  4. A look at the OS X interface on Apple Open Sources OS X?/Jobs Permanent CEO · · Score: 2

For a look at the Mac OS X interface, check out the Mac OS X page. Interfaces on nearly every platform have become rather stale. I've been skeptical about Apple's ability to improve the situation. However, the new interface looks increadible! The animations seem actually helpful while still looking quite impressive.

I worry about the speed hit machines will take because of this, but who knows...when NeXT first appeared, the interface was more visually pleasing than anything else around. Half the interfaces today are some derivative of that look. Apple seems to be taking things one step cooler but have put a twist on it: instead of just looking cool, it also looks friendly and approachable.

    Check it out!

I used to use my Palm all the time. Lately, however, the problem has been keeping Palm info in sync with my other devices. Since I started using a cell phone, I keep most frequently called numbers there. My phone (Motorola StarTAC 7762) can't sync to my Palm, so I end up having two lists I have to keep up to date. My e-mail software (Microsoft Outlook Express for the Mac) can supposedly sync to the Palm, but I have yet to get it to work (the documentation is terrible and of no help).

I think some standards for synchronization of various devies (maybe of data formats) needs to happen. Ideally I'd like my palm to be on the net all the time and also work as my cell phone (the PDQ is too big). Maybe some day.

The tough thing is making a device small enough to make people bring it with them all the time, but with a large enough screen to be useful.

  8. Defining illness on Surgeon General Says 1/5 of Americans are Nuts · · Score: 1

This brings up a larger issue: how does one define mental illness (or even illness in general)? The standard response is that a mental illness is a condition of mental disturbance severe enough to interfere with normal activiites. This is highly subjective, however. If such a large portion of our society has what can be classified as a mental disorder, are we setting the threshold too low?

The real issue is the significance. One obvious question is whether or not the illness is treatable. This would have been a useful guideline in years past. After all, what is the point of diagnosing someone with an illness if a large percentage of the population is similarly afflicted and there is no treatment (aside from possible insurance/compensation issues)?

I believe some studies have shown improvement in mood ratings with certain anti-depressants in those who would not really qualify as having a depressive illness. If the normal state is treatable, does that make normality a disease state?

I'm stretching the point a bit here, because if you look at the actual numbers for specific disorders, the numbers are relatively low. That said, considerable changes that have gone on in the DSM (the text which defines the guidelines for diagnosing mental illness) over the years speak to the intangible quality that characterizes much of mental illness.

There's little point in announcing numbers. The question is what we intend to do wit this information as a society.

I've heard this before, but it doesn't really make sense to me. The rate of mutations (from misreplication, UV damage, etc.) should be proportional to the number of base pairs. Thus any inclusion of introns DNA wouldn't affect the chance that exons would bit hit by a mutation event.

Though I'm always glad to see someone fight M$, I haven't been as impressed with the progress of the Palm platform. Aside from the recent addition of wireless access (admittedly a big change), the OS and apps really haven't changed much. Some people say the simplicity is good, but I think the simplicity can be maintained with advances in the platform. It would be nice to see higher resolution, more bit depth, sound input (now on some Handspring models), etc.
