  5. Tenure Track to Blame on Are Academic Journals Obsolete? · · Score: 1

Journals exist for one reason and one reason only: assistant professors and graduate students are in a constant competitor to publish papers in order to earn tenure and notoriety. This results in academic members essentially giving their work away for free to journals who in turn make piles of money off of it. Fix the tenure track system and paper journals will disappear in place of free to view online ones.

I'm not against study groups, if you these kids were just prepping for a test, I doubt anyone would have a problem. Teaching/Learning with others before a big test is important, but that's not what this is about. My understanding of this situation based on the administrations reaction and the people involved messages, is that these kids created a homework swapping group posing as a study group. Granted you could argue that by sharing homework they were just 'preparing' for tests, but if you believe that then I've got a bridge to sell you.

You obviously have a very jaded view of professors. I'm sorry, mine were actually teachers. You make it sound like the kids were were helping each other one-on-one... with 150 people? I'm sure each of that got exclusive private team with one another... or they all just cheated... definitely one of those two though. I'll let common sense decide.

Teach by any means? So showing you the answer without doing any work is teaching? Wow....

  10. It's Definitely Cheating on Student Faces Expulsion for Facebook Study Group · · Score: 1

Have any of you ever been to college? The academic integrity polices are pretty strict. There's a huge difference between a study group of 5 people and a study group of 150 people. Just imagine organizing a study group of 150 students at the library and see if anyone notices. In fact, some courses ban study groups of even 5 people, saying you have a question about homework you have to ask the professor or TA.

It's not about finding the answer online, if it was a test in searching the web for every answer, everyone would get an A. The system's not broken, student's are often told they cannot discuss homework questions with other students. What's broken is the integrity and honesty of university students.

  12. I teach a course on the subject on Software Dev Cycle As Part of CS Curriculum? · · Score: 1

Many colleges, Rutgers included (where I work), offer courses on the Software Engineering. The problem is that very few (if any) schools make the course required. Making the course required could go a long way to helping future software developers. I, myself, never took the course and was floored when I went into the software world when I realized I knew nothing about professional software development beyond the coding/theory.

  13. Plays for Sure - Ha! on MSN Music Purchases Not Compatible with Zune · · Score: 1

This is disturbing on so many levels. At the very least companies that have made PlaysForSure plays like Creative/SanDisk should sue saying Microsoft has deserted them. Essentially Microsoft has convinced them all to sign up with their proprietary format claiming its the way of the future only to abandon them and come out with an entirely different format for their own private player leaving them in the dark. As for customers, thats even scarier. I remember hearing that the Zune didn't play PlaysForSure previously only to think "God I hope thats a joke" but now I pity anyone who bought previous players as I do the company that made them. This along with lack of online purchasing through the player doesn't lead me to think the Zune is going to have a successful launch.

Good point, I was thinking of the 7200 rpm drive which is only available in the 17" model. The 3gigs are available in all three. Side Note: Is it a tad odd they lowered the harddrive speeds to 4200 rpm in order to increase size? Granted 5400 rpm is still the default, but its odd that the 15" is now available 4200/5400 rpm models whereas previously it was available with 5400/7200 rpm models.
