Red Flag Linux is: 1) Not American 2) Not German 3) A mature, well developed product that maintains a necessary independence from foreign (specifically Western) influence.
The Chinese support is important, too. Don't forget that China is Russia's neighbor, they interact as much as you may interact with (I suppose that you are American) Canadians and Mexicans.
FC6 was what? Two years ago? Don't get me started on the issues I had with kubuntu 7.04 man...
I know that Ubuntu isn't perfect, but Fedora is just too bleeding edge for a production environment in my opinion. Ideally I would go with Debian but *buntu packages the video drivers that I need better.
The problem for ARM: lacking support from Microsoft for Windows; the applications it runs for the PC have to do so under Linux.
Not a problem for everyone. I've already got an ARM-based Linux running on a NSLU32 NAS head - 32Mb RAM, 32 Mb flash. If I could get a lightweight laptop with a modern ARM chip, I would be over the moon.
Exactly, my first thought is that it sounds like a feature!
Because only in the Russian language are there enough curse words to accurately describe yum breaking X.org, the video drivers, and itself after downloading 450 MB of updates because you didn't update in two weeks.
That was FC6, and F7 would not install on my Inspiron (driving me to Kubuntu). I love Fedora to death, but it is _not_ for your daily driver! Unless you happen to speak a language where every tangible noun can be made into a curse word. Pizdyetz!
You do, of course, realise that the user with the name "kdawson (3715)" and the user id 1344097 is not the same as the user (and editor) with the name "kdawson" and the user id 3715...
Nice catch! I was fooled, to tell you the truth. I happen to know that/. editors do go through the comments to the stories they post, usually to mod down posts with the words "goatse" or "nigger" in them.
Neither of those work with Hebrew documents. But I appreciate the try.
Note that I have _donated_ to both ie4linux and to wine in the past, even though I am not currently using their software nor ever had a persisting need for it. But I think that the effort is very important.
Also i don't think you would be able to easily test with a "logic" screwdriver what was connected anyway. I don't know the usb handshaking, but if the default state is high impedance then they others will still look disconnected.
Mac OS X doesn't run natively on all PCs, so Microsoft doesn't have anything to be afraid of. Plus Microsoft has software already developed for the Mac, so they could still make money even if Macs dominate PC sales.
Microsoft doesn't have that with Ubuntu, not only does it run on the same hardware as Windows, but it's being offered as an alternative to Windows by a major player in the PC market.
Good, I hope that MS Office becomes available on Linux. I don't particularly like it, but it is better than Open Office, and it is compatible with all the crap documents my university slings about.
But their first step will likely be IE on Linux. That way these fucking IE-only websites can continue to exist.
USB hole? Would it not be a standard USB receptacle? I would imagine that they would use mass-produced USB receptacles that would have all the pins, but that the unneeded pins just would not be connected to anything.
Now a lot of people would say this is splitting hairs, saying that since you can't run OSX apps on a "free" system, you can't say the OS in "free". It's a valid objection. However, I still think it's noteworthy that code for the kernel and lots of other stuff is available to developer to look at and copy.
I assume that this kernel could run any OS-X app, including Photoshop? That means that the code is out there, and free, to run any OS-X app, including photoshop? Why can't the good folks at Novell or Canonical incorporate this into their Linux distros and get Photoshop supported _natively_ on those platforms? Or better yet, I'm sure that Greg Kroah-Hartman could do it and get it directly in the kernel.
If the government agencies and large corporations already knew everything that Google Latitude reveals, and they do, then I didn't lose any privacy. Neither did any of you. You can't lose what you didn't have.
I don't care about the government knowing about my secret love affairs. I don't want my wife knowing, though.

Well, Duh, it's Red. :D
Actually, I thought that they would have gone with either Red Flag Linux or the super-stable backbone of free Linux: Debian.

Perhaps you could elaborate? Many of us do difficult jobs and still know what year it is.
See that big shiny thing outside your window that keeps track of days and months and years? People in their parent's basement don't have that luxury.
On Friday the 13th, every second is a leap second. BOO!
...that I really feel I missed:
$ perl -e 'print scalar localtime(8675309),"\n";'

They only work for AC anyway.
Alright, I'll turn it down just after this one song...
(It's tough living this close to Gaza. First the Qassams, now this guy!)
Thanks.
That is why I have bullet proof glass and meter-thick walls, just in case you were wondering.

Why is this always seen as a battle between linux and Microsoft? Who said that we 'have to beat Microsoft'?
This guy did:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1
I see, thanks. Is there any effort to reverse engineer it?

All the upcoming ***tops below $250 will run linux, I bet.
Asstops? You are far ahead of the curve on that one, methinks.
Hold on, I'm working on tin foil case for my cell phone!
Doesn't work, I already asked:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1115609&cid=26724567
But the people who would use this probably don't care about these things anyway. Or if they do, they'll turn off their phone.
And Windows users generally don't care about malware. That does not mean that it is not harming them.
I think that you are confusing "not caring" with "ignorance".
I played with it on my blackberry, its pretty cool.
I've got to get me one of those. My Nokia doesn't have a large enough screen for porno-on-the-go.
