It's like saying you might as well keep your money in a wet paper sack as opposed to a guarded bank vault in an FDIC insured institution, because they both can be comprimised. After all, you wouldn't want to have a false sense of security!
Now yes, the difference between Chrome/Firefox isn't quite so stark, but it's an analogy dammit!
"as for politicians I guess they had no real choice" - Exactly
I you recall, right wing pundits were putting out feelers that Swine flu might be "Obama's Katrina" back in November when it looked like the epidemic was spinning up and we didn't have enough vaccines.
So, if epidemic gets bad, "Obama's Katrina"
If the epidemic levels off (due in no small part to vaccination efforts), "LOL, you overreacted"...
As to the virulence question, yes, the chances of dieing of H1N1 are remote, the chances of getting very sick, less so, but still highly unlikely.
However, the profile of the disease, killing/hurting people in the prime of life, even when they were otherwise healthy, was FAR more pronounced than "regular" flu...
Concern was the proper response.
"Why can't they just send a psk-31 HF radiogram? or the even more fault tolerant HF packet radio"
Well, they could use the aforementioned modes, just not on HF. I'm not saying there would be a point to doing that, but there is nothing saying you couldn't do PSK-31 on 330MHZ if you wanted to...
"What I do care is that GM through its connections in the US Government taking money out of my pocket so someone else can buy this car." -- Are you saying that the Japanese car companies have not exhibited similar collusion with their government? I hope not, because the relationship between Japanese car companies reaches a level we aren't even close to.
The South Koreans are even worse...
Another issue is that diesels really don't like to be turned off and on repeatedly. Gasoline engines start quicker and with far less power required. Of course, on the other hand, diesels can idle using very little fuel.
The first time I rode in a Prius I was shocked at the number of times the engine would switch itself off, only to engage the starter and fire up as soon as we started moving again.
I would expect a Diesel/Electric series hybrid auto would limit, or even eliminate this "switch me off switch me on" use case.
FWIW, a diesel/electric version of the volt architecture is in consideration, for Europe of course...
www.clusty.com
I'm loving this search engine. Besides the big G I find its the only one worth trying.
It is especially good when your search terms are ambiguous or have multiple meanings. For example "Web Service". That has a meeting and a connotation for developers, but a much more accepted connotation to the public at large...
Clusty immediately separates these into nodes so you can focus on what you are looking for...
Now if they only let you set up your own clusters (nodes) It would totally rock.
A contingent of the sociopathic dork cult used to be a fixture of college campi, but now they are all gone. Oh no, the "all we have to do to make the world a better place is be selfish/greedy assholes" is alive and well throughout this country;
Turn on any AM radio and you'll hear this message evangelized....
I don't know if this would qualify, but I've noticed it several times.
How many people out there have become the on-call support for your parents/grandparents girlfriend's parents/grandparents etc... Computer problems?
Not going to go into the chaos of the actual computer configurations spyware/crapware etc., but I'm talking about the general config of the hardware. It seems to almost be a given in these situations that the computers and peripherals will be stuffed into some piece of furniture where it is fundamentally impossible to get them. Cables will be coiled together in an attempt at neatness and organization.
A baffling array of connectors and adapters will be employed, e.g usb to serial cable to serial, serial cable to USB to connect two USB devices...
Also cables will be stretched to their theoretical maximum, so that peripherals and the case itself cannot be moved on centimeter in any direction without decoupling the entire environment and its baffling array of cables and connectors adapters, etc...
"There was no action that the Americans came up with at any stage that had any positive effect for them, and it was all about defence, reaction and retreat. By the time they had napalmed a village, napalmed a huge area of forest or machine gunned an area from a helicopter, the people who they were trying to fight had long gone."
Wrong, we came up with lots of ideas, just didn't have the stomach for them. For one thing we should have started the linebacker2 style raids over the north about 5 years earlier, and cranked up the 52 production lines in KS to increase the scope of the raids.
2) Take the gloves off, just like wwII, firebomb population centers.
3) forget the DMZ, put the agent orange on their cropland.
4) redouble the mining effort of northern harbors.
We didn't have the stomach to do this, thank God, but if we did, North Vietnam would have ended as a country, and with the VC resistance effective wiped out after Tet, there wouldn't be much left.
"You tend to see many people describe the Vietnam War in those terms. 'Lost the will to fight' is substituted for defeat and massacre, which is what really happened.
"
Massacare?? We lost 58000, at the same time killing over 2 million and yet we were massacred?
What color is the sky in your world, its a lovely shade of blue in mind?
""the US got absolutely ripped to pieces (saying they got beat just wouldn't be a fair reflection) ""
Ripped to pieces?? And you are basing this on what exactly?? The US won every major battle in Vietnam, the Tet offensive, for instance was a military disaster for the communists...
The US lost because it lost the will to fight a stupid war that it never should have been in, but "ripped to peices" maybe in your dreams, but thats not how it went down.
Or respond with their own laser-pointer, that happens to be attached to a .357 magnum...
Can somebody tell me why chrome has started to display slashdot so messed up?
