Funny enough the countries with quite a bit of socialism such as the Nordic countries have the most social mobility with America coming in second worst after the UK when it comes to be able to move into a different social economic class as your parents. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_mobility#Country_comparison Seems the best move is to take the best of the various isms instead of pretending that one ism is far superiour.
Wouldn't a better example be Norway or other N European first world countries? Using Venezuela as a typical socialist country is like using Somalia as a typical capitalist country. I'd guess there are more large screen TVs available in Scandinavia then in Somalia.
Sometimes there are failures that aren't on the checklist. The Gimli glider comes to mind where they ran out of gas at 35000 ft. When the all engines out alarm went off, they reached for the checklist and discovered there was no entry as it wasn't supposed to happen. With all engines out they lost all electrical and hydraulic pressure and were informed that a 777 can't glide. Luckily the captain was an accomplished glider pilot and the co-pilot knew of an abandoned airfield and with luck they landed without killing any passengers or people picnicking on the runway (it was being used for car racing) and through luck they picked the least occupied runway and the nose gear failing stopped them quicker then the brakes could. Imagine being on the ground when suddenly a silent airliner lands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_glider
Yea, that's why I referred to the summary and mentioned the coercion exception. From further reading it definitely comes under the coercion heading which is a violation of the basic right against unreasonable search.
The problem is when rights conflict. The classic example is that my right to swing my fist ends in the space you occupy. Another is my right of mobility vs your right to private property. In this case it seems to be the right not to be ran over by an impaired driver vs the right not to be unreasonably searched. While this case seems to go far over the line there is a line somewhere and balancing rights close to that line is hard.
Don't know about Australia but in Canada where our constitution does give the right against unreasonable search and seizure the courts have ruled that the cops can demand a drivers license from someone operating a motor vehicle and the cops take the opportunity to take a good sniff and if they smell anything suspicious they have probable cause to demand a breath sample. Refusing to blow is treated the same as being impaired when it comes to punishment. Bodily fluids do require a warrant as what could be more invasive then searching the interiour of your body. You also can request a sample for independent testing as why should the courts only have the crowns evidence.
The summary said this was volunteer, the cops are free to ask for permission to search you and you're free to say no. No rights violated unless there is coercion or such. Around here all the cops can do is ask to see your license and registration. They do lean really close and sniff and if they smell something suspicious they can demand a breath sample. Demanding a blood sample IIRC always needs a warrant as searching the interior of your body is as invasive as it gets. For you to defend yourselves they take 2 blood samples so you can independently test one. This is Canada
In Canada it is a Doctor or medical technician, who can refuse to draw blood if they don't feel like maybe being subpoenaed to court later and they have to take 2 samples so you can request one and get an independent test.
You want manure forks, not spading forks. Luckily they're also available (only 50,000 a year) at alibaba, http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/620578979/manure_fork.html, handles a little short though, the one I carry in my truck has closer to a six foot handle.
In Canada we aren't (weren't) allowed to ban them due to the free trade agreement. The Americans needed somewhere to sell MTBE and us banning it would be considered anti-competitive leading to huge law suits.
Detuned is probably the wrong word. IIRC ethanol has a different ideal air/fuel ratio then gasoline and back in carburetor days, to burn pure ethanol you needed quite a bit larger jets. Possibly some vehicles are tuned to aim for a different air/fuel ratio then the ideal 24.7:1 air gas ratio.
Makes you wonder if the newer fuel injected, computerized cars are screwed by the ethanol, perhaps overcompensating in how much fuel is delivered by the injectors as I used to drive quite long distances and my mileage was very consistent (30-32 Imp MPG) whether using straight gas or E10. What did make a difference was the season with quite a bit worse mileage in the winter. Whether caused by the cold or the gasolines winter mix I have no idea. About the pinging, I kept the truck well tuned though the compression was probably a bit high due to having shaved the head after a head gasket failure and as it was usually only one brand of gas that caused excessive pinging I'm more inclined to blame the gas formulation, something that can vary a lot.
The octane only helps to stop the fuel from predetonating, allowing a higher compression ratio which should burn more efficiently, probably helping me as I had shaved the head down after a head gasket failure. The smoother burning comes from the ethanol being an oxygenator, allowing more complete burning. This is probably less important with a recent computerized fuel injected engine but was quite important at one time. A little googling does seem to agree that having an oxygenator added to the fuel is not so important now with a variety of opinions but I can't find any actual good recent studies on it. I'll assume that better combustion chamber design, better injectors and better algorithms have reduced the need. I forget the numbers but reading an article on our smog testing going away, it was amazing how much less pollution is put out in a city of a few million and that most of the improvement was due to better engine design.
Back when we first got smog tests here one chain of gas stations advertised ethanol enriched gasoline and how it would help pass the smog test. I scored pretty low numbers when using it. Never noticed much difference in mileage and even now the crappiest mileage I get is when I fill up at one of the few stations that sell pure gasoline. Previously with my last vehicle which had no computer, my truck would ping like crazy on the pure regular grade gasoline from that particular station. The ethanol boosts the octane and improves burning. Of course your mileage will vary based on the mixture they're selling and even the gas stations that mix in ethanol actually advertise it as up to 5 or 10% ethanol so what you are actually getting... BTW here in Canada the ethanol is made from grain (wheat?) rather then corn. Don't know how that affects the economics.
The pulp paper producers managed to get the competing product made from hemp illegalized along with all other hemp products and now the prisons are overflowing
Always good to check posted links:) Having conscription has a lot to say for it, especially for nations that aren't always at war. I'd feel a lot better about people having been trained in the use of weapons if they own them rather then treating them as toys.
Generally government is always more efficient then private business, at least in large projects such as health care as no need to make a profit, no excessive paperwork such as results with Doctors having to bill multiple organizations and perhaps fight over the billing when the other organization is motivated to pay out as little as possible as well as economy of scale, easier to get good deals when purchasing millions of dollars worth of whatever. Of course like all generalizations there are many exceptions, governments that don't try due to ideological beliefs, businesses that take advantage of the government, governments that are in bed with businesses and rather then businesses giving cost of living raises, the government gives tax breaks so business can make higher profits. I'm sure that there are many more exceptions but the important thing is to have a government that tries to serve the people rather then campaign contributors, businesses that offer great jobs after the politician leaves politics etc.
The real question is what is the standard of living like after paying those taxes, including how much net is left. If your income goes up with the taxes, eg make 50% more before taxes, then it's not so bad. Same with if expenses drop so even though you have less money, you need less money as you don't have to pay for certain things such as quality health care.
. Any decrease in spending is an increase in the amount that taxpayers can keep for themselves.
This is the mistake that Regressives always make. As if lowering taxes means more money in your pocket when the reality is that it is a reason to not give out raises and perhaps even wage cuts. As long as your take home pay hasn't dropped, why complain about your gross income dropping? Meanwhile fees for everything goes up and before you know it you're actually poorer with the tax cut then without it unless you're one of the ones at the top of the pyramid in which case lower taxes are great, you can cut wages and make more profit.
As the AC says, denser wood generally burns hotter and better. Hotter fire means less pollution. Where I am, the best is cherry, followed by birch and then maple. Maple would probably be the best to plant for firewood as it is fast growing, burns well and can even be poltoraked (sp?), cut the tops off and let the lower stems resprout new wood. As the roots are already there, the tops grow fast.
This is Canada, our court system is nowhere as bad as America has. At that I can't ever remember hearing of a (Canadian) court case of parents suing the schools for things like playground accidents. This is a traditional school, so ran by right wing religious nuts who are scared shitless of things like human contact and have a very authoritarian bent.
Do you really believe the former owners of America volunteered for genocide? Or perhaps the English commoner volunteered to have their common property enclosed and given to the rich? Capitalism usually (always?) results in violence if left alone as if someone is strong enough to take something, why not take it? Look to Mexico for a really free market in drugs and how that is playing out.

Yes, typo on my part. Thanks
