    Most consumers are so impressed with the ability to watch a film instantly that they fail to think about the fact that they no longer own a physical copy of that film.
    they never owned a copy in the first place, hence the reason for renting.

    If you cancel your subscription: the film is gone.
    no shit.

    If Netflix shuts down: your access to the film is gone.
    you might as well say that if Blockbuster shuts down, you won't be able to keep watching their movies either.

    What happens 5 years from now if you want to play Spore...does the authentication still work?
    that's the only valid point so far, that you paid 50$$$ for a game that will fail to work without the interwebs or some servers sitting off somewhere. solution? don't buy the game. that's the only thing they understand.

    not only that but a more varied OS/software environment would lessen the damage that could be caused by malware/baddies in general. homogenization is likely one of the worst things to have ever happened to software in general.

    It's completely amazing... my foes go out of their way to make themselves look ignorant... it's a gift. you sir seem to be hell bent on paying as much as possible for your electric bill every month... and you seem not to understand that power plants come in FINITE sizes and actually cost a shit load of money.

    congratulations, you've missed the point entirely; and why don't your clocks run on batteries?

    But wait, there's more! It'd turn non-battery security alarm systems off when you're away. Not a good idea.
    the idea is to reduce the power you use, it doesn't mean you need to shut off your power completely [why would you if you have perishables in the fridge?] it means you can program various sections/appliances in your house to do certain things, raise the temp in the fridge a degree [reasonable power saving measure] or high demand appliances like washers/dryers/dishwashers start at a time that is less straining on power etc. your choice. the bottom line is that you would have the ability to automate the use of power in your house so it 1) can save $$ and 2) put less of a strain on the grid during high demand. why? too high of a demand can cuase blackouts and wtf are you going to do when your power shuts off pretty much RANDOMLY in your house around that time?

    you're under the false impression that government must exist for its self and anything else is anarchy er serfdom as you put it. The government must be for the people and by the people, if it exists to merely serve and protect its self rather than those it is supposed to represent it must be dissolved or at the least altered to serve OUR interests not ITS interests.

    Now that we've found Naquada, when can we expect the invasion of the Goa'uld? but seriously, if this is confirmed, it would be one of the single greatest discoveries made in physics. a near stable nuclear isotope in the superheavy island of stability: that alone would be amazing but finding it in nature requires that there be a mechanism for synthesizing it and that's even more interesting.

    Unless there's a problem with the command you send out and it completely wipes the end users hard drive and all their personal data or does something else destructive to the infected user.
    an OS shouldn't allow that, then again it shouldn't allow you to get pwned by visiting malicious web pages or opening emails either. The problem is that you're talking about a hypothetical problem that may or may not exist. Storm is real and doing real damage to the world. sitting back and watching the fireworks just because you're afraid to break something is in my opinion irresponsible.

    It would be ironic if it were not completely expected. I think it would be interesting to see M$ try to spin this one, that at least one of two things must be true: 1) OOXML sucks 2) their software sucks because it can't even follow a standard they themselves created. Probably something along the lines of: "the standard is a significant improvement over Office 2007 which we will implement in our new version." or "We tried to make OOXML a great standard but our efforts were thwarted by outside forces" [in other words their new revisions]

    Xenon isn't exactly in great supply
    Xenon is present in our atmosphere at roughly 1 part in 180 million and so its cost is about 1 dollar per gram. considering it costs about 25 dollars a gram to launch things into orbit, Xenon isn't that bad when you consider that just a fraction of the fuel is required for the same thrust as chemical fuels. It is used because it is more easily ionized than the higher "inert" gases, is relatively un-reactive and is more easily utilized in the engine, as it is already a gas.

    you know, the "to hell with the blind let them fend for themselves" rhetoric is getting old. I mean really, the only arguments so far seem to be either along the lines of it's too expensive to introduce basic accessibility into web pages or that we shouldn't bother because you think it would be an inconvenience. that's... just... disgusting.

    how exactly would that help people whose nerve connections between their limbs and their brain have been severed? that is a lot of the reason why cybernetics/prosthetics are being researched after all.
