only applied while being transmitted to another Zune.

In contrast, the iPod has no DRM capability as iTunes handles all the rights management.
