The article said because this weighs multiples of the previous rovers. Also there is a lot more sensitive lab equipment inside, i would imagine

I dont agree with that. C and C++ set the foundation to modern computing in my opinion. COBOL and FORTRAN had their run, but they don't add anything to today's conversation IMHO

  3. C++ and Java make for good foundations on Google Engineer Decries Complexity of Java, C++ · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's been a long time since I've coded in a professional environment but I feel that having learned C++ you can learn any other language. It is complicated and verbose, but its extremely precise. Imagine having to learn how to manage memory with something like PHP. Actually -- because the new generation DOESNT LEARN C++ its why code is getting so sloppy now. There are easier languages sure, and using them can be fine, but if that's all you know, then you don't really know what your code is doing.

  4. Sure on New Material Sets Stage For All-Optical Computing · · Score: 1

I would consider 3 factors: "need", "current capacity", and "future capacity". "Need" is always increasing, at a rate to overtake "current capacity," therefore "future capacity" needs to always be developed. If they are predicting 5x faster performance at this early stage, it surely holds more. When BluRay was in it's infancy many people said 'why would i ever need 50GB, thats bigger than my HD'--- but low and behold, now 50gb doesn't seem like enough

  5. of course on New Material Sets Stage For All-Optical Computing · · Score: 1

Sure -- its for routers, a basic component of data transmission, and a bit is the most fundamental piece of data. We typically think in "BYTES", but that's really an OS abstraction right? At the lowest level of the network stack it makes sense to talk in bits -- anything above that can interpret it as it will (like a Byte, Word, Long.. etc)

Japan has fast internet but a number of other political and economic problems that are hindering its growth... as a counter-example -- look at Korea. They are like #1 or #2 in broadband adoption and they are thriving. Samsung overtook HP as the #1 tech company in revenue (multiple times ahead of Sony), Hyundai is one of the only car companies to have US growth last year, and ... They just won Gold in Ice Skating

  7. this is good in principle on NVIDIA Shows Off "Optimus" Switchable Graphics For Notebooks · · Score: 1

This is good in principle but i doubt nvidia can actually execute it successfully. Even in their chips now they have something called "powermizer" that is suppose to throttle the GPU up and down depending on load... the problem is when it is set to "low" it runs like garbage and it takes too long to change to high -- most likely after you needed it -- like to open a giant window, or drag windows. its garbage really.

  8. cold and ironic on India Ditches UN Climate Change Group · · Score: 1

This doesnt mean they are saying global warming is bad, or desirable. It just means they dont trust the UN panel. Whats funny though, is that they say they dont trust the IPCC because it doesnt do its own science, but they turn around and set up their own IPCC to review science themselves. And speaking of global warming, isn't this this coldest winter on record?

I agree. I'm not for blanket litigation. Just because someone does it and get in an accident doesnt mean my rights should be taken away also. I was texting on a Nokia like in 2001 when i had a 5 speed... its not so difficult. To be honest though, i liked T9 better than a full qwerty. You can do it mindlessly. But a qwerty i can see how it can be dangerous.
