On the one hand, Gates can come off as being greedy, and often times not practicing what he preaches. He basically seems to care about being rich.
On the other hand, you could say Gates is a perfect example that our mutated form of capitalism can indeed work. The man basically started from scratch. Whether he stole ideas or not is irrelevant: the point is, he didn't do a single thing that no one else couldn't have done themselves.
The difference is, he actually did it.
Put aside your personal opinion of Microsoft for the moment, and look at what this man has accomplished. Starting from basically nothing, he has built a multi-billion dollar buisness which is used by roughly 90% of the computing world. I don't care how he got there, I don't care if someoen likes him or doesn't like him, I don't care what toes he stepped on to get there; there are a couple FACTS that you cannot deny regardless of your opinion:
FACT: WE THE CONSUMERS created this monopoly. No one but the general consumers made this company a massive force in the computing world. They didn't magically pull money out of their ass; WE THE CONSUMERS gave it to them.
FACT: There is NOTHING that Bill Gates has done that someone else couldn't do; he just did it first and best. Regardless of how he got to where he was, you cannot deny the fact that in terms of adoption rate, income, and market penetration, NOBODY is ahead of Microsoft right now. NOBODY.
FACT: There is nothing stopping someone else from toppling Microsoft; Linux and Apple could do it...although I think Apple is in a better position to do so than Linux. Linux being open source actually kind of hurts Linux in this regard only because it makes it harder to get a definate measure of "success"; if I develop my own distro of Linux, it's not the same as your distro and thus is not the same operating system. But that's an entirely different conversation.)
Whatever your opinion is of Microsoft and Bill Gates, you cannot deny that the man has accomplished something no one else has.
Don't like it? Prove him to be horrible and change the opinion of hundreds of millions of people that use his product.
Number one, I love how because I dissagree with the common slashdot opinion I am modded flamebait. yes I know it was how I said it, but guess what? That's how pissed I get about it, just as whoever mods me down obviously gets pissed about what I said.
Now. As far as your response:
"Oh wake up and get a clue! Apples DRM is easily circumvented and exists because the Association representing the copyright holders of the material Apple distributes demands that their content be "copy protected"."
I don't care what their reasons are for doing it; the bottom line is that they do. I know they want to make a lot of money, and I have no problem with that. It's the nature of buisness. I also know that by selling the music that they do (along with all the other things) they make a lot of money.
That doesn't change the fact that they support DRM by distributing it. It shouldn't need to be easily circumvented. You are basically saying you are in favor of being told what you are allowed to do with the music that you purchase. Again, I don't give a shit if the "associations" demand it. By purchasing from iTunes (and thus, from apple...this goes for any other DRM-using music service, too) you are essentially supporting DRM. If iTunes (and, again, other online downloading services) makes less money, the record companies make less money. If that happens enough, they will be more likely to get rid of DRM.
I assure you that if so many millions of people are willing to spend as much money as they are on something that is restricted, they will have NO problem spending that same money on shit that is NOT restricted.
Besides all of that though, congrats on supporting DRM. Glad to hear you are supporting people you will never meet telling you what you can and can't do with something that you legally purchase, download, and own. Heaven help you if you ever support the government doing the same thing with your kids. Course, you would have no problem funding that police state either, would you? No, of course not.
Have you ever tried explaining the whole DRM thing to someone that was unaware of it? You would be suprised how many people don't even realize it is going on...
Try talking to a few people that don't know that apple (or anyone else for that matter) even does this. See their reaction.
I can tell you this: I've done it to roughly 20 people or so, and nearly every single one dumped their iPods on ebay and bought something that wasn't apple soley because of this.
I know apple isn't the only company that does it. I know that. But with the god-like opinion the ignorant consumer has of apple, they expect them to "do no evil". When they find out that they aren't any better than any other major corporation, they get pissed for being misled.
I understand there aren't that many people that realize this is going on. The more people that are informed about it however, the more likely they are to not support companies that DO support DRM. Information and knowledge are very powerful tools; we should learn to use them properly.
I ripped my ENTIRE ~400 cd collection using windows media player, and you know what? It works FANTASTIC on ANYTHING.
I mean, really....BUYING music online is a waste of time soley because of the DRM. If you want to go the legal route with music, you could find the physical CD on Ebay or Yahoo Auctions or Amazon or a myriad of other sites for most likely about the same price if not less...so you gotta wait a couple days. I don't know about you, but being able to do whatever the fuck I want with something that I purchased and owned is worth waiting a couple days if neccessary.
LOL, yeah I guess you could say they chose the internet. Still, there is a market (albiet a bit smaller) for hard-copy porn (pun intended) I'll tell you this though, my fiance and I are both porn junkies, and the idea of seeing porn in "glorious" 1080P is quite appealing to the both of us;-)
"Why can this be assured? What is your evidence?"
No evidence, just making that prediction based on what I have seen in the past...while the porn industry is competitive, I think put into the right situation it has the ability to come together as a community, rather than just an industry. Even though they compete (sometimes heavily) with each other, porn companies tend ot be more supportive of their competitors than other industries mainly because they need to stick together so as to dodge bullshit that's called on their "adult entertainment."
The cat(house) is out of the bag now. This was the news many people that have been following the so-called "war" have been waiting for: which side will the porn industry go with?
Granted, this is just one production company, however it can be assured that more are to follow. Personally, I don't really care which side wins; with the possibility of holographic storage so close in the future (~5-10 years, if industry estimations are correct) I most likely will be sticking with DVD until then.
Despite the news from the industry tho, I wouldn't exactly call this a nail in the coffin...I will, however, say that this brings us one step closer to the end, regardless of which format "wins". I like that blu-ray has more capacity...I'm an extra's and commentary-track fiend, so more space means potentially more content for me to view on less discs...then again, HD-DVD is FAR cheaper both in purchasing and manufacturing.
They both have their plus and minus to go with them...for me, a progressive scan DVD player is plenty fine for now. I'll wait until the "next big thing" rather than "the next medium thing" to shift what format I collect movies in.
Oh, granted, they have sold hundreds of thousands of the damn things...but just because everyone is huffing the same shit doesn't mean that shit is the fire.
There is no worse fanboy than an apple fanboy. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Ford, Dodge........I don't care who you are. NO ONE is worse than an apple fanboy/girl. It's UNTHINKABLE to them that there are people out there (such as myself) that want apple to die a painful death.
Why, you ask?
Because people are sheep. They flock to everything they release like it's the second coming of the messiah, and call anyone who thinks it's shit a heretic.
Well I think it's shit. I'm not the only one, either. Their advertising is annoying as hell, their products are (generally) overpriced for what you get, everything has the same general look to it, and that look is SHIT.
Mod me down if you want. Call me a troll, an asshole, whateve ryouw ant. I don't care.
I will have no part in your legion of ineptitude, nor shall I succumb to the blindness and sheer stupidity of the ignorant masses. I have nothing against fads; they help to shape our culture. The whole apple thing is not a fad, however.
"Or had you not noticed the design similarities between the Wii and the iPod? Even the packaging is markedly similar."
It's funny you mention that...that is actually my biggest (and besides the speaker in the remote, my only) reservation about the Wii: Nintendo has always had designs that were very much nintendo: edges that were both rounded and not at the same time.
While the Wii is nice looking, I think it is kind of a step away from nintendo's heritage in physical shell design on their consoles. I'm not saying it's BAD, but consdering one of their main goals with the Wii is nostalgia, they kinda mucked up the design of the box.
Still, it is a slick looking console, there is no denying that. I just wish it was more....Nintendo-like in it's appearance.
...in all honesty, I would have been willing to pay to play diablo II multiplayer.....even with all the duping and everything that happend, that was a FUN game that stole many hours of my life from me.
Even if multiplayer hellgate was only half as good as diablo II, I would gladly pay for it.
While 10 years ago I would disagree with you that alot of families are like that, as the "older gaming generation" gets older and older, I think families like yours will begin becoming more and more commonplace...I've been gaming since the commodore 64 days, and I can assure you that my kids will be shown what I grew up with. Gaming has done a lot for my life...MANY good memories...playing punch out, against my bro with ice hockey....a little later all-night games of NBA jam and street fighter 2...LAN parties...I mean, I could prolly write a book on all my gaming memories.
I cannot imagine not having them, and I want my kids to experience the joy and happiness that gaming has brought to me my entire life. Not to mention the problem solving, hand-eye coordination, and overall sharpness of mind playing games has brought about.
By that same token, I think current-gen system are just as important as the "retro" systems for them to experience. Similar to Star Wars, I want them to know how the story begun, not just where it is now.
True, but that would require a massive recoding and redesign of the game (or at least based on my previous MMO experience which goes all the way back to gemstone III says so) This is comparatively quite easy to implement (what they are doing) and offers a much deeper experience than the standard deathmatch multiplayer
True, but you aren't japanese. Anyone from anywhere int he world other than here (usa) can tell you that the gaming culture can be quite different in other countries (for the record, I've never been to japan...just making an uninformed guess here)
I am going to be showing a bit of my stupidity here, but there is something I have NEVER been able to figure out...what does it mean when someone types (sic) ?
I can understand where you are coming from, however I think you read a bit hastily...
These multiplayer elements are IN ADDITION TO the single player game. That is still fully intact and present. They are saying instead of the typical deathmatch online play, it will be mmo-style.
To me, this is an choice which has vast potential. Implemented properly, the play style and story line and world of Hellgate could indeed prove to work well in a heavily instanced world..."safe houses" could be in the same vain as guild wars towns, while "action zones" could be instanced.
To me, this single player/mmo mixed experience sounds like a fantastic idea. If they do it right, they will definately have my money up front and monthly.
a rather common joke in our house was to loosen the ball all the way to the top, so the next person that grabbed it would have the ball go flying off with some hairlip sibling chasing after it. Or, if we were feeling particularly mean, we would take the ball off and just leave a cold, threaded stick.
Japan plays a large part in whether a system becomes successfull or not...
1. Nintendo has (for the most part) enjoyed good success in japan 2. The DS and DS lite are a legal drug in japan 3. The original Xbox did bad in japan, and one couldn't reasonably expect the 360 to do differently there 4. The 360 definately has an american "feel" to it, if you know what I mean. I don't mean it's cheap or anything, what I mean is by the way the console itself looks and controls, and by the way the interface looks and controls, and by the FEELING of the games...I dunno, it just seems more like a console that is aimed at american gamers moreso than anyone else. 5. Microsoft is an american company, and it's no secret that american culture is both loved and hated in japan. 6. Nintendo is japanese in it's origins...kinda like buying a book from a local mom-and-pop rather than amazon.
various other reasons as well...keep in mind these are only my opinions and from what I have seen...I've been gaming since the commodore 64 days, so I figure my opinion has to have at least SOME kind of value, right? Or not...whatever. Suffice it to say, these are my opinions and nothing more. Dissect them to your heart's content.
I've always been rather partial of the SNES controller. More specifically, the SN PRO PAD (the original was a little too small for my hands)
Still, the layout, the feel, everything...it was a FANTASTIC controller, and perfect for fighting games.
Also, the old NES arcade stick (it's name eludes me at the moment) was quite cool, with the big ol' red buttons and the knob that unscrewed
Sony LOSES money on each PS3 sold, whereas nintendo GAINES money on each Wii sold.
Yes, I know there are games and all that, but still...if it takes selling 2.5 Wii's to match the price of one PS3, and EACH Wii is making a profit while that one PS3 loses money...which one do you think provides a better profit margin?
Net income means jack shit. I don't care if you bring in 2 billion a year if your costs are 4 billion. If my costs are 50,000, and I bring in 75,000, guess what: I have a higher profit margin, which means I have MADE more money than you.
This will likely be modded offtopic, but whatever...the database is down at work and I'm bored.
What is the fascination with the Dual Shock? I mean, is it the analog aspect....what is it? It's an OK controller, but I would hardly call it the best ever. For it's time, ok fine...but still, the 360's controller is awesome, hell even the controller S was awesome...the dreamcast had a good controller too (I KNOW I am in the minority in thinking that, but whatever)
What made the dual shock so appealing to people though? I always found it to be a bit uncomfortable...
On the one hand, Gates can come off as being greedy, and often times not practicing what he preaches. He basically seems to care about being rich.

Nothing to base it on, just a hunch.
I don't know the answer to your question, but I can tell you this:
Thanks to the net, I can find copies of MANY of my long lost favourites:
Bitches of Westwood
A Clockwork Orgy
Sex Trek the Next Penetration (and the sequal, the Search for Sperm)
etc.
(I'm not kidding, it is really easy to find those hard-to-find titles now)
