Here's to hoping it works. This is one major clusterfuck, and a really unfortunate one at that. If this concrete dealy doesn't work, what other options do they have?
I completely agree, HTML5 is the way of the future...but you are ignoring the fact that although HTML5 is the way of the future, Flash is the way of today. Using your argument as a base, what harm would there be in supporting both HTML5 AND Flash on the same device?
Future proofing is awesome, but not if you lose access to current technology in the process.
It really wouldn't be that hard (from an interface standpoint) to modify/create flash games that are designed specifically for a touch interface.
Take a game series like Diablo, or Torchlight. Different gestures could be used as a shortcut for different things (such as switching weapon configs, hotkeys for different spells, etc), or you could just make the interface conducive to two-handing it (one hand for movement and fighting/magic, the other for interface manipulation)
Obviously, there are certain genres that just plain wouldn't work, but hack n slash, RPGs, tower defense games, strategy games...there are a lot of genres that would work quite well with an all-touch interface.
Not sure why you got modded down...games are a huge part of why Apple won't allow it. Places like Newgrounds, Kongregate, etc...they would be filled with games that worked on the iPad and iPhone, yet would be free...meaning Apple wouldn't get their cut.
They don't want you gardening outside of their walls, especially if the plants are "given" to you for nothing. They can claim security and stability (which are valid points), but it all comes down to money.
The best example of this was in Red Dwarf: Return to Earth. They zoomed in on a business card, then zoomed back out. Found a reflection behind the people in the picture, enhanced the reflection, then found a water droplet on a telephone pole, enhanced the reflection from that, and THEN they used a window seen in the reflection on the water droplet to see the back of the card. Then, they flipped the image...all so they could read the address on the back of the card.
Yeah, pretty much this. It's akin to the oil companies advertising the fact that you should use oil to heat your home...otherwise, you're wasting money!
But could he predict people associating "Blackberry" with "Phone that has a qwerty keyboard", the same way people associate "iPod" with "any MP3 player"?
There's also very little crime in a facist country run with an iron fist, and there is (in theory) no inequality within communisim...that doesn't make it a good idea.
...I can understand where Apple is coming from, as far as wanting to maintain the quality of the programs available to its users, but that is still a thinly veiled attempt at justifying keeping their devices locked down tighter than a million dollar whore.
For a company whose users have been stereotyped as hipsters, they really love to retain control over EVERYTHING they sell.
Why did Palm drop the ball? I mean, there was a moment when they had total market dominance, but instead of creating a new, better OS to cover their opportunity areas (like an actual filesystem for PalmOS, or a decent media player), they just rested in their laurels and allowed themselves to drop into obscurity...
You answered your own question...total market dominance = no competitors. That went on for long enough so that by the time they realized they did have competitors, they were already behind the curve:(
I had a PalmPilot M100 in high school...that thing was AWESOME. Super useful for keeping track of homework, keeping study session schedules...I also used it to take notes, since my handwriting was atrocious but the weird Palm recognition alphabet was so easy to do quickly.
I miss having a need for one...I always felt like such a cool fucker whipping that thing out.
Phantasy Star Online was pretty decent, and if you're into grindy MMOs then Final Fantasy XI was great...but yeah, other than that, a qualifier like "good" would have been appropriate:-)
I understand (and agree) that the guy should be punished for hacking this account, but how come nothing ever happend about Palin conducting official State business using her personal email account? Is it because the information was technically obtained illegaly? Or did something happen and I just missed it...?
no, every article you linked is dribble that is TLDR before I even glance at the article. It doesn't matter if they're well written beyond my understanding.
So don't click on them. No one is forcing you to.
also b: by article title alone, you are wrong. Consoles hardware and console businesses are not catching up to PC's, and never have and never will. Consoles start out 6 months ahead and end up 2 years behind. Console business is not pc business. They are diametrically opposed, as console gaming is drm while pc gaming is not.
My apologies, I used the wrong phrase. It's not that they are catching up, it's that the pc/console gap has been reduced significantly. Complex computations such as advanced AI and physics are now possible on consoles, not just PCs. That's one example of what I mean.
If PC gaming is dying, then what is steam? what is blizzard? what is activision? What is EA? What is CCP? What is Mythic (beyond being kinda shitty lately)? Do I need to keep listing major companies that are doing strongly?
All points that I address in the articles I linked to. One article focused on the things that have turned for the worse in PC gaming, one article focused on the things that have turned for the better, and one focused on the future.
"I like burritos, but they sure don't like me!" ::diarrhea::
"That was my squeezing arm. They took my squeezing arm! WHY MY SQUEEZING ARM! WHY!"
Sorry, the whole guacamole thing made me think of it, lol
Can anyone tell me why someone wouldn't want the .xxx domain to happen? What possible downside is there to it?
I'd go...

This argument fails because Apple makes barely any profit on the App market itself.
To paraphrase Dr. Seuss (and subsequently send him spinning in his grave), a profit is a profit no matter how small.

Chances are it's because the forums will be more easily moderated, whether it be because of forum software or other tools that are available.
Does TFA mention anything about which forum technology they will be using? Or are they going to write their own?
...anyone else surprised that porn isn't blocked as per the IT policy for the Senate? Or am I expecting too much?

It was fsking epic.

::begin displaying ignorance::
What advantage is there to restricting IE9 to only H.264? How can natively supporting more codecs be a bad thing?
...until I can get a decent (120GB+) sized SSD that doesn't cost as much as a new video card?

Lucky for me, I have the kind of woman who gets turned on by a multi-monitor setup :-)
Nerdy wives ftw
Last I checked every MMORPG runs on PC, with a few on MACs also, but I can't think of a single MMORPG that works on consoles.
The MMORPG genre is pretty damn big at this point. Since you blog this stuff, why do you think that MMORPG's have not moved to include consoles?
Uh...just to name a few:
Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast
EverQuest Online Adventures on PS2
Final Fantasy XI on PS2
Phantasy Star Universe on PS2 and 360
Age of Conan coming to 360
LOL, that's pretty much what my fiancee said :-)
