Not strictly funding but various companies supply developers. As an example the OS/2 port I'm using was developed by IBM employees who seemed to spend all their time working on Mozilla. And even though OS/2 development has stopped they are still there. I also know a Sun employee who also spends a lot of time on Mozilla. Note by Mozilla I mean the whole family, lots of people I know don't like Firefox and use Seamonkey
The weirdest part in the parents post to me is this line
stayed in line for several hours to get to vote How the hell are things going to change when it takes hours to vote? You'd have to be pretty motivated, like the guy who really doesn't want gays to marry. I'm in Canada, voting means standing in line for a couple of minutes. I doubt very much I would continue to vote if it took hours.
Well the British colonies in North America (and Australia) were basically made up of British people who were already used to a fair amount of democracy for the time. Parliament in England had quite a bit of power compared to the crown unlike most other European countries. Most other colonies were mostly made up of their native people ie India consisted of people who had been living there for many generations without any traditions of democracy. Also a lot of the motivation for war of independence was economic. American business was at a severe disadvantage due to English corporations having government mandated monopolies in many areas. A good example was the Boston tea party which was led by a tea importer who was unfairly taxed compared to the English competition. Of course being a frontier area people were used to quite a bit of independence and freedom and this was used to motivate the common people to support the war. Lots of people did disagree with the war and were quite discriminated at the time and many moved to Canada which was one reason that Canada stayed loyal to the crown. I'm not sure how Washington would feel about present conditions but I'm pretty sure Jefferson would freak. Jefferson really did believe in freedom and I believe he actually wrote that revolutions had to happen regularly to avoid the pitfalls that come from governments that have been in power to long. Of course nowadays Jefferson would just be labeled a conspiracy theorist and ignored.
Most revolutions come in times of despair. When you look at the French and the Russian revolution, both were in the end caused by people having the alternative of either starving to death or overthrowing the government. I'm not so sure about the American revolt. Maybe it was the only one that wasn't caused by utter desperation.
The American revolution wasn't really a revolution but more a war of secession. The Americans did not want to kill England's ruling class, just wanted to get out from under their thumb. Quite different from the French or Russian revolutions.
Diebold ATM' have always run general purpose operating systems. Just that before Windows they ran an operating system that could be stripped down to the bare essentials.
Here in Canada you are quite welcome to watch the locked box until it is taken aside and in the presence of members of at least 2 political parties (often more) it is opened and the ballots counted.
Really to appreciate the original simcity you had to have no exposure to the later ones. I loved simcity but after being exposed to sc2000 I couldn't go back.

I guess this is the reason that the US of A has the highest ratio of police to civilians in the world, as it gives them the lowest crime rate in the world.
You miss the point. Hemp, a very big cash crop was illegalized to protect the pulp paper industry which had just been perfected by William Randolph Hearst. Hemp had been the traditional source of paper for a long time and in the 1930's the invention of decorticator promised to make the production of hemp paper not labour intensive anymore. So the leading newspaper magnate made political contributions to get the law changed and using his newspapers to demonized hemp. Other industrialists such as DuPont also backed the new laws so they could supply things like the newly invented nylon as a replacement for hemp (clothes and rope at least) So everyone in jail for anything to do with marijuana are martyrs to protecting the pulp wood paper industry.
Actually Microsoft did not have to work very hard at all to get into all the stores. They lucked out in getting the contract for the OS on IBM PCs and an excellent licensing deal where they kept control and rode IBM and compatibles coat tails.
As I remember the story when it happened one of the most amazing parts was that the 767 was not supposed to be able to glide at all. Your sibling post mentions that he knows commercial pilots who like playing in gliders and they feel that all commercial pilots should have to put some in hours in a glider. Learn thermals etc.
Actually that is Her Majesty the Queen of Canada. When I became a Canadian citizen I had to swear allegiance to the Queen of Canada even though by birth (England) she was already my Queen. Be interesting if Canada and England ever went to war as I owe allegiance to the Queen on both sides:)
While growth rings, ice cores etc are being used what they look at is the amount of carbon 14 deposited. Seems that as the Sun changes in activity different amounts of cosmic rays hit the Earth and cause different amounts of Nitrogen to be transmuted into Carbon 14. IIRC lots of sunspots = active upper atmosphere which blocks cosmic rays so less Carbon 14 being produced and stored in tree rings etc.
If a team I'm on creates an icon like Mickey Mouse, I wouldn't want others to use said icon without my consent. If they did, they could destroy the value of the icon. That is what trademark law is for. Notice that trademarks do not expire. (Though you do have to defend them or you lose them)
I've been considering the idea of only support Firefox, Opera, and IE 7 for my new project and this move makes my choice easier. Please support all gecko based browsers. I run Seamonkey and it is very irritating when sites only support Firefox. There is no reason that a gecko based browser has to masquerade as Firefox
The theory of gravity is only a theory too. Just like the theory of evolution there is room for improvement in the knowledge of the process of evolution and gravity. Darwin's theory has been modified by things like increased knowledge of mutations and viruses helping genes cross species. Newtons theory of gravity has been modified by things like relativity. And one thing I don't understand about creationists is that they always say that the universe is too wonderful for it to be an accident so they figure something much more unlikely, namely a super being called God, must of spontaneously appeared and created everything. To me it seems much more unlikely that a God can just appear out of nothing.
Actually in the 1720's the knowledge of inoculating against smallpox by using some pus from an infected individual was introduced to Europe from the middle east. It was somewhat hit or miss whether you got a mild infection and immunity or a full blown infection. In the 1790's Edward Jenner started experimenting with cowpox and invented the word vaccination (from Latin for cow, vacca) to cover the procedure of exposing someone to cowpox so they would have immunity to smallpox. Funny thing is until the mid 1800's it was believed that smallpox was the only disease that was contagious.
Well never having heard of Ward Churchill I looked him up and it seems that he was active pretty recently. First essay being published in '86. Considering I was taught about the smallpox blankets in school in '72 or so when Ward Churchill was still in University I doubt very much he started the story. Not much evidence has survived from the 18th century regarding whether smallpox was willingly introduced but some has. Here http://www.nativeweb.org/pages/legal/amherst/34_40_305_fn.jpeg and http://www.nativeweb.org/pages/legal/amherst/34_41_114_fn.jpeg are a couple of letters by Lord Amherst discussing giving the infected blankets to the Indians. Shortly after the Indians did have a major outbreak of smallpox. Note also that George Washington was very worried about the English pulling the same stunt and was very careful about where blankets and other supplies came from. Another method of biological warfare used on the natives was just not inoculating them. During one outbreak in BC white men were inoculated but not the natives leading to most of the native population from Washington to Alaska being wiped out. On the other hand it seems that in the 1830's attempts were made to inoculate the natives along with every one else. Note that smallpox has been known to be contagious since the 1720's. At that for close to 150 years it was considered to be the only disease that was contagious.
Do you consider Americans and Europeans responsible for the ones who were killed by naturally spreading smallpox?
You do realize that a lot of the smallpox was spread by giving the natives blankets that had been used by people with smallpox. Basically biological warfare.

Perhaps simpler to run the original DOS version of sc2000 in DOSbox?

Sure, probably the most famous was the Dodge brothers vs Ford Motor Company. A quick summary is at Wikipedia of course, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_v._Ford_Motor_Company

What about all the people that have been put in jail, given criminal records etc to protect the pulp paper industry from the evil hemp paper

Commercial pilots with glider experience always remind me of the Gimli glider http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider worth the read.

So was Windows at one time
Nor has anyone from Iraq or Afghanistan either.
