  2. More Elegant Approach on NIH Confirms Protocol To Reverse Type 1 Diabetes · · Score: 1

The method reported in Islet Recovery and Reversal of Murine Type 1 Diabetes in the Absence of Any Infused Spleen Cell Contribution may work but at what cost. It requires immune system suppressing drugs and cells from a foreign donor. I suspect that immunoconjugates that prevent the attack of islet cells will be used in conjunction with adult stem cells from the diabetic individual that have been differentiated into the appropriate replacement tissue.

  3. Put it on You Tube on "Revenge of the Nerds" Remake Cancelled · · Score: 1

Whenever a movie gets scrapped after some photography has been completed, they should do a rough edit and put it on You Tube. They could even make a contest out of editing it.

  4. link to the paper on Using Enzymes To Counter Cancer Growth · · Score: 1

If slashdot was a technical crowd that likes highly detailed information, I would recommend that whenever a post is related to a publication in a peer reviewed scientific journal, there should be a link to it and the title should be stated. In this case, the Queen of Lyase recently published a paper called Sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase potentiates apoptosis via p53- and p38-dependent pathways and is down-regulated in colon cancer in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, or PNAS for short. It deals with cancer epigenetics, which will be one of the most important emerging areas of oncological research. Scientists once thought that cancer was caused by a critical mass of mutations, but now many of them realize that errant epigentic marks such as histone acetylation and cytosine methylation can be equal contributors to cancer. Epigentic marks do this by turning off tumor suppressor genes or activating oncogenes. Several histone deacetylase inhibitors are currently in human clinical trials. Having some nice primary source material is great for us technical folks.

  5. REU experience on Tech Jobs For a Student? · · Score: 1

Go to college and get paid several thousand dollars to do a Research Experience for Undergraduates program each summer. Or do a coop program with a tech company. If you go the REU route, you can try a different type of research in a different location each summer. If only there were more students like you in the United States. I find that most of my students are anything but motivated. Despite what the REU application forms say, they sometimes do take people after their freshman year, especially in the less exotic locations like Oklahoma, Kansas, and upstate New York. The culture of academic work is very different from industry work. You should get a feel for both.

Perhaps there should have been a codefendant in this trial. We, the United States, have a funny way of arming dictators and encouraging them then cutting and running.

  7. Evolution of Borat on Mahir To Borat, I Sue You! · · Score: 1

The Borat of 1994 may not be the same one that we know and love today. Cohen may have pulled a few tricks from Mahir over the years. At the very beginning of the new movie, which is available on YouTube, Borat clearly says "I like sex." and plays pingpong. These are two distinctly Mahir activities. Just because a car company was around for years does not mean it did not rip off some design features from another company. Part of Borat, the new part, may have developed in response to the Mahir craze.

Mad props to this guy for the successful self promotion. This technology really blurs the line between molecular biology and nanotechnology. Because the NIH and NSF have a massive woody for Nanotechnology at the moment, people must rebrand their science as such even if a different name like protein engineering would be more accurate. But they are using light too? This has been done before nano was a trendy word.

Small interfering RNA has been used in human clinical trials as a very safe way to treat age related macular degneration.

  10. WoW themed patches on Trial For The Male Pill Shows No Side-effects · · Score: 1
Can I get custom patches printed with my WoW character on them? I wonder if they can make transparent background patches so it would look like I have a really cool tattoo, perhaps of an elf or a dwarf or a battle axe. Perhaps posessive girlfriends will want custom patches that have Property of hernamehere on them. Color coded patches would be great too.
    • Blue if you are single.
    • Green if you are in a relationship.
    • Neon green if you are in a relationship with a lusty nerdess.
    • Rainbow if you are gay.
    • Yellow if you are a swinger.
On a more serious note, This development should seriously empower women. I know too many girls that have got pregnant during college and had to drop out. A friend of mine from highschool has three kids with three different guys. Perhaps some women will prefer to date guys that wear the patch regularly. Of course, then fake patches will show up.
