You don't have protest parties? Here in Canada I've often voted for the Rhinoceros Party as I know they'll keep their promise not to keep any of their promises, promises such as repealing the law of gravity, building taller schools to promote higher education, annexing the United States and making it a territory, put an end to crime by abolishing all laws and so on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R...
Well making women sit at the back of the bus is a kind of Apartheid. Of course Americans usually are in favour of Apartheid, you just have to look at their friends such as the Saudis, Kuwait and various other middle eastern countries, even going so far as to bomb and invade one of the few countries where women had close to equal rights and making sure of a huge mess, but it did make sure women were back in their place, no more education or wearing skirts
That's only true of the American brand of libertarian. There are also leftists who are libertarian and they are the only ones who have had any real influence. Examples include Gandhi, the Dali Llama and Mandela. Note I'm using the original definition of libertarian being the opposite of totalitarian and being one of the other 2 axis of politics.
In the interviews with her I've heard, she has also talked quite a bit about peace and how the likes of the Taliban do not stand for Muslims and how she understands her religion. This cuts to one of the big problems facing us, namely the fact that groups such as the Taliban and ISIS are trying there hardest to make the west think that they are representative of Islam and therefore promote religious war.
Back before the science was banned, there was quite a bit of research with psychedelic drugs, mostly LSD, on the mentally ill and quite often between the drug and having a good guide, people were cured of their irrationality, or perhaps a better description was that they were helped to be more rational. Wiki is one place to start, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...
They're ignoring a lot of the prep work that needs to be done to even entertain the idea of a long time research station, little well a colony. Need to do lots of exploring to decide on an ideal spot, somewhere with readily available water for a starts and most people forget that Mars has the same land area as the Earth. Then there is the new technology that will be required such as a nuclear generator that functions on Mars, something that should be quite possible but will require engineering and testing and likely re-engineering. Machinery to mine the atmosphere is another big one, going to need nitrogen at least. Then there are the other practical problems that might show up such as the effects of the finings (Martian dust) which may get into everything and being mostly iron oxide could be hard on electronics. As long as it takes 16-18 months just to make the trip, things are going to be slow.
Only now do I notice that you put your comment in the subject. Hint, some people read the comment box rather then the subject and at least you should duplicate your message in the message box. Personally if I was using my mod points in this article, I wouldn't have done more then skim your message and skipped it even though it deserved up-modding.
You posted a comment that said nothing besides "[nothing else needs to be said]", it's a weird way to agree with the GP and doesn't add anything to the discussion.
What's wrong with heroin (besides the points about manufacture etc that you made)? It's just another opiate, not much different then the prescription drug store opiates that a hell of Americans are addicted to. If someone is in pain, why should they not have access to a pain killer?
Virginia did the same for Charles Lynch back in 1782. Of course all he did was hold an informal court which sentenced people to whippings, property forfeiture and such.
You should really look into how the loyalists were treated in the American war of separation. Remember that the loyalists were as much citizens of the colonies as any other white person and that while no polls were done, the usual breakdown in those situations is about 1/3rd for, 1/3rd against and 1/3rd indifferent which is why revolutionaries never act democratically (they're as likely to lose as win), at least until they've thoroughly terrorized the opposition. Also consider some of the revolutionaries names that have come into common usage such as Lynch. As usual the winners write the history to make themselves look good. Other examples include the American trained freedom fighters in Central and South America and Vietnam where standard procedure included destroying villages to save them and so much more horrible shit in the name of fighting for freedom. The same shit is still going on but the American military has learned to control the press which is why when peoples go nuts after having their family killed, we can pretend they're just nutcases.
That's when suddenly industry stopped fighting the child labour laws
I'm pretty sure you know that the Koch Brothers are fighting to repeal child labor laws in 18 states, right?
Actually I didn't but it doesn't surprise me too much if it is also going along with scrapping the minimum wage.
Now school is still one of the ways to get people out of the market.
And now they have huge student loans from those schools. You think there's any chance we're going to see government pay for college any time soon in the US?
As I hinted in my comment, business loves new employees that are so far in debt that they'll do any work no matter how abusive the environment. Shit here even McDonalds uses foreign workers so they can put them to work in the wrong restaurant and then abuse the shit out of them with the threat of revoking their visa. Better then raising wages and providing a good work environment.
new labourers
Oh, I see why you have such an optimistic view. You don't live in the US.
Things are worse here, even the Texan Republicans tell my government that they're too extreme. Houses cost between 1 and 2 million with buying a house taking 70% of pre-tax median income for a household and everything else costing 1/3rd as much while wages are stagnant for most and the median is about the same as America.. With a better education then my parents I'm poorer and my son has a really shitty future ahead, can't even afford a basement for him.
We reached the point of not needing everyone to work at the turn of the last century. That's when suddenly industry stopped fighting the child labour laws and universal schooling was introduced to give the young something to do besides standing on street corners getting into trouble. Everyone between perhaps 5 and 15 years taken out of the labour market. Next (for a while) was women with the stay at home mom theme which took a huge amount of people out of the labour market. Instead of whole households going to work, there was one full time worker. Now school is still one of the ways to get people out of the market. When I went to school, perhaps half the students quit after grade 10, spent a year or two at technical school and went to work. Now you need to have a few years of collage and soon quite a few years of university to get damn near any job, and the beauty of the current system is that the new labourers go into the job market in debt to their ears and that more desperate.
While loading, slashdot still has Slashdot:news for nerds, stuff that matters as the title of the window. Goes away once loaded though and maybe unnoticeable on other then dial-up or other browsers then SeaMonkey
Good point about some of the colonists, I believe some of the others were basically felons and other poor people who also had no supplies or knowledge of farming or living off the land (maybe I'm confusing Australia) And yes, Antarctica is the closest to Mars. All we have is research stations and it takes a huge amount of equipment for a research station to make it through the winter and that is with air and water locally available.
North America was successfully colonized with stone age technology. When the Europeans arrived, there were already people living in most every environment, even on the shores of the Arctic ocean, surviving with stone age technology. The European colonists could just ask about the plants etc and the only advanced technology they needed to support their lifestyle was blacksmithing and ship waning (carpentry). What made it hard was that they showed up to steal and conquer an already occupied continent.. How can you compare colonizing Mars and colonizing N. America?
The paper doesn't say black holes don't exist, it says they can't be created by a massive star collapsing. They may have been created in the big bang or perhaps by a neutron star growing or colliding or other unknown process. Lots of evidence for the existence of black holes but you never know what may be discovered.
There's a few things that have made us technologically successful hands, communication, culture and so on. Dolphins are missing hands or equivalent while octopi have useful tentacles. Find a video of an octopus opening a jar, it's interesting. Of course as the sibling pointed out, living under water is a huge disadvantage but octopi could evolve to leave the water. The Seattle aquarium was having a problem with crabs going missing in a tank, couldn't figure it out so they set up a camera. The octopus down the hall was sneaking out at night and going down the hall for a crab dinner, and then returning to its tank so given motivation they will leave the water..
The thing with octopi and such is no family or culture to pass on knowledge. They lay eggs and leave them to develop on their own so every generation is starting from scratch. People have been successful due to being tribal, family orientated species that builds on the previous generations knowledge. Intelligence by itself isn't enough to develop technology which is what we mean when talking about intelligence.
They're dealing with Canadian banks (credit cards) so do have presence here. Just as the US can order banks not to deal with certain countries, we can order banks not to deal with certain companies.
Whether we should in this case is a whole different question.

There's possible and there is practical. While we're on the cusp of it being possible, it'll be a long time before it is practical.

American government does it regularly, often not worrying about collateral damage as well. Just need to declare someone the right type of scum.
Don't forget regulating them. They should be regulated much as alcohol is, so you know what you're purchasing, purchasers are of age and so on.
