As others have suggested, a live CD/USB distro could be used as an alternative OS if the OP needs more, assuming the laptop can boot from either. He could even boot from a portable hard drive.
If they're going to the extents that they are to lock down and secure their network/devices, surely they won't allow booting from a CD or any external device... they'd be crazy. The BIOS is likely locked to boot only from an internal drive, and it's probable that tamper detection is in hardware. Not worth the risk...
If the gas prices continue to rise the housing values in the urban areas will start dropping and the values in the cities will rise due to demand. Who knows how long it'll take though.
They still benefit from herd immunity as long as the herd actually has it.
To a point - an egg allergy is reasonably common. So if this group can't get a vaccination and someone still manages to contract it, it will still spread among the non-vaccinated group. It is even possible that you can be a carrier and not actually be affected by some strains.
Unless there are vaccines that everyone can take we'll never be truly free of that kind of disease.
Well, that only goes so far. When you have parents refusing to vaccinate their children then all the childhood diseases that were deadly will start to come back again through carriers. I can't understand why parents would refuse this. If you told someone that lived through one of those outbreaks that cost hundreds (thousands?) of lives that there was a preventative measure that was rejected, they'd think you were off your rocker.
Case in point: a few years ago a Christian group told parents to withhold the mumps vaccine. Guess what happened? Yep, there was an outbreak. Holy shit! Who would've thought that would happen?!
You can't help stupid people. You really can't. That particular example wasn't life threatening, but it could have implications later in life such as sterility (probably a good thing they can't pass those genes on.)
It's rather amusing that the teachers aren't more educated on this topic.
There's so many things emitting RF. They're probably like a couple people where I work - they seem to think that if a device isn't on there aren't any radio signals about. I've tried to explain that even if your radio/cell/whatever is off the signals are still in the air and passing through their body. I don't understand why people can't grasp that simple concept...
Slash the price to $200 and even the most rabid Apple fan will knock at Apple's door with torches and pitchforks if they bought a full price iPad 2 one month earlier.
The most rabid fan would know the iPad3 is coming and wait before making a decision to purchase...
Seriously, this summary sounds like there is really no way around this BS except by using a dumbphone and never connecting anything to the Internet.
Well, if you're the only one who has physical access to the phone, getting a dumb phone that can't connect to the internet is the best way to avoid getting hacked... although most of the "hacking" is through social engineering.
As smart phones get more and more prevalent this will get worse. Apple's app store tries to remove the social engineering factor, but it's still plausible to hack the phone through the cell networks, and attack the device directly. If that happens to the iPhone ecosystem all hell will break loose.
Believe it or not, after using multiple sessions on different hosts for an extended period of time the promps meld together and you don't see them anymore. It doesn't help that they all look more or less the same. The background is far more noticeable.
Hey, I actually like that idea. I can have ssh sessions open for up to five different machines... I'd definitely find it useful to attach different backgrounds to each one so I immediately know which machine I'm currently using. It would prevent me from entering commands in the wrong session, which I've done multiple times before with somewhat disastrous results...
Considering the past history of ludicrously high damage claims and the huge amount of infringing content they probably actually have, I figured they'd be making up new words to describe the number they came up with...
Yes, but this is an actual company they brought down, not an individual; they have arrested the owners of said company. Otherwise it would have been 80 trillion dollars.
Future Shop specifically will allow returns up to fourteen days after purchase. It doesn not say anything about rejecting a return that's opened.
However, it sounds like the [thieves?] just re-shrinkwrapped it and returned it, so they didn't open it to check.
This news is disturbing, I just bought eight of them for work (although not at one of the listed stores), tomorrow morning first thing I'm going to open them all to make sure they're legit!

You're still comparing driving a car 2000 miles vs a car that drove 30,000.
It'd be a better comparison if you drove both cars 30k miles.

That must've been one hell of a big printer.
Sheldon certainly would be happy enough to buy a BD player to watch it.
Not pointless for those who make/manufacture the tests. Basically guaranteed income.
Microsoft is just very upset that they didn't think of it first.
Just like most of their other projects, except Google won't sell to them.

Oh great, that means the speakers in the TV are going to be shittier than they are now?
I remember my old projection TV from 1999. It had excellent sound. My TV from 1.5 years ago it's rather unpleasant listening to the built in speakers.
Not everyone wants to have a full amplifier and speaker setup next to every TV.
Yes, but AVG also shipped a x32 binary in a x64 release, causing computers to crash.
Otherwise their antivirus was better than what we were using, and was a better price.
Dropped them like a hot rock after that happened... it appears they can't even do basic QC.

Why is it all these companies are based in Texas? Lax patent laws or something?
Why yes, yes I do. Head gasket repairs are common.
Now, if you had gremlins change/rotate your tires, that I wouldn't trust.
Probably CarrierIQ. Apple has admitted it's there, but not enabled by default.
CarrierIQ is on a lot of phones, including Android phones, so this point is moot anyway...

I can see this being used as a central point of attack to gain access to the phone. If anything happens to that you can't trust your phone anymore.

For me, I initially hated 4.x. However, I did grow to like some things about it.
I actually had to use 3.x last week on one of my old machines I'd forgotten to update, and everything just felt so damn backwards.
Back then linux was on floppy disks.
