Nearly all smartphones have both, which makes me wonder why you mentioned the iPhone. Fanboy, much? :) Just a fanboi of my free-with-plan Nokia 6288. I've _never_ paid for a cellphone, I only take the freebies.

In Israel it costs money and you either loose the place you were in line outside the consulate or loose your phone. That place in line can cost a few hours from what I've been told. I do not know if the money goes to the consulate or not, because as I understand it (I might be wrong about this detail but I can check) the dropoff place is across the street, therefore presumably not under consulate control.

Ahh.. policy.. The bureaucratic form of "I was only following orders" I agree - Nazi germany was the first thing I thought of when I heard about people not being allowed to use their PDAs. I will give you a better analogy. The local US embassy confiscates cellphones. Apparently there is a sign at the door that you can leave the phone at a drop-off point across the street for the equivalent of $3 US. My wife who went to the embassy to pick up some papers had to leave her place in line (after over an hour in line outside the building) and hide her phone in the bushes because she didn't have the cash on her.

My question is: what if you are using it to communicate with other members of your party in the park? Suppose you have a copy of the park map on it?

Smartphones/PDAs are not just used for business, after all. The iPhone has a media player and a camera. What if you are making a home video of your family enjoying the amusement park?

How about here, now, you decide to be just "twitter" and post useful comments from only one account. Your karma will skyrocket, especially since you are pretty well known now.

The really annoying thing is, it would probably be great for writing with a stylus, but that does not (last I checked) work on an iPhone. The last idiot who flicked me the iFinger got it cut off and now I have the perfect stylus. I had to drive a nail through the bone to keep it straight, but once the blood dried up there is almost no smell at all.

The article isn't terribly specific about which nitrogen compounds react to the spray, only providing a couple of examples. If I worked in my garden 5 days before a flight, am I going to get hazed by TSA because I didn't eliminate every last speck of fertilizer from my clothes? If you intend to get on another plane smelling like fertilizer again, I swear on everything holy that I will beat you under the flotation device again. But this time I won't let them put the oxygen mask on you.

We're more likely to progress long-term by investing in genuinely novel solutions to problems, even if they remain unmanned for the foreseeable future - and the wealth of knowledge about our solar system that we'll have gained from such robotic space probes will be invaluable when we do finally get round to those real attempts at colonisation... Those novel situations to problems will not arise without the associated problems. Thus, solving the problems of human spaceflight will lead to solutions that will work here on earth. Just think about the starving villagers in Myanmar, drowning in their own feces with their homes under standing water. Now imagine a scenario where the US could send over machines that convert the shit to food. A manned Mars mission would prioritize the development of such a machine. And it's not as far fetched as it sounds. Ask any lab rat at your university how much nutrients remain in mammal feces.
