Mon Mothma was the head of the whole freaking rebellion, and she's female. Cool strong leader character, too. If she had only been more developed, she might've been as cool Delenn from B5.
I think it's amusing that people (including myself) think Empire ruled in large part because of its downbeat ending. But think about TPM..
It's in a way even more complex than Empire... It has a FALSE happy ending! I mean, its happy ending is entirely superficial. If you really think about what happened in the movie, Anakin's survival, winning the war.. both of those "happy ending" itmes are actually BAD!
And anyone else notice that the end credits music ends differently from the endings in all three other movies?
- By no email do they mean Burger King isn't providing email accounts? Or can you not even use web-based email?
- I think they're going to have a hell of a time trying to enforce the no porn rule. Filtering software is all far from perfect... Although at least they won't have the same 1st amendment problems as libraries do. "Our software doesn't let you look at the N.O.W. homepage? Well, tough."
This non-partisan site has lots of detailed info on all the candidates and so forth, including issues responses and recent voting history. That is, if they've been a Congressman, it lists how they voted on various bills.. very good solid data. (Could use more info on those bills, though.)
Anyway, this is the quickest way to check out tons of solid facts about various candidates.
Yes, but it wasn't because they were watching movies on TV (like we do now w/ VCRs, etc.), it was because television had its own programming to compete with going to the movies.
Well, in a sense they were. Pre-TV movies contained many serials, newreels, and the like, which were genres that TV provided a better home for. So people did basically start watching those movies on TV. What happened then was that the movie business changed to play on their strength: large screen and undivided attention.
I think a similar thing will happen with music, whereby CDs will change to reflect the digital market. For instance, people will much more likely want to buy one-hit wonders online than on expensive singles, but might still like well-organized concept albums that work well as a unit.
Instead of just ranting here about it, we should all write letters to our Congressmen. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the only real thing we can do in a situation like this (other than vote resposibly).
Civil disobedience should always be a last resort, because if everyone performs civil disobedience at the first sign of a law they don't like, there would be no point to having laws!
Everyone should take a look at that Wave to Disk program in the parent to this msg! I'm sure something like this would work for SDMI. As long as there's a player on the computer, someone could easily write a program that pretends it's a sound driver, and save the resulting digital signal to disk. Thus, an SDMI piece could be converted to MP3, albeit only in real time.
This is all true except for the television bit. The movie industry DID take an enormous hit from television. Before TV, peole in the US watched on average a movie a week. Nowadays, they watch several movies a year.
You could detect it after the fact; it doesn't matter. All you have to do is write it into the license agreement that if you play MP3s, you don't have the right to use the APIs, so if you do, they you can get sued.
NATO SAYS they don't want to hurt people, but they've hurt plenty of people already. Is it right to kill innocent civilians to save the lives of other innocent civilians? That's not necessarily true.
This "sneaking technology" thing is absurd to begin with. I seriously doubt that Sony make the Playstation in order to get some kind of foothold for an invasion. IIRC, Sony was originally even working with Nintendo on a CD-based game console until Nintendo backed out, but Sony wanted to go ahead with it anyway and try competing with Nintendo. They settled on CD-ROM for cost and convenience reasons, almonst certainly not so they could upgrade to DVD and turn the console into a home entertainment center in the future.
I was reading one of the "related articles" on that story http://www.news.com/ News/Item/0,4,0-23872,00.html?st.ne.ni.rel, and one Judge Gwin says that software is not language like cooking recipes, instructions, and manuals, because the software is "purely functional" and "actually performs the function".
HELLO?! Has he ever seen a floppy disk encrypt anything? No! It takes a COMPUTER to do that!
Software is by definition INSTRUCTIONS for the processor. In fact, the word "instruction" is used throughout computer terminology!
He should be banning the export of computers for being able to encrypt. (Sadly, that's more than just sarcastic: we already do that to a certain extent with supercomputers.)
I'm a big science fiction fan who also loves Star Wars, and also think it's more than mere entertainment. It is simply a different form of fiction.. I don't think Star Wars qualifies so much as science fiction as it does space fantasy.
But the thing is.. Why is it BAD just because it isn't science fiction? Sure, it IS a Cowboy and Indians adventure movie.. but why is it "just" that? Star Wars has garnered a mythical value in our modern culture, and I think its power and value are something to be appreciated.
I agree analog capture wouldn't be acceptible, but say you have a "secure" player. It DOES, however, have to actually send the signals to the sound card at some point, though, right? Couldn't someone just write a daemon of some sort to capture those signals en route to the sound card? I don't know enough about this sort of thing to know if this is actually feasible. Anyone?
I think the heart of this Hellmouth series is hardly Katz' writing. Indeed, Katz has been writing as little as possible. What he has said has mostly been superficial, but it's meant to be, because that's not the POINT of these articles.
The hundreds of posts that accompany each of these articles is the point of these articles. Katz is merely sparking a community forum.
You're missing the entire point. I'm a huge hard s.f. fan myself, and I think complaining about lack of science in Star Wars is like complaining about lack of science in the Lord of the Rings.
Star Wars is "space fantasy" if anything.. Its purpose is to be rousing epic with cool stuff, not to explore scientific issues.
>>You should be on the lookout for a Caesar if you want to draw parallels Gee, what did Caeser do? Overreach his military power and spread his standing army out all over the map? Any government we know doing that? Nah....:P
>>How can I allow myself to be subjected to anything that is known to carry a cancer risk? In that case, we should ban sun-roofs in cars.. After all, they subject us to cosmic rays which increase our chances of getting cancer!
I doubt it. From the look of the trailers, Phantom looks to me more like Jedi than Empire. It seems to have a lot of action with some character stuff, as opposed to the enormous focus on character in Empire.
I have to say I'm REEEEEEALLY looking forward to eps 2 and 3, which I think will have some truly great story-telling (in addition to even better fx). I mean, as we all know, Episode 3 will end on a down-note (Vader's "birth").. Even Empire's sad ending was false because we knew Jedi was coming along.. But this will be a REAL sad ending!
It's choral music, not opera music. Big difference. I'm not a fan of opera music, but I love choral stuff. Of course, you have the right to dislike BOTH types of music, as you evidently do, and I have absolutely no problem with that.
I agree wholeheartedly. The Star Wars music is great, but no small part of its greatness comes from the the association with the subject matter.
When I listen to my Star Wars music, my mind just flows over to the Star Wars Universe again. Without the associations, the music won't be as powerful. This is another reason I'll be waiting till after I see the movie to buy the soundtrack. (Or better yet.. I'll order the sountrack to time its arrival with the day after I see the movie...)

On that note, I highly recommend Project Vote Smart < http://www.vote-smart.org/>.

EXACTLY!
I can just imagine the day when OCR becomes reliable enough to read books of code... then books will be software!
Book banning will be legal again!

Who cares if it's not hard s.f.?

There's a wonderful Pulp song that is incredibly relevant to this situation.
"Mis-shapes" from their "Different Class" album.
The lyrics:

I think "choral music" is by definition music where the chorus plays a big part, which Duel of the Fates certainly is, no?
Can you elaborate on this mutiny? What exactly happened?
