While we're at it, we'll go ahead and ban email ('cause sometimes EVIL stuff gets transmitted through email, right?), mailing lists (Alan Cox can just start taking phone calls... there aren't many messages on the kernel mailing list, are there?), cell phones (They can get email now. see above comment re: email.), cable modems and DSL (maybe if it takes a LONG time, people won't want all this EVIL information and data, right?).
Actually, let's just ban computers altogether. It's probably all their fault that all this EVIL information is accessible... just like how guns kill people.
It's not about people! Just remember that... it's all about the machines behind it. Remember T2!!!
Okay. Seriously. I _loved_ Q3, and UT... I was just as hooked on those as anyone else, believe me.
My request to Mr. C, and the whole ID team, is to _please_ do not make Doom 3 a deathmatch only game like Q3 and UT. It kind of feels like a ripoff to have to pay ~40-50 bucks for what, to me, is only 1/2 of a game.
Whatever happened to the games that had multiplayer as an extra feature, but concentrated on the plot? Remember Heretic, Hexen, etc... Hell, even Half Life had an awesome plot, as well as Opposing Force.
Before I start to receive all the flames, yes, I know Q3 and UT both have singleplayer mode, but it's just deathmatch vs. bots, and there's not a plot, or levels to clear, or a final boss, or a princess to save;-)
So, basically, we're allowed to have copies of Metallica songs, but only if they sound like absolute shit, and are from concerts... See, 'cause the shitty booleg live tapes are already paid for. People had to buy tickets for that concert. Metallica's already been paid for that music. Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.
Before I start, I wanna say that...And Justice For All is the best album ever. By anyone.
Now then, I recall reading somewhere that Lars stated "In the end, it's about money" or something to that effect. Is this true?
I have to believe that it's not, I've been a Metallica fan for too long to accept Metallica as the type to care about money. If that is the case, then I, sadly, will probably not remain a Metallica fan.
Now, I'm against piracy, in all forms, and if it was any other band bitching about Napster I wouldn't care... but I remember when Metallica wanted their music bootlegged, traded, PIRATED, whatever you want to call it. Why? Exposure. So, now you guys are famous so you don't need exposure? Interesting.
You guys know how many local bands I know that would kill to have 300,000+ people hear their music, sold or not? Quite a few. I personally just signed my friends band up at mp3.com so his music can be heard.
Metallica: Please drop your lawsuit... you'll gain fans back... it's not hurting your sales. If anything, EMBRACE the mp3 movement. Again: It is not hurting your sales. Look at Limp Bizkit (which, by the way, is a Band. Not a him, as you stated in your chat), Offspring, Phish, Grateful Dead. They're all doing fine.
Sorry this was so long, but I need to get it off my chest.
"Your honor, we have here record sales from before the Black album, when we didn't suck. And here, we have record sales from around the time we discovered 335,000 people distributing songs from our first 4 albums and Garage Days, via Napster. If you notice, none of the songs are from an album released after The Black Album except Garage Days, which is pre-Black Album music anyway. As you can clearly see, our albums have done nothing but get horribly worse since The Black Album, and the illegal distribution of MP3's does hurt profits, but not much since our old cd's are getting harder and harder to come by, and the new ones suck."
I personally will be boycotting Metallica, because I remember when they _enjoyed_ having people bootleg their music. Why? Because they wanted to be heard and distributed.
Metallica needs to learn from Phish and the Grateful Dead... oh wait, not the Dead anymore, but maybe Dave Matthews Band and Phish.
Metallica: You've lost a fan. A paying one, at that.
Wow. All I gotta say: ease up on the flames, guys. It's a new site. It's a small site. It doesn't have loads and loads of bandwidth. linuxiso is a site that was created by my pal searcher_ who just happens to hang out at www.linuxnewbie.org , a really great help site for anyone new to Linux, or using Linux at all.
Anyway, he (and I) hang out in #linuxnewbie on EFNet, and I just chatted with him... he said they're planning on adding more pipes soon (he's kinda busy with work right now. Priorities, I guess... =P), and the poor guy didn't even know he was on Slashdot.
So, in conclusion, quit bitching about his 30 user limit. For all _you_ know, the guy may be hosting this thing on a 486 in his living room...
I think it's great that you're (Slackware) becoming your own company. Now, the questions:
1. Will you continue to be the sole maintainer of Slackware, or will you be bringing on help? 2. Are there any plans to add a more "user friendly", if you will, package management? I know there's RPM support, so this may not even be an issue, though. 3. I believe it was mentioned before, but will any work be done on upgradeability? I understand the switch from libc5 to glibc needing a full reinstall, it makes sense, but what about upgrading Slackware 7? 4. Most of the time, when I read distro flame wars, the 2 that always come out on top are Debian and Slackware. I have to assume that you do this because you love it, but do you care about whether or not the world loves Slackware?
Thanks for your time, and even moreso, THANK YOU FOR SLACKWARE!
Is Mr. Volkerding planning on bringing in more people to help him maintain the distribution?
Honestly, I wouldn't want to see that. I've been using Slackware for about a year now, and I like the fact that it's only maintained by one (fairly picky) person who is the current maintainer anyway.
Obviously, more people will have to be brought in to work for the new company (and I am accepting offers!!!), but please, please don't let anyone else help with maintaining Slack!
I seem to remember _everybody_ blowing up, not too long ago, because Real was yanking user info w/o users' knowledge and/or consent. Anyone else remember? I'm sure glad I didn't use Real products.
Does it seem like Real is just trying to win the public over again by siding with "The Underdog" in releasing Linux products in partnership w/ Redhat? I know I still won't be using their products.
That would be like Microsoft releasing Linux products (say, Media Player) and everybody getting excited and forgetting about MS being an absolutely crooked company.
Well, I guess I made my point (kinda. Anybody get what I'm saying?)
Yeah, but if you think about it, there's really not any money to be made in hardware, either, and it keeps improving!
As far as not making money in the OS market, I disagree. There's plenty of chance to make money, as RedHat makes clear, even though the software is open source.
Just as Darth Gates and Linus Skywalker come to the epic final battle, and Darth prepares to utter the famous "I am your Father" line, he has a fatal exception error, followed by 3 BSOD's, in turn causing him to do a hard boot, therefore trashing the Death Star's filesystem and rendering it no more useful than a planet-sized paperweight!!!
"Well that's a great idea, but not too many windows users just jump at a $80 - $200 upgrade. Hence why you'll still find windows 95 on quite a few computers."
Actually, I still have W95 dual booting with Linux because W98 absolutely sucks, and there's nothing it can do that I can't make W95 do.

Can I have one?
M
F-CK YOU.
But, I liked this guy's response too. Especially how he doesn't claim to work for a Law Office, but for "A Professional Corporation"
How cool is that?
M
Will they lose any of their patents, or will they just transfer some of them to each company?
Who cares, really. Like this is going to stop me from using dpkg? Nope.

Don't you mean:

when Metallica _liked_ the fact that thier music was bootlegged, copied, and passed around?
I do. Unfortunately, Metallica doesn't seem to.
Whatever. I haven't particularly enjoyed anything of theirs since the Black album, and that was a stretch.
I wonder what Cliff Burton would say.

Apt-get update.
Ahem... APT-GET update.
A-HEM! APT-GET UPDATE!!!
Damn wireless modems.
Not true. Didn't you read that double entries will be disqualified?
I'd say it probably only decreases your chances about 500%

They have the right idea.. If they could actually get stuff released when they say, that's another story.
Besides, if Slackware numbered _their_ versions like everyone else, they'd be on about Slackware 28 by now.
Then we'll _never_ get to see Internet 3!
Two words:
Lara Croft
duh. All us guys want to see if the other female characters in video games can measure up to her.
The only thing I really want to know about MS:
Since the program sucks, I wonder whether or not Bill Gates uses Outlook for his messaging needs. You think he runs 98, or maybe Win2K?
How many times a day does Bill have to reboot? Does he fire somebody each time?
Inquiring minds want to know!
I hope nobody gets too excited about this one.
I seem to remember _everybody_ blowing up, not too long ago, because Real was yanking user info w/o users' knowledge and/or consent. Anyone else remember? I'm sure glad I didn't use Real products.

...on who was going to buy them. I would hate to see, oh, say, MS buy up a bunch of them, but does it really matter who sells domain names?
/dev/null
Doesn't really seem like that big of a deal, if you ask me.
all flames promptly routed to

I'd rather buy this:
e cs/tech___specs.html
http://www.kryotech.com/Products/superg/Tech_Sp
It's a barebones athlon based PC overclocked to 1Ghz, and it comes with a 1 year warranty.
I'd rather have someone else to blame if I happened to fry my machine.
Mike
not bad, but why didn't you post your predictions in chronological order??? 8-)
Can't wait for 1/2 life for Linux. opleasepleaseplease...
