Is lies. Lying, falsehoods, untruthitudes. When did it become acceptable to lie about EVERYTHING ? Corporations, politicians and alot of regualr people -- just lye about everything. We're becoming a nation of pathological lyiers. In our culture it has become acceptable to lie about anything that would suit our interest.
In this article, Jim Alchen is just lying thru his teeth, no shame, nothing. The truth of course is, OS software stimulates competition by competeing with commercial software. It increases inovation in the same fashion. What he should have said is "This looks really bad for my wallet." This rant isn't about god, linux or money, its about being true to oneself. I hear more lies on TV in a day then I've told in the last 10 years. Really, how many times does the average person need to lie in a day / month / year ? How many times does a corporate executive lie in day? a politician?
I'm not talking about lies like, "no honey, y ou haven't gained weight." and I'm not saying I've never lied... what I am saying is the worship of money has corrupted us -- and the lying in this country disgusts me.
First of all, if this actually works, its whats called a "subliminal channel" in cryptography -- and thats not realy that interesting .
However, since you have to use the same website to send and recieve the message, it would be much eaisier to generates a random spam, and use the hash of that message to store your real text in a database (a dictionary or map) then when you come back with your e-mail to "decrypt" it could rehash the text and retrieve the message you typed in.
I have a theroy -- it sounds like alot of companies are hiring contractors to do this stuff... What if the company that handles the rebate gets to keep a portion of the pot they don't give back ?
It has to work like this : Company X hires company Y for rebate R... Company X cuts a check to company Y for C(r)*E(r) dollars where C(r) is the rebate ammount and E(r) is the expected return rate...
In all likelyhood -- the companies split whats left of the pot... this is VERY common in alot of industries -- HMO's let doctors keep half of their unused specalist budgets -- some movie studios split the remainder of their music budget with the music producer (known a couple music producers in my life).
If the rebate company had no stake in the rebate, its primary concern would be to execute the rebate efficently, not to save money.
I had a similiar problem with atlas -- I bought one of their modems and just flat out never recieved the 40$ rebate... I didn't bother pursuing it, but I did learn the only way to win is not to play the game.
Lemme tell you another side of the argument... at my university there is a guy who's crazy as anything... he's the real deal, wears a thick raincoat 24/7 (even in california weather), talks to himself, makes gestures at everybody, sometimes just strange gestures, othertimes threatning ones....he just does generally strange stuff... Riding his bicycle past people hackling, and he's always pointing at something...
If you accept my supposition that the guy is dangerous, the amusing part of the story is theres nothing that can be done about him. Being a crazy bastard isn't a crime -- we have to wait until he brings a gun to school...
My point is -- even when you've found "the wackos" there 'taint much that can be done about it!
I knew a fellow who was convicted for computer trespass on the evidence he had PGP'd on his drive. It did take them two years to crack it, but that wasn't very consoling to him in jail.
I heard this story on NPR yesterday, and could think only one thing...: Anytime a government agency is using propaganda to loby for a restriction of your rights -- something is seriously wrong.
That is quite true:) I've known several managers who had ba's in things like Theature Costume Design and Art History...
one very white girl I knew at my university was working on her PHD in "Native American Studies"... talk about worthless... a PHD would probably make her a regional manager at taco bell
I'm gonna completley disagree -- That article presented no EVIDENCE that computers were the cause of memory loss...
I think the researches noticed this trend and came up with a theroy they could shock people with so they would get in newspapers (and ultimatley get research grants I'm sure). Such broad statements as "Young people today are becoming stupid." are at BEST ageism and demonstrate a bias of some sort. A real scientist would have said, "Our studies apear to show that the people in their 20's are at higher risk for memory disorders then previous generations."
*IF* the hypothesis is true -- that younger people do have a higher incendence of memory disorders, then theres still absolutley no evidence that computers, pda's, or any other device is at fault. It could as easily be attribuatable to polution, acid rain, mad cow disease, the point being that they have no proof at all other then conjecture.
Hehe, your right but for the wrong reason. Those jobs attract the walking wounded because they are the only people who can't get better jobs. If you want good help you have to pay for it -- businessess know that, they just don't care.
I've got one better then that -- my "prosumer" audio sound card (M-Audio Delta 1010) has a "Master Mixer" that returns digital mix of every input and every output on the card, that can be routed to any (avaliable) output, sp/dif, or directly BACK to the computer for recording...
You could either record the signal directly with the mixer return, or, if there was some software that wouldn't allow that -- record directly off the sp/dif connector with another machine. -- all with no generational loss
Seriously -- at my HS (back in the day...) there were all sorts of retarded/disabled people (in addition to the staff which I was quite sure was retarded).
Lemme start off by saying I think that selling the things is just silly -- reminds me of alot of heated star trek debates I've overheard in the computer labs -- in the end, the answer dosen't matter because it was a stupid question to begin with. And it underlines the main problem with online gaming: Alot of people don't have a sense of fair play.
But after that -- I'm going to assume that things you could purchase from other players in the game will give you an advantadge over other players -- Sony needs to prevent players getting unfair advantadges (yes, buying items is an unfair advantadge) because it will harm gameplay if players can advance unfairly -- if something hurts gameplay it hurts their subscription base, and that hurts the bottom line. Its the same deal as blizzard and id's war against cheaters: If the game isn't fun, no one will play it.
On the other hand though -- people are willing to pay 10$ a month to play the game -- thats how Sony makes their $$... so its not really absurd to think that people would be willing to pay for items in the game -- I suspect sony is a bit "jealous" in the sense they don't want people profiting off their game.

If it was legal, moral and "legitimate" why didn't they disclose their business model to the schools and students they were tracking.
Spying is never a legitimate business model.

Disney promotes heavily around schools as well -- my mother is a 3rd grade teacher -- during the 101 dalmations blitz disney sent her an entire set of mcdonalds dalmations toys, some pc dalmation game, couple other goodies and the suggestion she distribute them to her class.
Unsustainable levels of work is absoutley right! (I'm a sysadmin) I worked 15 hours on tuesday (the 23rd), 11am - 2 am and was asked (at 2:00am) to be back in the office by 10am...
Our secratary worked 16 horus -- (8am - 12am) and was asked to be back at 8:00am the next morning!
All this because my boss decided to start working on TWO 50 page proposals just 3 days before they were due... -- Its his business to start them whenever he'd like, but I think it underlines a critical problem in the workplace -- complete lack of respect for the employees.
Its very poorly organized IMHO.
And the data structures are a joke -- most take an object as an argument and return an object... How many people write programs where you assoicate one object with another? -- don't you usually associate an object with a key or an index value ?
Unfourtantley, Orrin Hatch is too honest of a man to be taken seriously by congress. He's one of the few (only?) congressmen I have respect for.

My .02 cents
It is legal in california, I dunno about other states ... HMO's are about as close to pure evil as you can get .. save for religions founded on sci-f
