  1. Full Circle on Abandonware And Copyright Laws · · Score: 1

...and here we are my friends. The open source circle finally meets.

"We are not out to get [software publishers] or to steal from them," says Kenyon. "We are just here to provide the public with software that can't be obtained by any other means."

Everything is free, past it's shelf life, the expiry date.

heh, the highest form of hypocrisy.

I bet the Napster and Nutstella fans will be all over this one.

Copyright, Intellectual Rights, and your right to freely distribute, at no cost, that which is not yours.

In the UK, this would, in common parlance, be called "Fencing". It's where thiefs offload thier goods to middlemen.

    Its theft, pure and simple.

  2. Lets take it further on Solar Powered Colocation · · Score: 3

Wind has been used as an energy source for thousands of years. Up to 4000 years ago, the Babylonians and the Chinese used wind power to pump water for crops, and sailing boats were around long before that.
Wind power was used in Europe in the middle ages to mill (meaning grind) grain. This is where the term windmill comes from.

Micro hydro power is probably the least common of the three readily used renewable energy sources, but it has the potential to produce the most power, more reliably than solar or wind power if you have the right site. This means having access to a river or creek that has a high enough flow to produce useable power for a good part of the year. Many creeks and rivers are permanent, ie, they never dry up, and these are the most suitable for micro-hydro power production.

Five men who left Birmingham after the bombing were found guilty of the killings. The men were later acquitted of the charges after languishing in jail for 16 years.

  8. Why does Slashdot Run Every Microsoft Story ? on EU To Take Legal Action Against Microsoft · · Score: 1

I work for a large multinational company as a support technician. I have Microsoft qualifications, and perceive myself as being technically literate. I am an experienced VB programmer and have written quite a few applications that my company has actively deployed for thousands of users. I have been a keen reader of Slashdot for many years, and can't believe how obsessively Slashdot and the over-zealous Linux bigots delight in legal issues and Microsoft. It may have missed everyones attention here but 99% of all major companies USE Microsoft products. They use then because we are safe in the knowledge that they have been strenuosly tested for deployment in large scale organisations. I for one, would not even consider using Linux at work (though I do run Red Hat 6.2 at home for browsing, it is quicker) for the following reasons : Users : Most office people are stupid with computers. It is difficult enough to set up a printer with Windows and I know what I am doing. It would be a nightmare with RedHat. Support : Most people do not have RedHat skills, it would be more difficult to find them. Qualifications : How would I be able to determine the suitability of an applicant if they do not have something like an MCSE ? I see that you can have a RedHat certificate. So before everyone jumps up and down with delight I think that you should stop and think about the above points, as this helps no one.

It gets me everytime. To allow your linux users the same level of functionality as their windows using counterparts, why do the drivers need to be open source ? Why can't you charge for provision of closed source drivers, providing functionality, documentation, support and an increasing level of product maturity with driver revisions ? Maybe I'm a profiteering capitalist, but I don't see why mine (nor many of my collegues) hard work should be provided for free to one choice of OS and not another.
