That works if you have the staff that understands the app and the systems it runs on/needs to run. Unfortunately, a lot of managers see "free" software and dive on that not understanding that they need people to maintain/support that.
I am blessed to be working at a company with slightly smarter managers. I am the one with the weak linux knowledge. Half our servers are already linux.
Cheap is a valid metric for evaluation. The employees will use what the company gives them to do the job the company asks them to do. These aren't personal gaming machines at your house.
I have found that combining Windows XP with FOSS is a good thing. You give people an OS they are know, along with software that doesn't cost you anything but the time it took to create the gold image.
My company saves money by buying our PCs used. We buy off-lease Dells for a pittance, and they already have the XP Pro sticker on them. Microsoft Tax? Not in this company. And we aren't talking about slacker machines, either. P4 with 2Gb RAM for a tad over $200 each.
Cheap PC + Windows XP sticker + FOSS = IT being able to buy more toys.
The Noodly appendages of FSM command you to rise up and slay with Prego sauce anyone who offends His Noodliness by including words of wisdom from his Great Cookbook in their songs or slashdot posts. Unless, of course, proper accrediting is given, including a sprinkle of oregano and paprika.
The Z10's have a cool look to them. I think they took styling cues from Cray. Not enough blinky lights on the outside, though. Everyone knows a mainframe is supposed to have blinky lights and tape spindles whirrying about.
How are they going to be able to tell the difference between everyone!?
Just a guess, but...Computer software will scan each photo and create a digital profile of every citizen, which will then be used in conjunction with a future camera system on every street of every major city where the movements of every citizen will be closely monitored to insure their safety. And the software is sufficiently advanced now that fake facial hair won't fool it.
Stop trying to appear clever by using acronyms no one understands.
You don't understand the assembly equivalent of GOTO? You must never have touched assembly, then. Though, to be fair, when I did VAX Assembler, I did not use BNE.
Trying to improve MPG in cars and trucks, I have found, is an exercise in futility. Sure, using a few hypermiling tricks, you might gain something, but considering some of the tricks I have read, they are downright dangerous!
If you really want to get great MPG, get a vehicle designed from the start to get great MPG. I bought a Kawasaki Ninja 250. This year, I put 9,000 miles on it. Motorcycles, across the board, beat out most any car/truck. They put less wear on the roads and have fewer moving parts to maintain than cars.
The down side is, of course, you get wet when it rains. Suck it up, nancy boy, that's life. Sometimes, if feels quite good. For you folks in warmer climates, you have it best for motorcycle riding more months than northerners.
Insurance is also cheaper for bikes, than cars. It is a win-win-win all around.
Well they either should have stuck with 7.10 or waited for 8.10.
That's news...
8.04 is a long-term release. In the world of servers, that counts for something. Also, there were changes from 7.10 to 8.04 that were probably things Wikimedia wanted to take advantage of.
A review, by an associate of the author, of an obscure product, with a picture of the book plastered on the front page of Slashdot. Who was paid off for that?
Obscure product? What world have you been living in?
Yes but then we have created a problem by removing 10,000,000,000 pirates from the market. Pirates need to eat too. Studies also show that 12/15 of those 750,000 are part-time ax-murderers. I think the statistics show the real victims here.
If we remove 10 billion pirates from the planet, won't our global temperature shoot through the roof?

Actually, COBOL is more widely used than any of those. Not sexy, but it literally pays the bills.
Man, too bad my kid is missing out on all this packaged education while she is reading books, playing with blocks, playing outside, and "helping" her parents.
My child has, a result of the programming, a verbal skill 3 years ahead of his age. *shrug*
And he plays with his cars, blocks and helps out mommy and daddy around the house, as well. Since I stated he was 3, you must either not realize that 3-yr olds never sit still for anything...or you just felt like being pedantic.
Even if you're disabled that's a lot of time on your ass!
Don't have a kid, do ya? My TV is on Noggin, Nick, Cartoon, or Baby First TV all day. The programming is educational and entertaining at the same time for much of what my 3-yr watches. And he is learning Spanish while he is at it.
Nintendo has generally been about not bloating its systems in the past. Why would they release a new DS with all this crap while it's still going strong?
Because it will make them trillions of more yen?
What if Nintendo has the expertise to add the new functions without ruining the existing game-play features? And there is also a chance it won't be called a "DS" and will be a new product line that won't affect the game-players.
...but, just quit and get a job in another state. Why subject yourself to a job that you hate to work that much? The laws in Cali obviously favor the companies and not the workers. So...move. The cost of living is a lot cheaper anywhere else. If you are a good coder, you will get a job.

Great, just add more fuel to the Scientology fire.
We setting scientologists on fire now? I missed this memo!

Money. The American way is to donate appropriate amounts of cash to the campaign funds of the particular people you are trying to sway.
Good sir, I detect a hint of sarcasm in your typing.
They are teaching monkeys how to play video games. Surfing slashdot cannot be far behind.
I'm surprised Google isn't considering moving some of its data centres to Arctic locations where you get cool temperatures year-round.
Don't kid yourself. They probably have. But then, who did you get to work at what would probably be a very remote location?
Additionally, such remote locations may suffer from not enough bandwidth and/or electricity.
When you are a big company that spends enough money, you can ask for this sort of thing and your demand will be met.
"Guarantee us a higher temp CPU or we will switch to AMD...and tell everyone about it."
I have a feeling that the CPUs can handle a bit more temp than they are rated as a CYA move by Intel, anywho.
I was thinking that maybe MS marketing, like the marketplace, had chosen to pretend that they didn't exist :)
I remember using them. This would be one of the few times me and Microsoft's marketing department would be in agreement.
I dunno, it works out if you do consumer OSs:
Win 3
Win 95
Win 98
Win ME
Win XP
Vista
Win 7
And where do Windows 1.0, 2.0, Windows/286 and Windows/386 come into your numbering scheme?

Apparently there are quite a number of folks here who are not smarter than a 1-1/2 year old...
You must be new here.

Or least processes them for us.
I'm not saying I think (or care) one way or another but it is conceivable he used a parachute...I mean...this is Steve Fossett after all.
So, maybe Fosset and DB Cooper are not kicking back a few drinks with Elvis on some lush pacific island paradise?

Where they still won't get guaranteed overtime?
Where you can at least sue when you aren't paid for overtime. Some states have much friendlier labor than Cali.
