I generally agree with much of what you post, Wyatt...but damn. Damn.

Pretty much. I dual-boot my gaming system, mainly because I don't want to screw around with WINE (and because the music production software I use doesn't play well with Linux), but for non-gaming and non-music-production use, I use Linux for EVERYTHING.

It mainly comes down to resource requirements, ease of use, configurable (is that even a word?), and security. If games had a bigger presence on Linux, that would leave only a single reason why I use Windows.

Maybe because if you have just a semi-successful career there, it looks awesome on a resume? I mean, let's face it...unless your office is run by an anti-Microsoft kind of person, the average company hiring IT folks (programming or otherwise) would likely be extremely impressed to see that on your resume, especially if you stayed there for multiple years and leave on your own rather than being fired.

One of the biggest lessons you can't learn in college: sometimes, a job is worth taking for no reason other than how it contributes to future opportunities. Ditto for taking classes post-college.

How do you figure? If people weren't so quick to get themselves piss drunk and then stumble their way home/get behind the wheel of a car, it wouldn't be a problem.

If you're gonna drink (or imbibe any other substance), stay home or go to a friend's place. It's safer, it's cheaper, and it's a helluva lot more fun.

It's all a matter of the situation you allow yourself to be in. I don't attend parties (LAN or otherwise) that are hosted by someone I don't know, I've never been into the club or bar scene, and during any "compromising" situation I'm in, I'm generally surrounded by people just as paranoid about it as I am.

I guess it all depends on your social circle and where you spend your leisure time, but it isn't as hard as people make it out to be.

As I said in a story on here yesterday, I don't post anything (including status updates or pictures) I wouldn't want my mother or local police department to know about. By default, I'd say that a well-designed bot in an RTS would have an advantage over all but the best players. Since there is so much to keep track of, software would win out over wetware.

Bots in an FPS are one thing, but when you have dozens of units, a build order, multiple fronts, resources, and more to track all at the same time, the infinitely scalable multitasking of a bot would certainly come in handy.

Back when I was working as a mechanic, we had a guy that came around and bought up all our scrap. He was doing pretty well for himself...likely earning as much if not more than we were working in the shop. He ended up disappearing for a couple of months...when he returned, he said that he had been almost caught ripping copper out of a construction site (something he did regularly, apparently...which explains his lavish lifestyle given his collecting scrap life.)

He said he could make more money in a single copper run than he could in nearly three weeks worth of scrap collecting. I don't think opportunities or a lower income gap are the problems...I think it's an activity that pays really well compared to the effort required, at least if our old scrap guy is any indication.
