Be this the case, the spec is not open and is too difficult to hack, it is bound to die.

Notice the thing about alignment. You don't go down in score for a positive rating, even if that rating is below your current default. You only lose points for posts moderated all the way to -1. So for a +4 person who posts something mediocre, being moderated to a 2 or a 1 isn't bad at all.

Well...I think it could happen this way: You post a comment. Starts at 1. (Lets say your align is 4). Someone with moderator status bumps the post up to, say 2. Well, that gives you enough points to start at default level 2. (I think it is align of 5 that starts you at default 2). You get used to this new default. But then a different moderator lowers your post back down to 1. Then I think you would go back down to default 1.

Of course, It wouldn't happen very often. And more than likely, you wouldn't even notice that you went from align 4 to 5 and back to 4. But with the amount of people that post...it could happen.

*shrug* I would like to be able to self moderate a post down, tho. And maybe have that not count against you.

Now, don't get me wrong, I respect RMS, (and I certainly couldn't get any usefull work done without much of the software released by the FSF).

But this all comes down to the bottom line: Linux is getting attention as the "free" OS in the media. RMS wants the attention since he started GNU before Linux was was started. If he didn't want people using his software in other systems, he should not have released it to the public.

so what if companies are opening up source to get other people to fix their bugs? So what? At least the damn bugs DO get fixed, and we're all better off as a result.

And what about those honest people who work for a living that are no longer needed to fix their company's bugs? If I were paid to write free software, I would be most happy. But I am not. I have to work for a living. I don't want to be cut by my company because it thinks it can whore writers of free software.

I would rather a company open it's standards and api's. That allows others to play but wont cost jobs. We don't *need* Novel's code. Or Apple's code. There is more than enough free software out there to do what they do.

Novel said that "opening" their source helps create community. But do we really *need* their source? Wouldn't it be better if they opened and standardized their protocols, api's, etc? There would be no "help me, help me! fix my source so I can sell it!" using of the Open Source community.
