You could probably hold an entire debate about that belief. I am not certain that is true in all cultures or even true in general. Seems to me a lot of the more permissive sexual cultures don't have kids that are damaged by the sexual images in their society.
I think you missed part of my point, which is that what a person can handle is based on that person. There are 30 year olds "kids" out there that can't handle GTA, but I'm sure that there are 8 year olds that can. There is nothing magic about the number, though my personal feeling (not a parent mind you) that a 12 year old kid should have a concept of art, that depiction of something doesn't equal promotion of something, and they can rollplay as a bad person without being a bad person themselves.
Kids aren't commodities. They are people (this is why the "fully formed person" and the hatred of teenagers get on my craw... they aren't non-humans) and each one is different. This article made some pretty sweeping statements about what is right and wrong for ANY person.

But if your kid doesn't understand the difference between fantasy and reality at 10 or 11 or 12 then there is a parenting problem or other general mental illness. They aren't just lumps of clay that get reasoning ability by magic on their 18th birth day. It's amazing how most of the population forgets what being aged 10-18 is like later in life... this is something they should know already.

My parents have owned a searchlight rental business for 30 years now. For the first Batman movie they were asked to put a bat signal cutout on the searchlight to simulate the bat signal. The thing is that searchlights have too high a candlepower and the light just bends around the cutout. The light spreads more the farther away from the searchlight. It looks cool when shown against a wall, but far out in the sky it simply doesn't work. The physics of light doesn't allow it.
The thing is that every post on every site you see about "Obamacare" is an accusation with no facts to back it up, just like the post you replied to.
Fox News did two identical polls recently, the only difference being the term for the program "Affordable Care Act" or "Obamacare" was used. When there was a significantly higher percentage of people that liked the act when it's called the ACA than when it is called Obamacare.
The debate against Obamacare has been the most fact free debate that the U.S. has seen in years. It's a screen for every projection of every annoyance we have about healthcare in the U.S. The people that are preaching against it the loudest have no idea what it really is and they show it daily.
People do not single source their information, which is absolutely true, but that misses the point. The point is that corporate information yells though a stack of a million amp PA speakers as compared to personal speech which is the equivalent of a whisper. If you say money is equal to speech you have to admit that some people get way more speech than others. Getting rid of net neutrality makes the problem 10 times worse because then you *can't* set up your own server and expect it to reach everyone. Setting up a linux server to serve yourself is not equal to a server room with 1000 servers... that's just a false equivalency.

That's a parent's prerogative. There isn't anyone better than the parent to decide what his/her kid can handle. It's individual to that child.
