Games will run slower until Vista becomes more mature and the game companies learn all the ins and outs. When people went from 98 (lets forget about ME) to XP it was the same complaints that games ran slower. Then after awhile the issues where resolved and games ran better under Xp the 98.
When OS X came out people complained it was slow, had issues, etc. Now its a smooth OS. Why people assume a new OS will not have issues is beyond me.
I'm not sure about the audio stack, but the audio imporvement I want to see is application level sound control.
my fiance (science whiz...phd) loves the 3d flip. she did not like expose on the mac. She liked how the flip 3d was more organized, could keep her eye in one spot and quickly flip through the windows vs. looking all over the screen. YMMV.
I think the bottom line is no matter what GUI design you come up with people will love it, hate it and not care. And there will always be people who complain it should have done xyz....
or what people are really saying is hey it works and it doesnt cost me a dime so why upgrade? The exact same reason people wont go to Macs or Linux or any other OS. If you have something nad it works most people aren't going to replace it.
So what your saying is you are happy with state A and don't want to go to state B? So don't. I mean it doesn't get any simpler that that.
So what does Operating X do for me? How does it make me more productive? This same question will be asked when the new Apple Os is, when a new Linux distro comes out, etc. Not everyone will need/want to u[grade. But for those that do there is another option.
Well new laptop for my fiance comes with Vista home prof. (or premium, whatever) if she hates it then on goes XP. she played around with Vista and liked the look and the scroll through all the open windows feature.
Now to be fair the software she uses is Adobe Cs, End note, firefox (she loves that btw), office, itunes and thats about it. so I am not too concerned about software issues creeping up. The only thing which needs to run is Adobe Cs, if it doesnt then back to XP. That's the deal breaker.
Vendors are being dicks about vista. Fiance needed a new laptop, got a fully loaded insperion 1505 (she really likes them). Does dell include an Os cd? no, a "restore" cd that has all the dell shit in it that will be reinstalled. Can you get a true Os from dell? no.
Dont worry I am going somewhere with this:-). I ask the dell rep well if I hate vista and install xp do I void my warranty? Answer: sorta. Dell will not provide and support for the laptop unless it has the original Os. You know it makes some sense so they dont support an unknown system. But come on Xp sp2?
so i ask dell ok I want this machine with Xp installed. sorry you can only get it with vista. Good thing I have access to vista ultimate for free.;-)
"Laws are made to protect profits of those who create them. Laws are made to destroy competition. "
So a law which says rape is bad is protecting profits and destroying competition? How about laws protecting children from molestation?
Look I know they are some bad laws, but they are also good laws. A lot of people will break laws to protest something (say WTO for en example) and go to jail for it. THey believe that their actions and putting themselves at real risk and accepting the consequences will help change the world. I can respect that easily. On the other hand you have people downloading "luxury items" but refusing to actually put themselves in real risk (like protesters) or accepting the consequences and saying I broke a "bad" law and shouldn't be punished at all.
Look you hate the RIAA? Great go out and protest like those for/against the war. But it seems to me most people just want stuff for free and damn anything else.
It's called charging what the market will bear. This goes across all industries. In the US for example gas, electricty, cable, etc. all cost different things even from one town to the next.
"RIAA doesn't do this to profit from the lawsuits, but to stop people from using P2P"
The RIAA does not want to stop P2P, it wants to stop their music from being given away for free over P2P. However, right now, it seems the only way to stop it is to shut them down which is different. For example if all music illegally on P2P went away do you think the RIAA would care anymore? No.
What shocks me is that a crime is committed and people on here will justify it till the cows come home. Doesn't matter if you dont like the laws you still need to follow them. You can work on changing them but I don't think we want groups of people deciding what laws they will or will not follow for any given day.
"
With all the genuine evil, cruelty and nastiness that goes on on this planet, why does anyone give half a rat's ass about copying files, legally or otherwise? "
The same reason we give a half rat's ass about speeding drunk driving, white collar crimes (e.g. Enron), theft, etc? Just because there is something worse out there doesn't mean we stop going after other things. The RIAA is in a particular market place so it focuses on crimes in that area. I don't expect an HMO to pick up the torch for RIAA issues and vice versa.
If we only drew the line at "evil" things (and that alone could be a topic: what is evil?) then a lot of bad things would go on in society.
"this is called prejudice.. can we say prejudice? "
Sorry I disagree with you. If you are doing something besides driving it has been proven without a doubt your chances of causing an accident double. Doesn't matter if its texting, reading, knitting, etc. If I see you next to me doing any of those things then I know the chances of you causing an accident are much higher. I also know what you are doing is not important and what you are doing is putting others lives at risk. Putting other lives at risk by being reckless is a crime.
Your mom may be the best driver in the world, however they are millions of others who suck and will say if she can do it so can we. My life is more valuable then your text message any day.
Amen! People are so selfish they think their text is more important then increasing the likely hood of getting in an accident and hurting or killing other people.
Hell no. It's my right to do whatever I want in a car no matter how much danger it puts others in. If I want to text with one hand, eat a hot greasy sub in the other while getting a BJ from a hooker I picked up thats MY right. I am the best driver in the world and nothing effects me! In fact I will even drive with both eyes closed and don't you dare tell me I can't
It amazes me at the selfishness of people. Why do they think they are so important they need to do all this stuff driving? Why do they think its ok to increase their chances drastically of getting into an accident and possibly killing and injuring others?
If you are so important you need to be on your cell when driving then I think you are important neough to have a chauffuer.
"I can drive perfectly well while using a phone or eating"
I'm sure you don't not 100% of the time. If I get hit by someone eating or on a phone I plan on showing the person a new interface for their phone/food:-)
Yes its fun cause you can play and stop and let others jump in at the arcade right?
Lets talk about it has exercise. You need 30 mins of non stop exercise to get the proper workout. Assuming you have a friend then yes you two could do it together. What if you had a 3rd? SOL because you will have to wait 30 mins if doing it right.
Now how much fun will it be if you cant stop for 30 mins?
"Maybe it is? Either way, you probably shouldn't tell other people how to live their lives.:)".
Used to think that until i worked at an HOM. Most expensive problem in this country relating to healthcare...obesity and all its side effects. The top 5..all lifestyle choices (obesity, smoking, alcoholism, etc). So if my rates are going up cause of that you bet I am going to say something:-)
All depends on how you push yourself. On weekends I bike 30 miles or so with a large group and our routes are very hilly. Great leg and cardio workout. Sometimes htough we do a lot of flat biking (60 miles) just to burn fat and dont work on the cardio as much.
And it is social, even as serious as we are we will still talk about sports, technology, tv, etc (excluding the kills or we would die).
"I don't get your opposition to using video games as an exercise tool. It seems to be more emotional than rational. Are you suggesting that there's somehow less value because you are exercising in a private place using technology?".
Yes. A person is more likely to stick with any exercise where there is social interaction. Gym is a great example. New people who start and go by themselves are very likely to stop going. Something like 75% of people who join after New years stop going after a few weeks. However when you look at people who join the gym and go with friends they are much more likely to stay because A) they have friends going b) they have a workout partner c) and have someone to kick their ass. Look at a lot of those cardio callses and you will see a lot of people talking before and after, thats what gets people going back. Lifting is much more fun and you get more out of it with a partner or two (spotting, people can push you, etc). I could go on but you get my point. Oh want to learn about your body, eating, proper warm up, etc. gym will teach you for free, want to learn even more, take martial arts you can learn a lot about treating injury.
Now lets compare this to DDR. What's motivating them? Do they have the support network? How are they learning about nutrition, stretching, etc. Technology is not the answer to the exercise issue. Technology is not the answer to everything. I am not against technology I have BS and MS in the computer field, and being in that field I see how out of shape it is, the excuses, and what works and doesn't work.
The social interaction part, the ability to get skills that will apply to something to the real world, learning a lot about your body, is what will help people in the long run. I think DDR will be a quick fix fad that will do no one any good.
And I just don't preach i do. Form 15 years of martial arts of all styles, soccer, track, lifting (I bench 275), racquetball, power walking with my fiance, biking, etc. And yet I am still an IT geek. I'm not saying everyone has to be nuts like me, but I seriously wonder about people who complain even about 30 mins of power walking.
Then i would say the person may have some mental issues. I am being serious and not trolling. so every sport they hate (walking, biking, lifting, martial arts, swimming, running, etc, etc.) but the only one they love happens to be a video game? sorry i dont buy it at all.
Do something which requires social interaction, learning useful skills and knowledge about their body, etc. O
Also you hope what they choose to do can also teach them the fundamentals of exercise...DDR can not do this.
usually when someone tells me they have tried everything and didnt like it, I can name 5 things they haven't tried.
Come on you couldn't read between the lines of my poorly formed and not clear sentence? :-)
I meant to say: I am looking forward to using Vista's application level sound control feature.
In your opinion....what do people state subjective things as facts?
Games will run slower until Vista becomes more mature and the game companies learn all the ins and outs. When people went from 98 (lets forget about ME) to XP it was the same complaints that games ran slower. Then after awhile the issues where resolved and games ran better under Xp the 98.

maybe they will enhance it in the future?
my fiance (science whiz...phd) loves the 3d flip. she did not like expose on the mac. She liked how the flip 3d was more organized, could keep her eye in one spot and quickly flip through the windows vs. looking all over the screen. YMMV.

maybe he wanted to use his machine to play games and work and not bother with tech support?
not everyone buys a computer so they can trouble shoot, experiment, etc.

Ya Vietnam and RIAA so similar...maybe we can throw Rosa Parks in there too....
