because BSD protects the users and maybe users are more important? Just maybe.
That old thought experiment of what happens to linux if Linus is no longer around comes to mind. Linux will still be developed but it would be less free to users.
I don't 'prefer' closed source drivers. I prefer a system that works better than Windows and that's why I would switch. If that means an open sourced OS with closed source drivers then so be it.
you make it sound like OSS is a person or a company. No, it's about freedom and with that comes responsibility. It's not magic. but if you really want something to happen, you can and nobody will stop you. With OSS...why 500 years from now it will be possible to run firefox and linux from some quantum super nano computer. but not Win 98!
that's what you get with closed source operating systems. If Windows 98 was open source, someone would be able to update it so that Firefox can progress
The Windows world needs an open source alternative to microsoft. It will make it easier for windows users to switch to open source systems. But a better mac open office, with special mac only features, wouldn't do that. There's no point in getting people to consider switching to mac instead of an open source OS
At first I was going to say "I agree! Pop music really is pure garbage and what we need is a Mozart or Bach for this generation...." Then I read the second line.
it is *my* browser and I can do anything I want with it and I don't have to give it all away. That's why it is under the MPL. But it's also under GPL if you want to share. Isn't choice good?
yes, it's about giving them access to information and ideas that can't be controlled by their government that will lead to that ground up education that you are talking about!
Microsoft dropped IE for the mac because they couldn't compete with mac alternatives such as Safari, Firefox and Camino. They may drop Office for the mac if Open/NeoOffice does a better job.
let's see what happens when you try to open those documents 10 years from now and Microsoft doesn't support the old format anymore because they want you to switch to a new version. See? That's what we have to fight against.
for every company that failed next to Microsoft, there was always an element of unfairness with Microsoft's marketshare advantage. But it's also because the company screwed up. For example, PalmOS also had the majority of the PDA market but failed to keep up with a modern OS, split itself into 2 companies and other stupid things.
sitting and stagnating is one way of leveraging a monopoly. why spend resources improving the product if everyone will use it anyway? Also, Netscape did come up with quite a few non standard tags.
Once upon a time there was a company called Netscape. It had 90% of the browser market. Google has to remember that there is no reason why they must be #1 in a few years just like Netscape. Leverage your monopoly too much and you're gone!
Open office does a pretty good job. It's just that we have to be careful when we see a review that compares OOo and Office based on number of features. That leads to a trap.
One thing I would like to see is a multi-clipboard. Actually I'm hoping to see it in Firefox...flock has a similar concept.
I've tried Opera and your admitted experience with it doesn't contradict mine. (I have Opera 9 and keep up with the latest versions) But, with Adblock+ on Firefox I don't have to select and click on anything to block most ads. Also one can get Adblock Filterset.G Updater to keep up with the latest ads but Adblock+ does a pretty good job out of the box.
I'm not "obviously" a fanboy. I admit when Opera is faster with less memory or has better css support. But when it comes to adblock, Firefox wins and it makes a big difference in how I browse the web.
Also if you want speed and features you can try Orca.
It has better adblocking than Opera but still not as good as Firefox. But if you want lots of features and speed and not the IE engine then Orca is a good alternative.
IE certainly does matter if there are still many websites that require IE. We can't live in an Firefox/Opera/Konq/Safari fantasy web where everything works for everyone. To fight the IE dominance we need marketshare and Firefox is the only browser that is making a real difference. I can see why Opera isn't doing what it takes to get out of the IE web and they will stay at 1% until they can figure it out. Hint: it's not about the features but the implementation.
it's not automatic so you still see the ads for each website. With Adblock+, everything is taken care of. What's the point of blocking ads *after* already being bombarded with it?
I only have the adblock+ extension installed.

Windows 98 is not hardware. Firefox will run on that 98 machine if there's linux or some other OSS operating system

adblock+ doesn't need filterset.g
See http://adblockplus.org/ and http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project#filterset.g

sounds like North Korea will save the world! oh wait...that will totally suck. I prefer freedom.

right, the standard should be startup to a functional graphical desktop. So for linux that would include loading X and KDE/Gnome
No, there is no setting to change it back to "Classic" Well, this will help all those Office certification training courses.

Also, i've replaced the filter in adblock+ to this

you mean feature parity ("we can do 5 billion kinds of tables!") as opposed to being as easy to use or having good performance.
how will that help its security?
