  1. Re:So here's the deal.. on India Hanging Up On 25 Million Cell Phones · · Score: 1

Let me also add here, the news is reporting that mobile carriers are going to offer a service to people with these phones to install a new IMEI number on their phone. No details were given (on what i saw) about how this would be done or who is offering this but they mentioned it would cost Rs 200 (~$5), so i don't see this as being a huge deal. Also it was only a couple of months ago that a ban was placed on all pre-paid mobile SIMs in the state of Kashmir since these were being used by many cross-border terrorists, the ban being imposed after repeated requests by the government to the carriers to strengthen the identification process (mentioned by Rexdude above). The carriers could have solved both these problems themselves without the centre having to step in but they did not because it would have cost them customers. We contend with laws every day that may limit our freedom of choice in small ways but make our society a safer place to live. Frankly i don't care that i can no longer buy a cheap Chinese knock-off phone when nokia sells handsets as cheap as Rs 1200 ($30). There's larger issues to worry about for all of us

  2. Anti-Gravity? on Does Antimatter Fall Up Or Down? · · Score: 1

So lets say it does fall up ... Does this mean that anti-matter is actually repelled by gravity? On a larger scale, wouldn't this cause anti-matter to be repelled by large clusters of matter (galaxies)?

This leads to another question, would anti-matter exert some sort of anti-gravity, in turn repelling normal matter? The mind boggles, especially since I left the boundaries of college physics when I started writing.

Hold on, waita minute, back it up. What does the FTC have to do with video game standards and protecting the children (o wont you please think of the children). I thought Take two was being investigated for backdating stock options

In short, his wits being quite gone, he hit upon the strangest notion that ever madman in this world hit upon, and that was that he fancied it was right and requisite, as well for the support of his own honour as for the service of his country, that he should make a knight-errant of himself, roaming the world over in full armour and on horseback in quest of adventures, and putting in practice himself all that he had read of as being the usual practices of knights-errant; righting every kind of wrong, and exposing himself to peril and danger from which, in the issue, he was to reap eternal renown and fame. -Don Quixote

He ... he quotes the Bible. Why is he quoting the bible? I mean ... if the Almighty God has sent Jack down to save us from the heathens, personally I think we're fucked I think the fact that jack seems to completely ignore games such as God of War (Which has the same rating as GTA, is MUCH more violent and has a much higher quality of nudity than the super secret unlockable) proves he doesnt really care about protecting the innocent children, take two was in the news a lot so going after them is big publicity. If theres no public outcry over god of war, theres no news coverage to be had from filing suit against them.

  13. They're both right on Sony Blackballs Blog Over PS3 Rumor · · Score: 5, Insightful

Both sides have a point here. Sony depends on the media to generate buzz about their products and releases, and so provides them with a lot of exclusives and insider information. The flip side of this is, they do not expect information on a service that is in development to become public before they are ready to announce themselves However, Kotaku did not receive this information from Sony. They only went to Sony to confirm it, this was not something sony provided to them and so they had no right to ask Kotaku not to run it. I wonder how it would have played out if KT had not been so diligent, and just reported the rumor without attempting to confirm it.

  17. Lets take a step back on Private Data Sold From Indian Call Center · · Score: 2, Interesting

So I've heard a lot of anti-India, anti-outsourcing, anti-brown people and so on. Lets go back and clear up a few basic points, the stuff that can be readily checked by spending 5 minutes on google.

Indian call center employees aren't being exploited, they don't go through every day burning with the knowledge that Chuck from Portland makes more money than they do. People need to stop looking at this from their perspective, in America you could barely eat on $5000 a year but in India, where the buying power of one dollar is much much higher than compared to the 1st world, that's enough to comfortably put you into the lower middle class income bracket. There are people who make less than $10 a month. So nobody's doing this out of some misdirected anger at the white oppressors making them slave at their terminals, many Call Centers are Indian companies, locally managed and recruiting from colleges and universities where they can get young, educated people who are doing this as their first job out of school, anything they make is good money.

On the issue of accents: Compared to the level of English the average American high school graduate can accomplish, any one of these people could run circles around you in a literary duel, if ever there was one. We speak with accents because we're not native English speakers, we learn hindi/benglai/punjabi/gujrati/tamil as well as English, and take on the speech patterns of the language spoken most often. So, if you choose to ridicule us because of our accents, know that the average Indian high schooler usually knows 3 languages (at least 2) and can probably understand a couple more, as compared to the American kid who's struggling with his one. And guess what? I bet Shakespeare had a pretty funny accent too ...

Third, and this point has been made already but its worth reiterating, this isn't a local Indian problem. I remember 4 separate instances of large scale personal data theft in the U.S over the last year, and I don't even pay that much attention so there's probably more. So, before you break out the stones, look back at the glass walls you're in.

  18. Not to defend them ... on Mod Chippers Ordered to Pay $9 Million in Fines · · Score: 0

OK, so not that I'm defending the fact that console manufacturers believe they own their product even after they've sold it to us, but the DMCA specifically bans the sale of any software that is designed to circumvent copyright protection, and this isn't the first ruling of it's kind. I do believe that once I've bought a game, I should be able to put it into any format I like and once I buy a console, I can spray paint it mod it gut the innards and make it a flower vase if I wanted to, and not be limited by what someone *might* do with such malicious programs as a weather widget. But, in this case the law is pretty clear on the issue and I don't see how the judge had any other choice. Also, this is light years from a "Major Victory" and I doubt this ruling will have much effect at all, but if they want to declare victory go right ahead, while you were filing pointless lawsuits $9 million worth of pirated games were downloaded on the internet (Statistics from the annual study I did in my brain by looking at no actual data)
