Alot of countries that HAVE computers don't have very recent ones... I had a Indian boss once, and he was telling me that in bombay the "current" computers were what the US was using one or two years ago... people would export junk computers from the us and sell them for a fortune.
Seriously though, demand for new computers will be driven by NEED for new computers... Need for new computers will be driven by uber cool applications:) How many computers did doom sell? How many videocards did quake3 sell?... mp3 for awhile was a killer app that a 486 couldn't run... we all got pentiums.
Thank GOD (or god substitute) someone else understands this... Alot of nazis read the nyquist limit thereom and think they know everything about digital audio... just ask someone for an oponion on 24/96 audio cards on #audioappz on effnet...
I do have to take issue with the statement "At and around 1/2 sampling freqency, the wave forms become basically nothing but square waves" though... I believe most sigma-delta (or is it delta-sigma? I can't remember...:) DAC's actually output a curve between any two points, and not just a voltage drop... if it was just a voltage drop, the sound would be hollow and metallic because of the harmonics created by that voltage drop. In effect you'd have 1/2 cycle of a square wave at each voltage drop, and if we recall our mechanics, a square wave is a sine wave with odd harmonics (3, 5, 9, etc...)... Ideally the curve would be sinusodial so it wouldn't create any harmonics.
Probably the best thing would be to stop downloading porn altogether:)

IANAL, but the DMCA assigns liability for circumventing access protection
devices... But read the subtext: "access protection devices" is some pretty words
for "damn near anything the author can make a machine to enforce." Lets say I
wanted to distribute DVDs that were only playable on saturdays... I make dvd
players that listen for the time broadcasts sent out by atomic clock stations, and
refuse to play discs marked for saturday useage on any other day. ANY limitation
which can be accomplished technologically is now backed by the full force of law.
Now, the time limitation is an excercise in absurdity, but, region encoding? Thats
absurd to, but the DMCA backs it. The DMCA is unconstitutional because its
assigning the power to make laws to corporations and individuals by enforcing
their notions of fair use. I believe I am the first person to make this arguments.
Whats worse, "circumvention" could be as simple as playing a DVD in a player
you bought in another region. In this sense, the law is too broad, making
commonsense actions like playing a DVD in a DVD player illegal (I believe
someone has already made this point).
I'm afraid you did -- I'm saying if microsoft didn't skip their taxes this year, thats 14$ less each person in the US would have had to pay to make the same ammount of tax money to the government.
I live in a small town with no industry and only service jobs (IE fastfood and retail), gov jobs and medical jobs... The town offered sears (and they accepted) 7 million in tax breaks + 5 million to build new facilities to stay after they "threatened" to close up shop. For a town with a little over 100,000 people, basically every person in town gave sears 120$ to stay and provide 30 or so minimum wage jobs. What a screw!
if you look at MS in the same light, their 4 billion in taxes... assuming a population of 280,000 in the US, is about 14$ per person. Money that had to be paid by other people to make up the slack... sickening when you think about it

Maybe I should have rephrased that, would you LIKE a right to compute? The constitution has been expanded 1000's of times, I point you towards the "right to privacy" which is mentioned no where in the constitution, but is a right nonetheless. At this point, I think you're being purposefully obtuse, so I will respond no further.
Explain how playing video games is a "privledge?"... videgames = art + computation... do you have a right to compute things? a right to look at art? I think most people believe that its your right to do something that dosen't harm other people...
I've been a UC student for more years then I'm willing to admit (UCR - www.ucr.edu), and I can tell you the primary focus of the college is not education, but profit. The UC system is deeply corrupted, and their primary concern is the marketshare they are loosing. The UC is all about control, they make you play their game at every opertunity. I paid 187$ just to park at UCR this year, 180$ for division one sports fee, 180$ for the student rec center I've never even BEEN to, 60$ for the student union, another 60$ to support student groups like gay & lesbian resource center, and african american resource center, and pacific isalander resource center etc etc etc... (all these are madatory), the list goes on and on. Just imagine what they are loosing with notes, they are. Next year they are thinking about charging 400$/ year for a mandatory student health program! Granted, no one takes the money home from school run businessess -- BUT -- they do use the money to increase their sphere of influence, which is what most UC administrators are drunk on -- power.
The sick part is that someone already really has... law prevents you from patenting something as obligatory as "obvious patents".. but you could patent a business model based on registering obvious patents! Priceline.com does this essentially, they pattented the "name your own price" business model but pricelines real business model is patent sueing. so patent your business model of suing people who sue for patents as a source of income , then sue anyone who does it;)
Immagine being able to buy a little plastic bubble of it for your kids "Super whacky space fungus"...
on the serious side, I don't think ths is the first time something like this has happened, I seem to recall a strain of yeast had mutated and was able to metabolize the plastic bags it was sold in. Yeast is pretty advanced stuff -- it can skip from aerobic to anerobic resperation (with oxygen / without oxygen) in a few minutes. (this is how beer produces yeast in a beer bottle with no oxygen)... if yeast can do that, who knows what fungus can do!
A lucid argument will go further then "calling Valenti a cocksucker." Mosty people already side against the MPAA because the MPAA sides against common sense. Law makers however, will dismiss us on the surface -- remember, they hold the real power.
theres never anything wrong with showing respect... The bigest problem with this country (the US) is all the small minds walking around thinking they know everything about anything and whats best for everyone

No one will buy a SDMI file.
No one will buy a SDMI Player.
No one will run SDMI software.
No one needs to crack SDMI ... The same content will be avaliable as cds.
Artists who release music only on SDMI will be hurt financially.
Hardware manufacturers who use "mp3 timebombs" will be liable in class action lawsuits.

thats very true :) but look atthe same incorrect arguments modded up to +5 on this discussion ... Leave digital audio to the professionals!

Whats missing from the article is the life expectancy of these organic compounds... I'm guessing its not too long ... anyone have a clue?
I think they do freebies for humanitarian interests ... get cancer or loose a limb or something then maybe you'd have a shot.

I remember reading somewhere that the cost in fuel per pound is about 10,000 USD. Gotta remember the escape velocity of earth is about 7 miles/s

With all this technology around and enough coke, I *MIGHT* just be able to take over the world!
This isn't consistent with our knowledge of this enemy
