HA! What a laughable concept an "army of artificial soldiers" is. Why ON EARTH do you figure an AI would build these things when they could do something as easy as say... off the top of my head 1) destroy our atmosphere 2) Create a virulent disease 3) Kill our abilities to effectively communicate with one another... the list goes on and on and on.
There is/will be no defense against strong AI, anymore than the population of ants could rise up and defeat humans.
If they try to "make it cool" in an attempt to make it accessible, it will fail and be quite embarrassing (see HoL rap above!).
If they make it accessible by speaking plainly, relating the issues to how they affect young people, Britain, and the world, it might have a shot at moderate success. (particularly if they show it in schools)
In any event, if executed halfway decently, I believe they should be commended for trying, regardless of the outcome.
You make a clear argument and if everyone in the world was as thoughtful and international law-abiding as you, you'd have a good plan that I would agree with whole-heartedly (I'm not being a sarcastic ass here, I see where you're coming from).
But there are jerks in this world that would like to kill us, so that makes you wrong... dead wrong. Failing to recognize enemies and treat them as such is a fatal mistake many countries have made (see France c. WWII).
(And you are correct about WWI really being the end of our isolationism. But we were in no mood for open conflict after WWI, hence lend-lease and our provocation of the Nazis and Japanese)
Eh, but I'd consider the universe to be able to support things many, many times more complex than us simple humans. Personally speaking, I still haven't heard a deal breaker for me.
Hofstadter was the first person I ever heard of that gave (rather, was supposed to give) a rebuttal of the singularity concept -- his presentation, IMO was garbage. However, most of the best objections I've heard have come directly from/. Though like I said, I remain fairly confident it will happen.
Ron Paul is an isolationist, when measured against current American policies. After Iraq, this is the direction the country is going to go in once the oldies that remember Pearl Harbor die off.
(myOpinion)This is not good news for the United States or the world. (\myOpinion)

I was looking forward to hearing a coherent rebuttal of the singularity, because it seemed to make so much sense to me once I heard the theory completely laid out. This is Hofstadter's response - I can say I was not impressed by his argument or rationale.
In fact I can say I don't recall seeing either in his presentation... just an "it's not possible" attitude.
Clearly you know what you're talking about... even more clearly GP doesn't. We "overproduced"?! Give me a break... what economic theory does this originate from?
I emphatically restate my opinion. Thank your non-local democratically minded Indian code slinging outsource guru. They are likely the only thing standing between us and Chinese domination.
I could've sworn just the other day I heard something about this. I believe it WAS mentioned that England was again becoming viable grape territory... but this could just be a fuzzy 3A memory.
The iPhone won't put these games to death, but the nextGen smart phones will (timeline? Anyone's guess). They'll die because they suck, not because the iPhone is indestructible.
Why is the military so much more progressive (with practical results) than any other institution of government? Military is the expression of the power of a nation as a whole... the means by which nations, using their national resources, keep ahead of the pack. The rest of the government is bloated bureaucracy designed to keep that powerful military in check and keep society functioning.
With a working model "3-4 years out", I'll believe it when I see it (e-ink has always been ~5 years away as long as I can remember). But at least they're moving towards something, and maybe this time, it's different, I dunno.
And as long as we're talking pipe dreams of flexible, usable computing materials. This one from Nokia is by far my fav (I found this via the lifeboat.com foundation website)...
Oh for shit's sake (directed toward myself)... I'm not guilty of yanking your chain, I'm guilty of stupidity and a casual interaction with a web page which causes me to not understand exactly how things work... (I read/. for fun, so I don't pay attention to the details)
Ok, here's what's going on as far as I can tell... I'm dumb (at least as far as this situation is concerned). Prior to my little change I outlined a few posts ago, I had a modifier set on my preferences page to bonus those with good karma. THAT is the setting I changed, thinking (dimly) that I could take down my karma bonuses on my previous posts and, after a few days rev it back up. I really only changed the way I see my posts and those with good Karma. This explains why I see other people's comments getting less points too. Yeah... not smart.
Now, as far as what I saw on your scoring, that's a different story. I don't see anything on your score because as you say you're not getting a karma bonus. When I click on those that have karma bonuses I see their modifiers. (Oddly, I don't see my own bonus when clicking on my score though -- that's what threw the addt'l twist on me).
Why you're not getting karma, I really don't know (sorry). I'd tell you to double check your 'no karma bonus' setting, but sure you've done it 1000 times.
I'll keep my sig like this for a while and see if there are any responses. I'll let you know if I get replies from anyone.
Or am I the only one that doesn't want my tax dollars going to pay for something which benefits Disney and Steve Wynn? If you want to improve public infrastructure, that's great, but this seems quite commercial to me.
10MM seems low to me for such a big job though. Maybe this is just the gov't portion to get the project moving? (and if this is the case, how much will we be on the hook for if things go bad?) I'm skeptical here...
Well, you're right, if a bit behind the times. This has been in place for years and is Amtrak's ONE success story. It's profitable, convenient, and people use and like it.
In attempting to reform Amtrak, legislatures point to this and say "why can't everything be like the Northeast". This is an absurd question, of course. The NE is densely populated and parking is a mess. Of course that will be the only place this works.
When I click on the score link, I get no breakdown whatsoever. I haven't seen anything on the score breakdown page since I went to this new discussion system -- just a blank page.
I still see my posts coming up as a score of '1'.
Yeah, this is bizarre; there were many, many times I've seen posts on articles start out with a '3', not just my own. Maybe you're right and I just changed the way *I* see them. I always assumed people were posting with 3's by default when they had excellent karma. It couldn't be a friend issue, because you're the first person I've friended on/.
I dunno... weird. So now you're seeing me with a score of '2'? Odd that I'd see it as a '1'. I'm so cornfused.
That's a very general and over simplistic statement. I know very well what Ron Paul stands for and I disagree with most of what he says. Therefore I did not support his candidacy. Just because people disagree with you, it does not mean they're stupid or ignorant.

Isolationism by any name is still the same. What is the difference, as you see it?

AIs rising will be the biggest thing since fire... no, scratch that... the biggest thing since DNA

(Keeping with pithy questions)...
Have we ever used hacking techniques against another nation?
I guess it's better than the Chewbacca defense... if only slightly.

Who's excited? I'm not saying if it's good or bad, I'm saying this is the truth.
How much, in terms of emissions, did this "emission free" device require when it was built? Perhaps more than 6,500 light bulbs worth of pollution?
Here's a vid of the fabric PC...
