I seem to remember a /. thread about that. Of course, Glide is still hardware dependent, so that would give OGL and edge, anyway.

All this aside, I've been pissed off at @home for some time now (9 months) anyway. When I first got the service, I used to top out downloads at 1.2 MEG/sec! Now, I'm lucky to hit 100k. (Using TCI@home in Northern CA, USA) It has gotten a bit better since AT&T took over TCI, though (but not much. Now I can hit 500k sometimes.)

All this, and if I go to www.2wire.com and check my bandwidth, it tells me 2557 k/sec throughput and toast.net tells me INFINITY k/s.

    Terrible, I tell you. Terrible.

As far as I'm concerned, this is not excusable in any way by @home, and besides, my news server @ work (news.eni.net) doesn't carry some of the ng's that @home's news server does (specifically alt.os.linux.slackware and a few gimp ng's.)

Rest assured that the not-asshole-ish users of @home will be very, very active in making this stop.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a Palm V. The Handspring Visor is way less than 1/2 the price, and it's a comparable PalmOS device.

Anyway, the point I was making was that "developer types" are less likely to use the Gameboy, since, as you stated, it's only got "a couple mediocre games." I agree that it's great for just smacking in a cartridge and playing (unless it's that annoying Pokemon game. Sheesh!), but it's not quite advanced enough for older, Linux-using, Perl-programming Geeks. My 8 year old brother loves his, though. Why wouldn't he? He gets to play his games, but by the time he's old enough to program Perl scripts with his eyes tied behind his back, he'll want more. I guarantee it.

I wasn't flaming. I agree with your point, and was just trying to clarify the one I was trying to make.

Personally, I would much rather have a Palm V, or even better, the decidedly cheaper Handspring Visor, oh hell, I'd even take a CE device, before I had a Gameboy.

I'm not knocking the Gameboy in any sense, but shouldn't development and programming be geared towards a device that's a little more advanced?

Just my 2 cents. Moderate as you please.

  9. A little more info about the rebate on $400 Free From Microsoft for Californians · · Score: 4

A friend of mine recently decided to give this a try. Pending his results, I may do the same. He decided to go to http://www.freemonitors.com, which tells you all about the MS - Viewsonic rebate, and has a complete copy of the terms and conditions per MS. The part that everybody's excited about:

"if for any reason whatsoever you do not continue for the period of time associated with the credit that you have elected to receive, you agree that you will repay MSN the amount of the credit immediately upon termination or cancellation of your MSN Internet Access account; provided that if you are a resident of California or Oregon you will not be required to repay the credit amount."

Whew. That was a mouthful. Anyway, it's there. Plain and simple. I wouldn't doubt that they only give you 12 dollars a month for the rest of forever, but it's still kinda cool if you live in CA or OR.

The bottom line is, Linux isn't (and probably won't) be for everybody. It's not "A better Windows than Windows" as people are lead to believe, or want it to be. It is a different OS entirely!

Granted, it's good to see that a preview is rated for newbies, but where's a preview for someone who want's their box to do IP Masq, serve up a webpage, run Samba, etc???
