"Exactly. What people don't realize is that to provide a good experience for end users, putting Linux (any distro) on a computer entails more work for the manufacturer than just installing Windows and letting Microsoft sort out the hardware compatibility issues."
Except that MS doesn't sort those out. They'll sort out any conflicts from their OS and a serious piece of hardware, but they're not writing drivers and making sure everything WORKS. What Dell most likely did is a LOT of testing, researching, and maybe even reaching out to companies to have the necessary bits in place so that the Ubuntu laptop experience IS smooth.
But let's not put on MS's shoulders what isn't MS's to begin with.
Well disregarding any of the SEC's charges each of the 11 workers killed is worth approx $409,090,909. So Bill Gates could literally slaughter (at a networth of $66 Billion as of September 2012) about 1,774 people. He could just kill all of those people. That's the equivalent of 73 Hunger Games and hilariously the actual Hunger Games trilogy described 75 games. So we're off by 2 Hunger Games due to inflation.
Fantastic.
Okay, so you don't use:
The Police
Protection Derived from the Military
FDA approved drugs
USDA inspected products
the Justice System
the Internet (derived from government research)
anything invented (in part or in whole) by NASA?
Don't be so stupid.
People keep getting it wrong. Both are math heavy and all that jazz, but what differentiates the two is that Computer Science is about THEORY. It is learning, understanding, and developing new theoretical approaches to development. Engineering is the application of theories into reality.
Both have their uses, but for some reason Computer Science has been made into this "catch-all" degree that is interchangeable with Software Engineering. They're not interchangeable because the minds that have been properly taught those degrees should approach the same problem totally different.
As a Linux Dabbler / Windows Gamer it does seem kind of silly that the X crowd doesn't embrace:
A) The idea of change.
B) The idea of the change helping to make Linux more popular.
Why can't X support a module or a plugin or behavior switch along those lines that does what some people want AND still do what it has done all along? This could be added right into the config which then makes the choice at boot up.
You get your cake and eat it too...althought this Wayland project sounds interesting as well. I just keep wondering: why can't X just add this functionality ontop of its core functionality with ability to swap methods prior to it starting up the display, sort of like how I can choose to use GNOME or I can choose to use KDE prior to logging in?
"If that's what you want, it's already available at piratebay. (Or what the heck, even a legally obtained copy of Windows is "free" for most people.)"
Which goes totally against the "we can make Linux what we want" mentality that makes it great to begin with.
"Oh man, you mean you hate being required to learn how things work?"
Why do you say that (at least I took it as such) in a sarcastic way? If I'm being employed by COMPANY XYZ to make a product, they don't want and I don't want to spend 3 months trying to figure out all off the bullshit to get my job done. Software is one of those unique things that can be molded into a tool that is BOTH functional AND easy to use.
I've never quite understood why the FOSS crowd (and I do love FOSS so we're clear on that) INSISTS on making things stupidly complex. WYSIWYG and "Point-Click" Wizards are not bad things, even for those of us who CAN sit down and figure everything out. There are days that I look at a piece of FOSS and go "that is so cool", but if it'd take me 3-4 hours to set it up JUSt to get it working I might just be turned off on it.
FOSS should be more than just "you can customize it", it has the capacity to BE better than Commercial software from a non-technical standpoint. All too often I feel like developers forget the human element of your target audience.
What is Assand doing that is so revolutionary? A lot of stories I've been reading about these new cables suggest that they're a lot of personal opinions on the leaders of America's friends/enemies. So what? Is American leadership not allowed to form opinions and keep those opinions to theirselves?
Assand's "Freedom of Speech" crutch is bullshit at best. Firstly he's not an American citizen...he has NO right to claim these documents. It would be like me walking into his house and taking his computer because the internet should be free or something like that. He has no freedoms when it comes to America. He doesn't pay our taxes, doesn't follow our laws, and doesn't live in our country. Why does he have the right to steal from our leaders?
Personally he seems more like the current European fad of "Boo America" than some free speech revolutionary. If he was so much about free speech he'd be hitting China more often than America. At least us Americans CAN bitch about our government.
It's nowhere near the complexity of the Shuttle. It's great that they can launch a rocket cheaper than NASA can launch a shuttle...but you're comparing the cost of a garage of a Pinto to that of a Lamborghini.
But if MS released.NET on all platforms then they'd take the cake. I love Linux and have been using it for a little while now, my problem is that currently I can't just always write an app for one distro of even Linux and guarantee compatibility on other distros. With.NET it's easier just to say "I wrote it for.NET x.x which runs on any computer if you meet these requirements [and then you'd list em]." Not only would things have a well set of standard libraries, but it'd be able to support any language one wished (Perl.NET, Ruby.NET, C++ (already implemented).NET, etc).
And now I await the slanders of those who disagree:-)

Why not use fiber cables to connect the processors? It eliminates the problem with dust as well as the need for mirrors that take up system space.

Fuck forgot the link...here it is: http://www.monkey.org/~jose/tmp/GriefBomb1.jpg
To what appears to be a screenshot of the worm. Description seems to match... If the site goes down I'll put it up on an image sharing site.
