  18. amazing on Is Microsoft An Innovator? - The Winer-Scoble Debate · · Score: 1

Microsoft has millions and millions of dollars and all they have to show for that are little things? Even I will make a better case for Microsoft. What they have done is *unified* the computer experience with an *extremely diverse* range of hardware configurations allowing much choice without looking like a total mess. This is something linux and Apple cannot claim to do. Because of Microsoft, I can get a computer for a low price and it will just work. Maybe not as cheap as linux. Maybe not as polished as Apple. But for most people it does the job. And the ubiquity in the OS market is good for developers who just want to write once and run optimally (unlike java) nevertheless, i will root for Apple since they moved to intel. I hope linux can get their act together on the usability. Microsoft needs competition. But right now they have what the market needs.

  19. some points to think about on Companies 'Blah' About Vista · · Score: 1

    1) everyone "had" to upgrade everything in the late 90's because of Y2K 2) the big deal about XP was hardware compatibility of 98 with the 32 bit stability of Windows 2000. Since we all have those things, there is little reason to get a new OS. 3) This also means it will be much harder to convince people to switch to linux. There's a major retraining cost between different versions of Windows and Office...what about replacing everything for linux and its apps? It just boggles my mind...the only way it could happen is if linux gets its act together by standardizing on 1 distro and 1 GUI *and* if Microsoft does something really stupid like not supporting W2K and XP

I think the key phrase is "most people." Apple really knows how to go after "most people." Someone like me....well I'm more interested in a PDA that can do more than just movies and audio. And I want it to be a phone and connect to the internet. Now if there is anyone that dropped the ball, it's Palm. They had everyone sold on the PDA idea and then couldn't keep up with the times.
