Sounds like good names to be used in a D&D game! I've always liked the way Intel code names their processors, as I was born and raised in Tillamook, which had it's own Mobile Processor. Nehalem, is in fact another city in Tillamook County, Oregon. Some of you might remember Nehalem's prior claim to fame was an Everclear song on their breakthrough album Sparkle and Fade, entitled simply 'Nehalem'.
So, some enterprising group of users will write a linux binary...
But when the choice comes down to Microsoft or Adobe... Hmmmm, neither one thank you. But Flash at least is a necessary evil at times. Nothing to get worked up about.
But this irrational hatred of Silverlight is a bit beyond me. Big fucking deal, at least it's attempting to become a competitor of Adobe Flash. Competition spurs innovation and all that jazz.
Personally I could care less what format the library is using for their interactive menus on their website. Just as long as the Library Of Congress does what they do best, be the de facto national library with one of the greatest collections of print the world has thus far seen.
Remaking myloc.gov in silverlight doesn't bother me as long as they don't lock out non-silverlight enabled browsers. I agree, and I must say the summary starts off somewhat misleading. The website will use MS-Flash, the collections aren't going to be locked into any proprietary MS format.
Microsoft Silverlight, a graphical browser plug-in, will help power the library's new Web site, www.myloc.gov, where users will be able to access and personalize interactive materials. Really what's one proprietary format over another, granted Silverlight seems to be Windows only. Still the meat and potatoes of what the library does is the same old same old.
vista sp1 breaks programs left and right even when they are actually compatible. If you look at the list from the article yesterday, it was a very small number of programs. A dozen or so? And all the companies had been notified in advance. And as I said yesterday, it's been long over due that Microsoft stopped hard coding little fixes and work arounds for improperly coded 1st and 3rd party software.
Sad that you need to expend so much effort just to make products NOT work. I'm not talking about DRM or file formats, but I will say Microsoft has taken efforts over the years to ensure their products as well as others do work, take a look at the Win2k source code overview, granted that is Win2k but I don't think the development environment really would of changed all that drastically from then to now.
Easy. Design device so that gestures are trainable. I will train every device I own the same way.... But what about the newbies and novices of the world? Who the very concept of gestures would be foreign?
multitouch is a logical extension/derivative of the trackpad Of that I do concur, however if the market was to fragment in such away to hurt adoption, would it really be that bad to use a well designed track pad with some wheels for zooming and/or scrolling? I know gestures have been gaining momentum over the years (I personally don't care much for them) and it saves space and what have you on smaller consumer electronics devices, but I prefer tactical feed back from my hardware when navigating or performing input.
Well, for one thing, according to TFA, "Reiser was accepted at the University of California at Berkeley at age 14". That doesn't necessarily mean he has an IQ of 140 or higher.
This line of thinking perpetuates the two party duopoly. Perhaps it does but until we actually get some measures in place that would allow the American will to be shown in elections, I'm going to ensure my vote remains effective by voting for viable candidates.
You are supposed to vote for the candidate you wish to win That's great, but you must think of the greater good. Sure you may want Nader to win. But he won't. Why not place your vote with someone who actually has a chance of winning and might actually do some good for the people.
It's that logic that keeps Independents from winning in the first place. It's reality that keeps them from winning, it's about dollars and connections. And the only reason it is that way is because, in general, the American public is far to ignorant, self absorbed and lazy to elect any meaningful leaders.
i'm still voting for him if they let him on the ballot, sorry. otherwise i prob just wont vote. really between hillary, obama, and mcain im kinda indifferent, i wouldn't really mind either on of them compared to bush. Then you are voting with your heart, not your mind. The fact of the matter is there's a better chance of snow in hell then Nader winning the presidency. And I like the guy. But the fact remains, change is going to be incremental. So why not vote for someone who actually has a chance of winning and has a few ideas you agree with? As opposed to voting the guy you agree with much more, but ain't gonna win.
And what if you don't happen to think the dem's are the lesser evil? Then vote republican, but don't delude yourself into thinking a vote for Nader or any of those fringe candidates means anything.
Granted Nader is an independent, I do think the major problem with any candidate that isn't of the two major parties is the fact they try and win the presidency. As opposed to getting mayors, councilmen, congressmen, etc., etc.. Into office. 3rd party/independent candidates are simply fail waiting to happen without a solid base.
Of course it's not THE twinkie defense but it's just another spin on it, he has these bizarre psychological conditions preventing him from realizing his behavior is highly questionable. And the only reason I bring it up, is because this seems like a defense of desperation, much like claiming twinkies and coca cola turned Dan White into a murderer.
if nader runs If Nader runs, don't waste your vote on him. He doesn't have a shot and those votes are better off with the lesser of two evils, the democrats.
Ehm, you also have to get back down, so that is 240ms minimum... Still couldn't this provide some measure of redundancy in cases where the hard lines are damaged or taking down for whatever reason, like we recently saw in the middle east?
The AppleTV is calling... are you there? Oh I'm here, I don't particularly care for Apple hardware. I like my commodity x86 parts, and yes Apple TV is a CE device, however it just feeds the beast. Personal issues aside, 720p... You're kidding right? I don't even run my desktop any less than 1024p (vertical lines), and that is very very low end by todays standards. And since the x86 machine I just put together off newegg today came with on board 8 channel sound, not to mention my 35 dollar Wal-Mart DVD/DivX player has Dolby support (in regards to your 5.1 comment), yeah I'm not to impressed.
on my big screen HDTV. You nailed the issue right there, HD content isn't worth the effort on anything less than 42" and even then it's very questionable as to whether there is a difference. But that's in a home environment, it's still maturing. To inject 400million into such a market seems a bit absurd to me, but like I said let Sony blow their wad. I'll wait for HD content to become more than premium novelty content.
My take is that shareholder lawsuits are never a given in this country. I'm not very involved in issues related to high finance, but this strikes me as similar to when SuperValu tried to buy out Boise, ID based Albertsons LLC, a group of share holders thought they had gotten an unfair offer the board had accepted (yes kind of opposite of the issue at hand), however if memory servers the lawsuit didn't succeed in preventing the buyout. Even with a groundswell of local support (including Idaho based investors) wishing to keep the company instate and/or increase the gain to shareholders. So I guess I am kinda questioning the effectiveness of such a suit as the (apparently minority) Yahoo shareholders are bringing to the table.
I don't even think the market is ready for HD, we barely have downloads that offer DVD quality. The hardware feels a bit immature in my opinion, with perhaps the exception of the PS3. However my personal experiance with stand alone players comes to one thought, "Why the fuck am I waiting for my movie player to boot up?"
Now call me when we have the bandwidth to stream HD, and we're not paying a premium for discs and when we all have large screen hi def tvs that actually can utilized the enhanced resolution.
Hahah I had some of those, they were in a bin outside of my local radio shack for free.
Such as found on the front page, http://www.loc.gov/ (homepage/swf/main.swf)

I'm glad to see AMD based projects like this, as they have certainly took a hit in the HPC space as of late.
As an incidental note, Blinder mentioned theories that elements of diet could worsen existing mood swings.
Obviously not the corner stone of the case defense presented, but the effects of eating junk food were mentioned.

Also why is he constantly referred to as a genius?
i.e. "an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, music, etc."
Granted I couldn't design and implement my own file system, but I hardly think that deserves the label 'genius'.
The old Twinkie Defense upgraded for the year 2000.
