A few years back when I was getting my BS in CS I thought some of the classes were going to be MS centric but only the ones for the Business students were. My teachers were mostly from the punchcard / mainframe / unix days, so that's what we heard about and studied. My Operating Systems class was all theory and touched on MS's NT, but focused on Unix.
I eventually got my MCSE outside of college, but I think the theory that I learned is why I am such a big Linux and Mac OS X fan. Keep MS out of the classroom!
Ain't nothin' wrong with Slummerville. I lived in Davis Sq for a couple of years and had decent cable modem service. I did look at the apartments near the Museum of Science with the T1s, but they made Davis look cheap. Who wants to ride the Green Line anyway...
Depending on where you live there is always the RCN option. I've had good service from them for cable, and local/long distance phone. It did take them a month to get my cable modem working (both times I've moved), so I'd be weary of that. The quality of service is just as good, and a heck of a lot cheaper than MediaOne...I mean AT&T.
The device plugs into the network, and after entering some network info, is ready to go. I'm not sure what platforms the admin software runs on, but it includes a copy of Circulate with it. It will scan up to 15 ppm (if I remember correctly) and save the result as a pdf. You can then 'Circulate' it to make is searchable. You can also hook it into certain internet fax providers, as well as tie it into Domino DBs, and other potentially useful things.
I'm not sure if this is ideal for your situation, but I thought I would throw it out there. You can get one on loan for a couple of months, so it might be worth a shot.

and check out the Sony's Home Theatre ES Receivers - Not too shabby.

Mindstorms have always been great, but the "Droid Developer Kit" is my pick for this year's robot geek lover.
