Zune Not Compatible With Windows Vista

Disclaimer from the article:
Cool, Zune comes with it's own soft porn.
All seriousness aside, I think I'd already heard Zune wouldn't work with Vista immediately. Is that really a big show stopper? I'm guessing they've laid plans to have it ready to go by the time the OEMs are rolling out Vista-installed machines. An embarrassment perhaps, but Microsoft has many bigger and better gaffes to be proud of (say Clippy, and Microsoft Bob!).
Oh, and back to the soft porn, it must have been approved by the Ballmer himself, just look at the quote from his quoted Q&A session from Business Week in the article:
I think Steve's been spending a little too much time on-line.
Dollars to doughnuts that there will be an upgrade for the Zune software that makes it compatable. as soon as you can actually buy Vista.
Please. That might be because the OS is NOT OUT YET, and that it will be added as a supported OS when it is ?
Yes. Of course, Microsoft won't support Zune on his next OS. Thanks Slashdot. That wins the 'biggest troll story ever' award.
You can still use the Zune! You'll never want for DRM restrictions again!
Especially when Zune was developed by a team with very little connection with Microsoft's OS/Office side? Also, they've said they're going to have an app update for Vista users in time for its Jan 30 general release. This is a non-story.
Go somewhere random
what's this vista thing anyway?
Given that the Zune is also not compatible with Microsoft's own "PlaysForSure" music initiave, and its own Urge music store, could this be a trend?
Clearly this is a visionary tactic on behalf of Microsoft, and we can only assume that they have something better and wonderful planned that will blow everything else out of the water. A paradigm shift in musical entertainment, if you will.
The theory of relativity doesn't work right in Arkansas.
two bloated wastes of developers time are incompatible. stuff that matters?
Only the one woman is in distress and it's because she's been left out of the makeout session.
Why is the girl in the installer screen clearly in the middle of an orgasm? Seriously. W-T-F.
Vista isn't even being sold yet, why does it matter that it doesn't support it right now? Do you think the average Zune user has Vista installed?
... but Vista ist not yet released to retail and until then, it will support the Zune for sure...
Windows Vista is not supported at this time. Check back soon for updates.
You mean a piece of hardware isn't compatible with beta software?! This has never happened before, ever!
Are compatible with Linux (officially), so why is this even news? We all know that software will be available to work with Vista by Jan 30th, when the OS is publicly released (for sale).
wow braking (see what I did there) news, zune wont work with Vista. Seeing the OS isnt even out yet. Top notch reporting.
BG - OK guys, are we ready for the Zune launch? ...
Lackey - yes sir
BG - and we completed ALL of our testing?
Lackey - yes sir
BG - make it so

BG - WTF guys, you assured me we tested it!!
Lackey - we did, but we test against, you know, released systems people are using
BG -
Lackey - can we work it into Vista SP1?
BG - we'll have to, push back SP1 release to 4Q 2009
Rc 1 is not even close to the current version. Nice try guys.
Vista isn't even out yet. It stands to reason that MS wouldn't have gone so far as to sort their player out for an OS that isn't even released to businesses, let alone consumers, yet. Indeed, the page at Zune's website pretty much says that they're working on it.
But of course, that doesn't make as good a headline on Slashdot, and doesn't inspire the same sort of 99%-baseless M$ bashing bukkake sessions that we seem to witness on Slashdot every fucking night.
By summer it was all gone...now shesmovedon. --

So they don't "officially" support Vista. It isn't "officially" out yet. Big deal. They also aren't supporting anything other than XP SP2 and MCE 2005. ME, 2000, etc. are all left out.
What I want to know, is whether they plan to even attempt native Mac OS X support. At least Apple supports Windows with iTunes. After all the complaining about choice, DRM that goes too far, etc., MS is doing even worse.
But give them credit - the iPod was initially Mac-only, Firewire-only, and had no music store attached to it, and it started out fine. Sure, opening the flood gates with Windows + iTunes really propelled it, but this is the first edition.
Linux fans, there's an article about Blizzard banning WoW Linux users down a couple more on the front page. Don't even bother with this discussion.
If a Vista-compatible Zune software package isn't available on the day Vista is available to the general public, then you have a story. I don't blame Microsoft for declaring a time-bombed, semi-public beta of an operating system to be unsupported. Time spent on making Zune compatible with a handful of Vista RC1 installs is time not spent on a product that will ship to millions in 2 months.
This sig intentionally left blank.
zune totally pwns Vista!!!
By the time Vista is released, the only things compatible with it will be in museums.
As claimed by a blogger, you can in fact install the Zune software under Vista RC2. Here is a link to his blog, and the steps are included below to fend off karma whores and help save the guy a little bandwidth. Note, I do not have Vista RC2 or a Zune and have not tested this. Cheers.
.exe right click and go to properties
1. Don't let the Zune CD autorun - instead right click on it in my computer and choose open
2. On the Zune setup
3. Click on the compatibility tab, then check "run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows XP SP2
4. Hit apply, then ok and now go back to the opened Zune folder and run the Zunesetup.exe

However, Microsoft has also said that it will be compatible before Vista comes out for consumers. I don't see the big deal here.
My favorite quote from the article:

"I want to squirt you a picture of my kids. You want to squirt me back a video of your vacation. That's [an] experience," he said.
I'll bet it is. I think I'll pass though. I don't want Steve Balmer squirting things at me.
Honestly, what strange part of his brain thinks that even SOUNDS right?
Magic doesn't work in my presence. My power of disbelief is too strong.
Its ok that the Zune doesn't work with Vista, urge, or playforsure. I never liked those things anyway. Now if it was compatible with somethings I do like (iTunes), then I wouldn't completely dismiss it outright. But it doesn't, so I do.
It reminds me of Windows Activation. It actively denies me the ability to use my legal copy of XP. It's almost like a divine nudge that maybe I shouldn't be subjecting myself to it anyways. So I boot into Kubuntu.
I guess this person hasn't been following MSFT very long.

Anyone want to lay odds on whether iTunes works with Vista out of the gate? It is rather surprising that Microsoft's own device isn't compatible with Vista given the priority Microsoft gives to backwards compatibility. It probably works fine if you can get it to install. I am sure the installer is simply checking the OS version, not seeing Windows XP and saying sorry, your platform isn't supported.
I always wondered if that was the sound of Steve Balmer wanting to be someone else... You know the one. He's also called Steve.
If so, how has this been possible for a group even more 'outside' than the Zune group?
If not, it'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Apple's update.
Maybe Microsoft should ask the PC Guy to talk to Steve Jobs on their behalf about product marketing and strategy.
You've got it all wrong. You have to pay EXTRA for the software to work with Vista.
Sure, but how hard can it be? The OS is supposed to handle backwards apps compatibly, so that can't be the problem. Or are you telling me the Zune is not recognised as a storage device? Or might it be that the string comparison for OS in the Zune app does not let Vista pass through? So many ways to spin it.
But I agree, spin it is.
Damn.

This doesnt mean I *must* choose either Vista or the Zune. Becuase, quite frankly, I have no intention of using either one (or incidentally, anything else Microsoft)
What I think is funny is the discussion about the article on the article's site is not about Vista and the Zune, but whether Oriental or Asian is correct (or offensive) to describe the girls in the picture. :P

Am I the only one that finds Ballmer's quest to "squirt" me his kid...um...disturbing?
Reminds me of back in the late 90s when I was trying to use Microsoft Office products, I did use Word as far back as the late 80s. I kept having compatibility issues with other Microsoft products. I found third party software supported Microsoft formats better than Microsoft did. I finally got sick of it and dropped Microsoft products. Hard to believe a company of that size not supporting their own products. I've worked for large corporations and it generally comes down to departments not talking to each other. There tends to be a lot of internal competition inside the companies. Specifications are often treated as priviledged information even between different departments.
They're not supporting Mac OS 10.5 Leopard at this time either. Damn M$.

Just in general, it's a good idea to make something compatible with the products you plan to release in say the next quarter.
Especially when one of those products is The Flagship Product, which was supposed to be released... well... how many quarters ago?

That's some nice picture of some chick being traumatised from what seems to be the waist down. I hope that picture dosen't run through the whole install. A little disturbing!
Not sure this all that exciting. Vista wont be released to the general masses until Jan 2007. Microsoft estimates around 10% adoption rate, mostly from the sale of new computers. So most people wont be affected.
I read on digg about three seconds ago, that it in fact does work. Set the installer to XP compatibility mode, and BAM! It works!
Now, I'd love to see vista flop, but it looks like Zune won't be it's downfall. A simple patch can fix the installer.

This is my sig. There are many like it but this one is mine.
Because Microsoft's early adopter, Media-Center/Vista hungry customers should be the ones who are first in line to buy a Zune. Because Microsoft has had public and non-public beta versions of Vista out for a while now, and because other software and hardware manufacturers should have been the main targets of those betas, to make their products compatible a long time ago. Because Vista is the flagship product, which was supposed to be released years ago. Because although the department that made the Zune is a separate department from the Windows/Office departments, it exists specifically to boost the usefulness of Windows media formats, which in turn exist specifically to lock people into, I mean, to encourage people to use that flagship product. Because Vista is supposed to be the be-all end-all next-gen multimedia "the future is now" Operating System to work with everything.
Why in the world would Microsoft create a new product, and only enable it out of the box for yesterday's OS? According to Paul Thurrott's review of Vista RC1, iTunes works fine, no mention of iPods specifically, but I would imagine that all of the other mp3 players out there will work fine under Vista... otherwise the entire customer base will be pissed. Zune isn't so next-gen fancy that it needs any newfangled technology that other mp3 players can't use.
In short, this matters because all existing mp3 players should work with Vista. Why wouldn't Zune be able to? If the separate departments argument has any real bearing on the situation, then it's a sign that MS is too big for their britches.
You should see the apologists in the Windows Media community try to explain why this isn't so; I haven't seen such contortions since I saw Cirque du Soleil!
Given that the Zune is also not compatible with Microsoft's own "PlaysForSure" music initiave, and its own Urge music store, could this be a trend?
What, you mean like the new thing forcing you to buy everyting again? Like Office formats forcing a new Office that only runs worth a damn on the new OS which requires two to three times the computer you have now? Welcome to the M$ "entertainment" upgrade train. The only difference this time is that they are admitting things won't work before they launch both! So, you can call it a speeding up of events. Next, they will finally admit that their vapor ware is incompatible with other vapor ware. If the trend continues, they will come full circle and admit that none of their previous products were really compatible either. The next day they will roll out M$ Linux.
Friends don't help friends install M$ junk.
The "Developers, developers, developers, developers" part.
It may not be supported, and therefore, not guaranteed, because the OS is not released, but it should function anyway... the whole purpose of beta and RC releases is to have a period where hardware and software manufacturers can test to make sure that something does work. Software and hardware which should be able to work in the released OS should also function with the RC/beta releases. Unsupported means you can't call MS tech support to ask them to fix your problems, but beta means you can report bugs and incompatibilities so they get fixed before the release.
If the Zune department couldn't be bothered to make their "revolutionary" new product function with the "revolutionary", yet often delayed flagship OS, then that is pathetic.
Apple insider found a minor inconsistency in the Zune documentation and this is news? The Zune software installed fine my copy of Vista Beta 2. Can we please agree to get away from calling corporate mudslinging newsworthy? Its sinking really low to call a typo news worthy.

Yes. No mention of whether the iPod functions with iTunes under Vista, but iTunes itself seems to work.
Considering that Vista is not available for sale, and won't be until January, I fail to see how this is in any way newsworthy. The "fud" tag has been correctly applied to this story.
If a story came out downing Linux because some device isn't compatible with a future and unreleased version of the kernel, everyone would be crying "foul!" from the highest mountain. But since its Microsoft, its okay to have a double standard.
I want a new quote. One that won't spill. One that don't cost too much. Or come in a pill.
Sheesh. You pathetic open-source weenies are so determined to make MS look bad that you'll distort the facts. You say that it's not COMPATIBLE, but the document linked to clearly says SUPPORTED. I'm sure the software works just fine, but it's not officially supported. That's gonna change at the end of the month when Vista actually SHIPS.

The page was probably written before Vista was RTM, so I'm not terribly surprised by this.
Yeah yeah yeah, the Zune is a MS product, and Vista is also a MS product, but really, are you going to tout a product as compatible with a certain bit of software before the software is finalized? If you are the head of the Zune project, are you more concerned with XP compatibility (an OS that is already out there) or Vista compatibility (which is still not finalized yet)?
I bet that within a few weeks, the Zune will be compatible with Vista, now that it is RTM'd (is that a word, "RTM'd"?)

They're going to do one of two things: (1): charge for a program that lets Vista read the Zune or (2): Release an entirely different kind of Zune that works with Vista, and force everyone who bought the original to buy another one. This is Microsoft we're talking about.

I've only got two Win boxen in a lab full of Linux dual and quad-core machines, so it's far more important that Zune is Linux-compatible than it's WinVista compatible. Especially since we aren't "upgrading" to WinVista.

The Kai's Semi-Updated Website Thingy
It's restricted to Windows XP SP2, or Windows Media Center 2005 with Update Rollup 2 (Major Revion 5). The installer is doing a direct check and not a check for Major Rev 5 or later.
Vista is Major Rev 6, which is why it won't work unless you turn on XP Compatibilty mode, which reports the OS Revision as 5.

The only issue here is the Installer doing an OS Check, and it's checking specifically for OS Major Rev 5, (Minor Rev 2) not >= 5. That's it. Applying XP compatibility mode to the setup, simply reports OS Rev 5 to the Installer.

Sometime I wonder how these guys even made it to the top.
From the Zune.net website: Windows Vista is not supported at this time. Check back soon for updates.
Sure, not supporting an unreleased OS is kinda funny, but what would have been really funny is if they said, "Check back Zune..."
No sig for you! Come back one year!
A real software company about to release a major upgrade develops ALL new software on the as yet unreleased platform. This is the only way to write an OS/compiler/kernel. Everyone does it.
Vista absolutely has to be the best windows platform to develop windows software, but it isn't. This whole thing is a train wreck. I think this may be the end of the beginning of the end.
"The first thing the Zune installer does is check to see if there is updated Zune software available. It does this before it does the OS check, so the CD installer will work as soon as Vista-compatible software is released."
Sounds like somebody was in a hurry to get this into the shops.
I miss the 'life and times of a petulant cock-gobbler' piece that always followed twatter...

Ballmer squirts at kids?
Industry really is too deeply in bed with Congress.
Leben Sie jetzt die Fragen.
Microsoft doesn't care if they lose customers by not supporting Vista yet. They don't care if their sillyness is getting slashdotted for not supporting their OWN product. They're allowed to take their time with Zune, it's only first generation. Xbox 360 ended up dominating the market even with the bugs and glitches.
Microsoft is like a player with women. They don't need to follow the rules, or care about what other people think, or do what seems to be the most logical answer. They know they will always end up the winner.
That vision of Ballmer, with his little, bald, slightly-pointed head, looking like he was popping with joy while talking about his squirting content, I really didn't need.
That's the most hilarious thing I've heard today. Also, as a heads up, PS3s may not be compatible with Sony PS3 discs. And some GM cars now refuse to run on regular petrol.
It's no big deal that the Zune doesn't support Vista. Vista isn't out yet.
The big red flag here is that Vista doesn't support a Microsoft app that was written for XP. Oops.
The page says:
"Windows Vista
Windows Vista is not supported at this time. Check back soon for updates."
Oh my god! Could it be that when Vista is actually released in 2007, MS will add support for it?
Does Itunes support windows Vista? Or the next version of OSX for that matter?
Are you all just a bunch of fucking idiots?
Microsoft kills babies, while Apple saves the universe. This site has become nothing more than fanboi trash!

That comment was made of pure funny shite for real. But your point is clear and I think the *push* model behind media sharing on the Zune will fail for this and other reasons.
What are the usage scenarios for *squirting* content to another, besides the obvious practical jokes that you elude to? Is *squirting* content more or less intuitive and useful than content sharing ala iTunes and Airport Express (the model that iPods would clearly leverage if they were to attain WiFi connectivity).
I'm pretty sure that anyone who has used iTunes to broadcast to an AirportExpress or used iTunes to browse another iTunes library of someone else on the local network would attest to the general usefulness of the browse-and-pull or streaming broadcast models.
But squirting? Sending an entire media file (not streamed, presumably) to another user in a DRM wrapper that only lets them play it a couple of times? Pure ridiculousness.
Get a clue, Redmond...
