Exactly. Just what is the deal with everyone falling over themselves to use PDF? It's a prepress format and excels at that, but for screen reading it's pretty much useless. Proving a PDF download as a copy of a paper document is just laziness because you're just using the same file that you sent to the printers.
Hopefully when people start to get serious about ebooks we'll see a more flexible refolowable format. Like, oh I don't know, html?
There are people, alot of people, me included, for whom 'just a white box' is pretty much the pinnacle of looking good. It's in the finish and the details. In this instance, it's not quite a white box. It's curved on the sides, appears to float off the surface it's placed on. It has brushed aluminium sides and a slightly translucent white top.
It really does look really nice. Nothing to do with RDF's or whatever other kinds of mental retardation some people will doubtless accuse me of. No it's actually genuinely lovely to look at. And I'm going to buy one and I don't care what you say.
You know I don't usually bother with this sort of argument, but you people who don't get it are astonishingly dumb. Really you are. Here's the substance in his post that you missed:
it's about the user experience
Now do you get it? It's not about a 5MP camera, or an FM reciever/transmitter, or any other bullet point like that. It's about software. It's always been about software and it seems to me that it's only really Apple that understand this.
Yeah I'd say that is kind of a big deal. This whole totally bizarre square bracket notation is weird enough, but for it to exist in a language called Objective C always seemed borderline bloodyminded to me.
Therefore, I am in favour of this legislation and I am sick of my taxes being used to feed/fund/house these people.
It's not legislation you moron it's some extremely dodgy 'science' that is intended to determine an individual's country of origin. That it will fail to do this seems to bother those in charge of the initiative not a whit, which is probably because they're only in it for the money and don't care about the welfare of other humans.
But it still doesn't make any sense. People are born here, perhaps more than you'd like, and some of them will doubtless grow up and 'sponge' off the state.
Immigration controls make no sense and do nothing but cause harm and heartache. They are the last bastion of institutionalised racism and maybe if we're really lucky one day they'll all go away.
Until then we have to put with specious arguments such as 'they steal our jobs/women/land/children/money' and 'they're all smelly/weird/given to insupportable amounts of prayer'.
The original point that moving from Yorkshire to Hampshire is no different from moving from Outer Spongilia to Hampshire is absolutely on the money.
Recently I undertook to write a video player that could play multiple video files on multiple displays all sync'd up correctly. This was a nightmare, and keeping the audio sync'd correctly too (only one of the video files had audio) was twice the nightmare.
This single logical monitor across multiple physical monitors would have made this problem much simpler for me.
This is absolutley bang on. And I'll tell you what else - in Visual Studio the 'save as' option was changed to 'save as', which makes it ten times harder to find (I honestly thought for a while that it didn't even have the option). Relative to the size of the text the difference between 'Save' and 'Save As...' was vastly reduced making the option harder to use.
If you travel in time, then presumably your physical self vanishes from that timeline (whatever timeline might mean), and re-appears elsewhen.
Which would be fine, were it not for the principle of the conservation of energy, which as far as I can see pretty much rules out time travel in any form, many-worlds oriented or not.
I know, it's incredible. And what are those icons down the side supposed to be? The 'videos' item doesn't even seem to have one. Just looks sloppy and unappealing.
Perhaps they're not icons, maybe they're a selection of images from your library or something? Looks like the headphone jack is on the bottom too, which would be annoying when you're trying to dock it I should think.
Still OLED should save on battery life, or at least it will for the Zune since most of their UI is black.... (I use my ipod as a makeshift torch sometimes the display is so bright)
Modx is great, I love it too and have used it for a fairly large site. However it has two big problems that made me move to silverstripe instead.
1) It stores the php code for the plugins in the database, and forces you to edit them in the browser. This is *horrible* and means you can't use source control with them unless you hack your way out of this insanity with a require statement.
2) The documentation is hopeless.
Oh and (3) the permissions model is weird (but you do get used to it).
...Well actually for your $600 you got the computer the monitor & the keyboard without any OS at all.
Funny how people (including me) consider windows XP to be essentially free :)
...But at least nobody can steal a password that is stored only in your mind.
They can if they use the $5 wrench decryption method...
YES!! I love slashdot - it's comments like these that keep me coming back for more! "You're an idiot" - Brilliant! Bravo!
And I can carry my guns, my coke, my hookers, etc.
Can I come for a ride on your plane?
the physical blocks would never get touched.
...Well apart from whatever physical block is used to store the logical mappings of course :)
I installed XP on a machine with 32M of ram once. I tried ubuntu on the same machine, and the kernel wouldn't even uncompress into memory.
Face it - ubuntu is terrible.

No optical drive, intel atom processor - not really comparable to the mini.
Probably uses less power though :)

A bit like you really.
Hear hear!

And god, directshow is horrible....
....very sexist and racist.
Or, very sexy and racy.
Well that's dandy - and presumably had you chosen to click 'Allow' you would have sought permission from all your friends prior to doing so?

Use boost as well as Qt and you'll never see another delete statement again.
It really detracted from my enjoyment of the movie until I became caught up in the action enough to stop thinking about it.
The answer's in the question folks...
MP3's war on quality seems to be going ok...
Convenience will beat quality every time.

This is the funniest thing I've ever read on ./ - mods are all asleep at the wheel.
