As a previous poster said there are solutions for this already, such as Vertex Inc [vertexinc.com] and Taxware [adp.com] Companys all over the world have to deal with local tax authorities. How do you think companies like Walmart or McDonald's handle this, do you think they have their local managers tracking tax code? No they have an application that plugs directly into there ERP application which is connected with all their branches and mikely connected directly to their POS system to insure the proper taxes are being charged.
Its funny how after Compaq bought DEC they planned to end of life the Alpha platform then shortly after they were purchased by HP who also planned to E.O.L. the Alphas several times but keeps them going. They say October 06 will be the end. Will the Digital Equipment legacy end, or get another breath of life?
You know what Stuart? I like you. You're not like the other people here in the trailer park. Oh no, don't get me wrong, they're fine people, good Americans. But they're content to sit back, maybe watch a little Mork and Mindy on channel 57. Maybe kick back a cool Coors 16-ouncer. They're good fine people, Stuart.
Is your case painted, many paints used by computer manufactures also have the added benefit of acting as EM/RF shielding. I have one painted Antec case which never caused any trouble with RF mice/keyboard etc. after upgrading to an un finished aluminium case I can no longer reliably use the same RF mice/keyboard, plus now i have speaker hum that wasn't there before and monitor distortion.
There is definatly the aspect of moving YOUR data your OS and your preferences from site to site easily that is marketable. You can take your "computer" back and forth to work and client sites etc.
I would say its most like when Marc Lucovsky left DEC and took his knowledge of VMS to Microsoft to write what became NT, do you think it was a coincidence that it ran on the Alpha chip.
In response to MS overworking their employees I would guess someone this high up the chain is only overworked when he chooses to be.
I find none of the vedors good for repairs and replacement parts. They would rather you buy a new laptop, for a problem such as this I would suggest epoxy.
my company uses netbackup for all out backup needs we have evaluated many options, but find due to lack of support from other vendors when used with non supported solutions, OSS is not a feasible solution. Our company is a 99.9% solution provider and if something breaks there must be a chain of monetary responsibility. Veritas gives us the support we need and all of our other vendors support netbackup. we do have a couple linux servers but for the most part we are a sun environment, which takes us full circle to supported configurations and a 4 hour service window.
The idea of removable media is archival, not short term as you would use a hard drive for. There will always be a need for long term storage media, and the faster you can get it to disk the more valuable the platform is. Also removable media is more portable than a disk drive. Just my $.02
I find that unencoding takes much longer than burning. While packet writing with a 2.4x seems to be more than fast enough. With the prices of 4x drives as low as they are geting the price point for 8x just wont be worth it for now.
It's not that the ISPs believe allowing US to run servers of any sort is going to use any more or less bandwidth than downloading pron, its that it will compete w/ their own services offerrings. They want you to pay them an extras 5.00 a month for a mailbox or 100 megs of unlimited webspace! or whatever they are selling on that day of the week!
Censorship is forced it is not something you choose. If I choose to not see content that is a right, it is not the loss of rights as censorship implies. By not allowing you to choose what you do or do not wish to see, the disallowment of a device such as this to be released on the market is the true censorship.
In breaking news, Senator Larry Ellison (D Cal), has pushed through a bill requiring all citizens and anyone entering the country to be "tagged" with a security becon.
In bussiness news Oracle Corporation (Nasdaq: ORCL), stock tripled in price on the board.
Back to you Taco.
I've found one of the greatest computer books for non-computer people to be "In the Beginning... Was the Command Line" which was posted here about a year ago and is also available in paperback, by Neal Stephenson author of Cryptonomicon and other classics. It can still be found at http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning.html
if you haven't read it you should.
You may want to look into Starband, available any where you have a south facing view in north america, and 400kb/s not to shabby, resonably priced too. http://www.starband.com
Be is Awesome thats all there is to it. If more developers would come on board, which GPL would help with, and port some more apps I'd have no arguments at all with it. All I have to say is if you haven't played with it you should (the personal edition is FREE! http://free.be.com.)
Didn't Palm end up with BeOS?

Or boycott all sales of software to the entire nation until the regulation is overturned.

"The page is on a .jp uni server so they SHOULD be able to handle the herd of rhinos that is ./." Or Not.
Its not like 'Suddenly Susan' isn't in syndication.
For this to be the ultimate handheld it would need cellular, gps, and WiFI. probably a couple other things too.
