But it is broke, their business model is in pieces and instead of trying to stick them back together into a modern system, they are changing the laws in order to keep their pockets padded.
Want to know something twisted? Here in Canada, you can NOT get copyright protection on software, but due to ACTA, we must still respect the copyright of software from other countries!!!
Basically, if I and someone from the US make a program each (completely different), he and anyone else in the world, can copy mine, but I can't copy his!
As far as I'm concerned, the right to free speach allows you to say what you want, but not where you want. You have every right to post what-ever the hell you want on your blog, a website, a forum, etc. But when you start filling my private inbox with your useless bullcrap, that's when you've gone too far.
If someone stands in the street telling people the world is ending, fine, what-ever. Now if they walk into your living room and do the same thing, sighting free speech, I'm sure you will still call the cops!
...their right to speak does not obligate you to listen.
By sending their speech directly into my private inbox, they are in a way forcing me to listen, since I have to trudge through their subject lines in order to delete them.
Or make one application that allows other programs to spawn windows inside of it. Each inner-window would have a background process thus not an *application* and the outer-window would then become you single-application window manager.
I personally hope that most windows users end up with this limited version of windows. It will mean that stupid users will only be *able* to have a maximum of 2 trojans running before they are forced to clean their machine!
I think this is the best thing to happen to spam servers in a long time.
Something a lot of people might not realise it that your CS vs FOSS google success will vary greatly depending on the *type* of software you are troubleshooting.
When it comes to desktop software (office, photoshop, windows, etc), you will find a lot of forums about the Closed Source stuff. The problem (as you've no doubt seen), is when trying to find answers regarding closed source *server* software (MS-SQL, windows server, etc). FOSS software on the other hand tends to have good forums for BOTH types of software (desktop/server).
If you are mainly dealing with desktop software, you will find the support is about the same, but for server side stuff you are going to smash a hole in the wall with your head if you are using Closed Source software.
Agreed. The *only* time a company should even consider using paid tech-support is if the problem is on a server (critical), or affecting a large number of systems. Otherwise, the easiest fix (Closed Source or FOSS) is to simply re-image the machine.
Have you ever worked somewhere that has a "soothing" water fountains (one that sits on a table)? If you haven't, you have no idea what you are missing. They have no repetitive pattern and offer that *perfect* level of noise that simply multiplies productivity.
I usually work with music (anything but country), but if I find myself near a water fountain, the music goes off.
If you meant fluorescent, then you have a serious point. Anyone who expects coders to work under those abominations of flickering artificial light is out of their bloody minds! Sunlight is also bad, not because I'm nocturnal (which I am), but because it causes a LOT more glare than anything else I have encountered.
Give me bulbs (CFL's are fine for me) or give me unemployment!
A company only needs to pay royalties if a certain number of people are listening to the music (usually 4). This normally applies to a radio playing of the speaker system (or even a boombox). However, if you are listening to something on headphones, then you are the only one listening to the music. Even if lots of people are doing that, they are all (technically) listening to a separate audio feed. So unless you are using headphone spliters, then I wouldn't worry about it.
Some people have multiple personality disorder, I have duplicate personality disorder. I'll be trying to work and have my own internal voice going over problems in 10 different projects. Music gives those other voices something to listen to while my conciousness gets some real work done.
Sorry, my bad, I did mean patents.
Some people have mailboxes on their porches and mail slots in their doors you know.
If you started getting 300 envelopes stuffed full of fliers shoved through your front door at all hours of the day, I'm sure you'd be suing somebody!
what part of "simply re-image the machine" did you not understand??? All your employees information should be stored on the server.
Only on slashdot would someone actually check that...
Lucky you, I got full-blown whiplash and a broken rib!
I can't wait for these to become popular. Just walk into a big room and drop an IR strobe light on the table!

We can only hope!
If I could find the little buggers, they'd be asking ME for their TEETH back!!!

And you can't do this in a regular classroom...?
The only real disadvantage is test taking, and most online colleges & universities have rooms just for online students to take tests in.
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
When's the last time you saw ANY computer manufactures stand up to MS in any way?!?

Not to mention the 2* trojans running in the background.
* #3 couldn't install because the installer could not launch it!

Neon lighting??? Where the hell do you work?

Maybe he's refering to the "window rollup" (double-click the titlebar) that pretty much any linux machine does natively...

That really doesn't help any of us...
Or just hold the ctrl key and scroll your mouse up a few dozen notches...
