The more relevent question is whether you can have a peer-to-peer network without central servers that *can* scale. And the answer is "no".
I did my Ph.D. research on it. It works. Gnutella is
broken, but don't draw a conclusion that a server-less environment can't scale. Read before you post this crap.
I use digital studio monitors (roland ds90's). They sound great, and have optical in so I can brag to my friends about all the fiber in my living room. Plus they are ready for DVD audio ( 96Khz, 24 bit )
I clearly remember Jaron telling me that we (while
I was at NPS) should model our software after
the unix shell tools. He gave examples of how
composable they are. That you could just pipe the
output of one command to the next, so that you
could create the exact tool you needed. He wanted
me and my colleagues to create VR software that
could work that well. The fact that he now craps
on UNIX is simply a contradiction.

I used to work w/ this group while I was getting my Ph.D. It has much promise, but is a ways off. The scene acquisition stuff is pretty cool, but mostly NTII is a demo to show what you can do if you had a couple of gigabits to throw around.
The omni-directional treadmill was used in some experiments a few years back by the NPSNET research group. Here is a link to the paper published at UIST'97.

do not exist.
I had the same problem. I went to names4ever.com, and now me and my dopemotherfucker are very happy.
