  1. More about tuning your processes on Performance Tuning Subversion · · Score: 3, Informative

Based on the headline, I was expecting some great method for tuning Subversion for increased performance. This article was about performance tuning your processing, not Subversion.

  2. It isn't just employers requiring these checks on How Far Should a Job Screening Go? · · Score: 1

In order to volunteer at my son's elementary school in Virginia I was required to submit fingerprints and consent to a background check by the local sheriff's department. I have heard people complain about these measures as being invasive but I think they are warranted. I know that I would not want someone with a serious criminal record being left alone with my son. My wife runs a pet sitting company and she requires her employees to submit fingerprints, consent to a criminal background check and a credit check. She would not, nor do I think she could, hire someone with a criminal history or poor credit because of insurance and bonding requirements. I do not blame a company hiring for sensitive positions for taking every precaution in the hiring process. While we may see it as invasive they are not performing these checks in order to 'do evil' later on. They are trying to prevent exactly that and you can just about bet that the people with access to your records have gone through the same checks. It is all about minimizing risk.

  3. As it should be on California Supreme Court OKs Web Libel Immunity · · Score: 1

Two wins in a a week for free speech, unbelievable. I have to commend the California Supreme Court and the US District Court in Chicago(Craigslist ruling) for getting it right in these two cases.

  4. Will consumers care? on Are New DRM Technologies Setting Vista Up For Failure? · · Score: 3, Insightful

As long as the DRM is not intrusive, will consumers really care? Most people don't care if Microsoft checks to make sure their music file or movie is legal before it plays as long as they don't see it. As soon as the DRM causes false positives, erodes performance or become otherwise intrusive, people will go nuts. If done right, DRM could be here to stay. The problem is, none of the players have a clue how to do it right.

  5. If Zune isn't compatible... on Zune Not Compatible With Windows Vista · · Score: 1

Anyone want to lay odds on whether iTunes works with Vista out of the gate? It is rather surprising that Microsoft's own device isn't compatible with Vista given the priority Microsoft gives to backwards compatibility. It probably works fine if you can get it to install. I am sure the installer is simply checking the OS version, not seeing Windows XP and saying sorry, your platform isn't supported.

  6. The work they are doing is amazing on Big Freakin' Laser Beams In Space · · Score: 2, Interesting

FTA: "The same electromechanical pistons that shape the adaptive-optics mirrors hold the whirling primary mirror's true shape (to a precision of twenty-one nanometers, three thousand times finer than a human hair) while small, fast-steering mirrors cancel out additional jitter." The accuracy they are able to obtain is amazing. Before you know it, they will be able to fire a small projectile from a satellite and eliminate a target as small as a human. In a few years, enemy leaders will not even be able to go outside without fear of a bullet falling from the heavens and crashing into their skull. Cool.

  7. Re:And this is a bad thing because? on Linux Users Banned From World of Warcraft? · · Score: 2, Funny

Please stop bad mouthing Blizzard. WoW GMs are infallible and beyond reproach. They do not make mistakes, these people were clearly cheating and using hacks, they had to be or Blizzard would not have banned them.
