For what it's worth, Windows 7 (and many mainstay programs that have been updated since 7 was released, including Office, Firefox, etc.) are already very "finger-friendly" in design. Things like sliding to the edges of the screen to maximize a window or automatically resize it so it takes up half the screen, the "ribbon" in Office 2010, as well as the large icon-based main toolbar reminiscent of OSX are good examples.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix would also be very conducive for use with a touchscreen interface. The optimizations for netbook hardware would also match up well with the netbook-class hardware that seems to be appearing in forthcoming tablets.
Based ona number ofdifferent sources, the thing is hard to hold on to for any decent length of time. Nearly every review I have read makes mention of this, regardless of whether it heralds the iPad as the second coming of christ or as a piece of junk.
Just like supermodels with eating disorders, being too skinny can be a bad thing.
I don't base my decisions on the length of a feature list, but having some basics are required. You know, like a USB port. Or the ability to install whatever I want on it (and no, I don't mean in the open source sense, I mean in the non-app store sense.)
I'm not saying the iPad sucks...I'm just saying that I refuse to pay full price for something that isn't full featured.
"Half the functionality" isn't opinion, it's fact? I'm quite interested in learning more about the methodology you used to quantify this. Remember to show your work.
Limited multi-tasking. No card reader of any kind. No USB ports. Zero user servicable parts inside (i.e. can't replace internal storage, battery, etc.) Limited to applications in app store (unless you jailbreak it, but we aren't counting what it can do once it is hacked.)
All of these things are available on portable machines that cost as much and, in many cases, less than an iPad. I know you are paying for the form fact, but the fact that there is a keyboard accessory that the iPad docks to is HILARIOUS. If you own an iPad, and buy the keyboard dock...why didn't you just buy a netbook?
While we're at it, could you point me at the "fully functional" devices that cost the same as the ipad. No vaporware please!
Ever hear of a netbook, or a budget laptop? Or any of the literally dozens of tablets that are on their way?
Oh wait, you mean something that can be used in a tablet form factor and bought today. Here you go.
In fact, for less than the cost of the "top of the line" iPad, you could buy an Alienware m11x.
agree that tablets have been around long before the iPad, but none of them are like the iPad, and the iPad is innovative in its approach
If by "innovative in its approach" you mean charging the same as fully functional devices while only having half the functionality, you are correct. That isn't opinion, that is fact. Naturally, whether you think it is worth it or not is up to you.
That being said, I never thought I would see people ardently defending paying more for less, but people who love shiny things that do the same as stuff they already own have proven me wrong once again.
For the most part, mine do as well, except for this one friend of mine...for the sake of anonymity, let's just call him "Bill". "Bill" is a hulking, massive guy...6'2", 260 pounds, 25 years of age. Has a small gut on him, but for the most part "Bill" is built like an 18-wheeler with legs.
Three shots of whiskey, and he is wobbly. Four shots, and he can't stand. Five shots max, he passes out.
No joke. We would make fun of him for it if we weren't afraid of being snapped in half like a toothpick.
As a very good friend of mine likes to say, "Treat people as you would like to be treated...unless they betray you. Then you treat them however the fuck you want."
They included accidents wherein passengers had alcohol in their systems, even though the drivers were completely sober.
Seeing as you are discrediting this as a legit addition to the statistics, you have obviously never driven with a passenger who was whacked out of their gourd.
I would suggest getting one of the newer netbooks. Good battery life and easy to transport...not to mention a lot less money to lose if the thing gets stolen.
I would suggest either eBay or Craigslist. If you time it right, you MIGHT get lucky and find discounted models at Best Buy...they tend to lower prices on models shortly before the new ones come out (this applies to all electronics there)
In my opinion? Yes. They are very well built, there is no denying that...but the Apple logo demands quite a premium. When you consider that there isn't anything you can do on a Mac that can't be done on a PC, the price gap becomes more noticable.
If absolutely have to have OSX, I would recommend putting together a hackintosh. You get all the functionality of OSX but at a MUCH reduced price compared to Apple-branded hardware.
This is just my opinion, I don't speak for anyone else, etc.
There have been MANY studies, however, that link cannabis with reduced cancer risk, reduced risk of alzheimer's, decreasing effects of depression, assisting AIDS and chemo patients in maintaining an appetite...keep in mind that you can ingest cannabis without smoking it. You can cook with it or vaporize it, both of which remove the harm incurred on your lungs from smoking.
Unlike the positive effects from alcohol, the positive effects associated with cannabis don't disappear as consumption increases. Obviously, just like with any substance, you shouldn't overdo it...but the positive aspects aren't lost when the amount ingested increases.
I would provide links to cite my claims, but I'm at work and I don't think they would like seeing that stuff showing up in my browsing history:/ It's easy enough to find, look around at any study that isn't government funded...they are almost all positive.
Can we please get an affordable, 60GB one that is actually worth buying now? Last time I checked (two months ago), most of the less expensive drives were real spotty with their reliability.
Any suggestions for a decent 60GB SSD for under $120?
Heroin is pretty fucking toxic. We're not talking Marijuana toxic
1. Define "Marijuana toxic". Be sure to cite scientific articles to back up your statements.
I make my own alcohol.
I'd rather cigarettes and weed be gone too
2. You brew your own alcohol, a substance known to kill thousands of people a year both directly (alcohol poisoning) and indirectly (drunk drivers). Yet you want weed to disappear, a substance which has never had a recorded death directly attributed only to itself without any other factors coming into play?
Already did...left an extremely hot chick shortly after I got out of high school for a mostly average chick because the hot chick was about as useless as tits on a bull.
Because a pretty exterior is usually enough for most people...what's going on under the hood doesn't usually matter so long as the outside is pleasant to look at.
Inexplicably, for many guys, this applies to women as well...I'll personally take an average (or even ugly) highly intelligent woman over a dumb knockout any day.

Ars seemed to like them well enough.
...touche.
I keep getting older, they stay the sa- holy crap did she just kill a fifth of bourbon in one go?

I completely agree...I just think it's hilarious that a Herculean-size friend of mine drinks like a 100 pound high school chick :-)

Was there even a link? Is TFA just a summary?
Why is it always samzenfenfenpus who posts crap like this?

Very odd.
"Government" is an abstract idea, run by people. And who gives birth to those people? Us. Who elects those people? Us.
Government isn't the problem. The people who run it and the people who put them there are the problem.
Beng great is, if you think about it a form of failure. If you were not making something great, what was the point really?
Everyone can't come in first place...someone is going to come in second and third :-)
The track record of this community on what the greatest thing ever is and what will fail is not exactly stellar.
Being great and not failing are two very different things. It's in your best interest to remember that.
"When Hitler rose to power, a lot of people just stopped playing. And you know who those people were? The French. Are you French, Clyde?"
Already did...left an extremely hot chick shortly after I got out of high school for a mostly average chick because the hot chick was about as useless as tits on a bull.
Luckily, my fiancee is both sexy and smart :-)
