That's because if you drag a straight line from one side of the lake to another, it goes slightly below the surface because the Earth is round. In the middle of the lake its surface is farthest from that line so that's its highest point.

Meh, I expected an app that would tell you the age of a felled tree by counting the rings. I'd find that useful, being in the business.
