Vista under a VM has worked fine for me since January using VirtualBox, the open source VM manager. Once again, the FOSS is months ahead of proprietary... The only thing that doesn't work is the 3D effects, which don't matter.

If I paid for it then it should work (shouldn't break/shouldn't be so easily exploitable). If I didn't pay for it then I should expect to make a contribution. This isn't always how it happens in the real world, though.
If the open project has a huge community (e.g. Apache) there tend to be even fewer exploits than in commercial software. May I remind you of IIS?
