Well, one obvious thing that can be done is to put each app on a core if it's a single-core app. There's no reason for your browser, word processor, e-mail, and spreadsheet all to be running on the first core even if they're all single-core apps. This alone would at least help out with multitasking.
"hunting down a binary package" consists of either 'apt-get install vim' as root on Debian-based systems, 'emerge vim' on Gentoo, 'yum install vim' on RPM-based systems (basically everything else except slackware and linux from scratch, and I think you can even set those up to use apt or yum.) In most cases, there's a graphical frontend. The GNOME package manager in Debian-based systems is basically "check box to install program". Checkbox next to firefox, evolution, OO.org, etc, etc.
As a Georgia Tech student, I find it hilarious that U[sic]GA felt the need to actually research the "boiling frog" legend. On the other hand, Tech actually gets stuff done.
Yes, that's what I mean by "sticking points". In another industry, AutoCAD is a huge sticking point- so huge, in fact, it makes Linux migration impossible. GIMP + Krita may be a suitable replacement for Photoshop in an industry that does lightweight image editing (say the occasional company poster, or occasional image with the company logo inserted, and so forth) but most likely not suitable for a full-time graphic artist shop.
This same AC has posted this exact same post to the exact same person multiple times. I suggest repeated applications of "-1 troll" and perhaps an administrator should step in and block this chunk of text in any post from an AC with the word "twitter" in it.
In fact, you can see it twice in this thread. There really should be a way to foe or block a specific AC.:\
From what I understand OOCalc handles any north american excel formulas (ie: it may not handle MROUND because that's in the excel european formula set- that's the only example I can't think of off the top of my head and it may actually handle that anyway).

Considering that OpenSolaris is Free/Opensource software, I see no reason why Solaris and Linux wouldn't essentially end up being one and the same within the next couple years, which would make Sun the next Red Hat, only with more money. (I think.)
Linux works fine on the laptop. Use an Ubuntu livedisc (dapper or edgy- dapper has Long Term Support, whereas Edgy is more up to date) to test it out to make sure it works before installing, and when installing do a dualboot- it's not hard to do (literally all you have to do is check the radio button to partition the hard disc and select the percentage of the HD to give the preexisting OS) and that way if things don't work out in ubuntu your windows install is safe and sound, leaving you free to try out another distro.
I specify Ubuntu because it has a livedisc installer, and I know the partitioning on the installer is extremely easy to do- doesn't hurt that Ubuntu is also a fairly newbie-friendly distro.
That said, if you want to prepare yourself for a switch in general, the best thing to do is replace as many of your current apps with crossplatform and/or opensource apps, and open or standard file formats for all your documents- OpenOffice.org, gAIM, Firefox for more common stuff; xchat ( http://silenceisdefeat.org/~b0at/xchat/win32/ - several builds don't have the $20 fee), and so forth for less common apps. Mostly, applications are interchangeable, files may not be. You need to identify any sticking points first, before the switch- this applies to any platform.
Don't blame linux or os x for being "broken" when "broken" really just means "different". This is generally more a problem with old geezers/technophobes, but also a problem with people who are used to Windows's way of doing things.
It's been said by some that the people who have the hardest time switching are the "power users", because they have a lot of knowledge of "how to do *somewhat advanced thing*" that isn't the same across OSes. An example would be something like changing the screen resolution, or maybe a bit more advanced, setting up a printer; or adding/removing users.
Oddly enough, it compiled for me on Ubuntu Edgy. He's on Feisty with the same kernel I've got, I sent him my made folder, and he couldn't get it to make install, and gets odd errors if he tries to make it. I'm wondering wtf the problem is (have been trying to help him via gaim).
Can't this all be done with a shell script? Next time you need to install a bunch of multimedia at once on install, write all the steps down and write a script that installs it for that distro, in a safe (read: not Automatix) manner. In fact, I plan on doing this next time I install a distro. If you want, contact me through e-mail or/. message, and I'll discuss this further with you.
Why it won't happen:
song.unlock(this_song)
song.play(this_song)
Someone edits the source file-
song.save(this_song)//Without DRM
No content provider will allow the DRM unlocker to be open-sourced, nor make it so that people can save an un-DRM'ed version of the content.
"They're geeky, but they don't know what to do with their geekdom,"
then...
"They take at face value whatever shows up at the top of the list as the best stuff."
Does "geeky" mean "1337 skr1p7 k1dd13" to these people? Because that's about what comes to mind when I read this.
I'm no lawyer, so someone help me out here.
This case is in Texas, therefore:
*This, at MOST, only applies to websites in Texas
*This may or may not set a precedent for other websites in other states
*Depending on case-specific issues, this may not set any precedence at all (see earlier post about defendant stupidity)
Is all that right?
That said, this is yet another ridiculous abuse of copyright. Copyright is not supposed to protect "your ability to generate ad revenue".
Libertarians suffer from the fiction of Corporate Personhood- they believe that corporations as well as individuals should have total freedom. The problem is, if you give corporations total freedom, individuals will end up with none. Were it not for this, I'd be a Libertarian.
The problem is they ALL take your freedoms away. The "content providers" are large corporations, not people. The "rights" of corporations are irrelevant next to the rights of individual people. Corporate personhood is a fiction, nothing more.
As someone else pointed out, pure determinism doesn't even exist in the physical sciences (quantum mechanics).
If you have 1 mol of uranium, half of it will decay after one half-life, yes.
But if you have 1 atom of uranium, it's impossible to know when that specific atom will decay.
Quantum mechanics disprove determinism.

Actually, it would be kinda funny if this was one of China's "government truths".

If excel won't run in WINE, try Crossover Office.

Mod parent up for general win.

Ok, now it's saying 9 of 4 (probably 10 of 4 after I make this post). What's the deal? This thread's the only one doing it. Anyone know what's up?

Try Krita.
Sysadmins should. And sysadmins are the people who would be interested in ACLs and making it where you can root certain tasks but not others.

Wine isn't a windows clone. It's a compatibility layer for Linux. ReactOS (note: page is down as I type this) is the windows clone.
