Since I don't use any advanced features offered by the webmail services, it's the most basic operations that make a difference to me. It's easier to file stuff where I need to, easier to open separate windows/tabs of individual emails (I can't/don't know how to do that in gmail), I don't do tagging or searching; just real basic stuff needed here. Anything more is waaay too slow for me over the internet. I just don't get that much email, except for the corporate or junk spam which I try to direct to hotmail (they need it). :-)

I work for google too, sorry, but your post is incorrect. I'm a contractor on a project that has severely limited its temps to access outside of our building. We can't go to any of the cafes, gym, participate in _any_ company wide events, or even have access to the company network. And if we tried, we'll get fired. We've been told this many times.

I do know one person who was a contractor before he became full-time, but this certainly isn't the norm.

Funny thing, alot of the permanent people that I know of, were temps before they became permanent. They had red badges for at least 6 months before they got their white badge. Just so you know.

I'm about to graduate from SJSU as an EE, and all of the CompE students paint an ugly picture of the department. The classes are overcrowded, the instructors suck, and lots of the students suck as well. Although I have to admit, in terms of the college of engineering, there are more girls in CompE than in all of the other engineering majors combined, and pretty cute too.

They don't seem to have enough classes, and in some of my EE classes, I find lots of CompE majors. One guy was telling me that they look at the EE professors as really good and extremely competent. That is not the case, and I can't imagine what the typical CompE professor is like.

I was in one class that was being taught by one of the worst professors in the dept, and this CompE major told me that the prof would rate as one of the better intructors in the CompE dept. Oh gawd, don't do it at SJSU, Berkeley has got to be much better for compe/comp sci. Good luck.

  19. Re:Doubtful, but.... on Do Overclocked CPUs Need a "Burn In" Period? · · Score: 1

Sounds good, but that is only at "steady state" operation. Don't forget about the effects of thermal cycling, where the circuit heats up and cools down when you turn the computer on and off. This causes the metal bonding wires, and other parts to expand and contract. Some people theorize that this may eventually cause metal fatigue, especially if you're running hot.

There are actually many more things going on inside, but those are the most significant effects occuring on the chip. Much is heat related as that is the most significant factor in determining the life and operation of the chip. If your environmental temperature goes up, (hot day)the the effects of thermal cycling or even thermal effects will be much more pronounced. Sometimes your chip's temperature will even exceed the design's maximum temperature, which will bring on undefined (unknown, usually lockup) behavior.

Having said all of that, I think it is a good idea to stress test the chip, if only to find out whether or not that one chip will work when overclocked. Remember, the manufacturer specified a speed rating for a reason, that is they expect the chip to perform as advertised at that speed. Any faster, and you're really on your own. Doesn't really hurt to test it out anyway.
