Yeah, I did get a batch of mod points too, right before this happened, and I think I got 15 of them. Haven't gotten any since though.

My bonus went away right when I was making replies to an article as AC (had to do it that way because I moderated that conversation too). I did quite a few replies(since it was a topic I know something about). Maybe I got on some kind of list.

As you can see, I changed my sig. Don't think I've gotten any responses though. Hopefully we're not the only ones -- if so, we're probably just screwed.

  6. I disagree... on DARPA Cyber Range Project Doomed to Failure · · Score: 4, Interesting

Saying that a simulated Internet for cyberwaarfare (note the new meme!) has no point is like saying a simulated Earth has no point for studying global warming. To effectively study you need controls and variables. Having real controls on the actual Internet is impossible, not to mention the fact you'd be vulnerable to surveillance.

I also find it interesting to find that people say a realistic simulation is impossible, while in the same breath complaining this project costs too much. $30 Billion obviously won't get you 100% there, but I'll bet it'll get you there with 95% confidence. Yeah, I suppose you could argue that because that 5% exists, the project has no meaning, but any engineering effort has a little slack in it. If history is any indication DARPA should do a fairly good job at managing that risk.

Your idea may seem logical on its surface, but will ultimately result in creating a permanent underclass and undercutting the principles of meritocracy in our society.

If someone is born without the help of a good parent/grandparent, they will start out below normal, but given an opportunity will have a shot at contributing significantly to society, if not by themselves directly, through their children who will be taught better.

This is for real. China is on the rise. Japan couldn't do it because no matter how productive they were, they still had 1) limited land area/natural resources and 2) limited population, relative to ours

It is a logical fallicy to assume that because this has been predicted before, it is not real this time. The best hope we have of countering a strong Chinese influence is India. So next time you speak to your friendly Indian "code factory" worker, blow them a kiss and wish them good luck.

China has a number of things which makes me think it'll be top dog for only a few decades, but their capacity to beat us is much more potent than Japan's. Believe it.
